Prevalence And Severity Of Viral Hepatitis In Pakistani Pregnant Women: A Five Year Hospital Based Study, A B. Aziz, S Hamid, S Iqbal, W Islam, S A. Karim
Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology
A hospital based observational study was carried out on pregnant women presenting with either acute hepatitis or fulminant hepatic failure (FHF), during the past years. Of 53 patients, 20 (38%) developed FHF.Non-A, Non-B was the commonest cause (62%) followed by hepatitis B in 17% and hepatitis A in 4% cases. Eight women expired (case fatality rate 15%) with a high maternal mortality (62%) caused by NANB hepatitis. Perinatal mortality was 30%. Poor prognostic factors identified were lack of antenatal care, severity of jaundice, history of somnolence, gastrointestinal bleeding and a high grade of encephalopathy.

Programming Parameters For 5-To-8-Year-Old Children In 4-H, Scott D. Scheer
Programming Parameters For 5-To-8-Year-Old Children In 4-H, Scott D. Scheer
Journal of Extension
Many states today have 4-H programming for 5-to-8-year-olds, often called "Cloverbuds," "Cloverkids," or "4-H Prep." The need to develop clear, research-based information for use with Ohio's "Cloverbud" program led to the development of 10 fundamental parameters based upon preadolescents' needs as well as educational design research. The purpose of these parameters is to help 4-H Extension professionals make decisions regarding programming. They are consistent with the "K-3 Youth in 4-H: Guidelines for Programming" (National 5-8 Curriculum Task Force, 1991) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children's position statement on developmentally appropriate practice in the primary grades, serving …

In the last 200 years, cultivation, grazing, and other activities initiated by humans have destroyed more than 80 percent of the strips of vegetation along North American and European streams and other bodies of water (Decamps and Naiman 1989; Petts et al. 1989). This disappearance of the riparian zones is continuing with little concern for ecological consequences. At the same time, riparian buffer strips are being promoted as a preferred management practice in the United States, especially in the Great Plains, to protect water resources from soil and chemical pollution (Schoeneberger 1994; Schoeneberger et al. 1995; Schultz et al. 1995a; …
Relationship Between Selected Demographic Variables And Self-Esteem In Female Adolescents In The Rural South, Denise Tennison
Relationship Between Selected Demographic Variables And Self-Esteem In Female Adolescents In The Rural South, Denise Tennison
MSN Research Projects
Self-esteem is recognized as a basic personality- characteristic of positive and productive behavior. The view the adolescent female has of herself is of utmost importance and may have an impact on behavior, achievement, social functioning, and physical and emotional health. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a relationship between sociodemographic variables and self-esteem in adolescent females. Roy's Adaptation Model was used to guide this descriptive correlation investigation. Data were collected from a sample of 3 0 adolescent females from a small rural high school in East Central Mississippi. Participants were surveyed using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem …

Incidence Of Documented Exercise Prescription In Nurse Practitioner Client With A Diagnosis Of Cardiovascular Disease, Shannon Phillips
MSN Research Projects
The purpose of this ex post facto descriptive study was to determine the incidence of documented exercise prescription in nurse practitioner clients with a diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. Pender's Health Promotion Model provided the theoretical framework for this study. Nurse practitioners providing primary care in the State of Mississippi was the target population, with four nurse practitioners providing care in clinics representing the four geographical regions of Mississippi (Northeast, Southwest, Southeast, and Northwest) selected as a nonrandom sample of convenience. At each clinic, from the total population of records in which clients were aged 25 to 65 years with a …

Alternative Health Care Practices Of Patients Who Attend Nurse Practitioner Clinics In North Mississippi, Wesley Barrett
MSN Research Projects
As many as one out of three Americans uses alternative health therapies. The purpose of this study was to describe the type and frequency of alternative health care practices and sociodemographics of patients in nurse practitioner clinics in North Mississippi in order to determine implications for nurse practitioners. Leininger's Theory of Cultural Care Diversity and Universality served as the conceptual framework for this study. The researcher, using a descriptive study design, sought to answer the following questions: 1) What are the characteristics of patients who use alternative health care practices? 2) What types of alternative health care practices are being …

The Role Of (Alpha)S1-Casein In The Formation Of The Casein Micelle, Chinchi Chen
The Role Of (Alpha)S1-Casein In The Formation Of The Casein Micelle, Chinchi Chen
Theses
Caseins are the major protein components of milk. Bovine caseins have been the most thoroughly studied and serve as the principal area of research for the dairy industry. Bovine caseins are composed of several major polypeptide families, (alpha)s1-, (alpha)s1-, (beta)- and K-caseins. The (alpha)s1-caseins constitute 30.6% of bovine milk protein. The distribution of polar and apolar amino acids within each (alpha)s1 -casein molecule tends to be asymmetric, yielding protein molecules with hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains that give the caseins excellent functional properties. Moreover, the phosphoserine groups of (alpha)s1 -casein associate with calcium phosphate complexes in milk to form loosely ordered …
Age, Status And Gender: Mortality Patterns And Mortuary Practice At Umm El-Jimal, Jordan, Melissa Cheyney
Age, Status And Gender: Mortality Patterns And Mortuary Practice At Umm El-Jimal, Jordan, Melissa Cheyney
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study is to identify trends in both burial practice and mortality patterning at the Late Antique site of Umm el-Jimal in northern Jordan, through a combined emphasis on mortuary contexts and human skeletal evidence. Data were analyzed and interpreted in three main areas involving: ( 1) the demographic evaluation of biological profiles comprised of sex, age and pathology estimations; (2) life table calculations for crude mortality rates, life expectancies, probability of death and number of individuals dying in time-successive age intervals; and (3) sex-, age- and status-specific patterns in demography and burial structure. These evaluations were …
Interpreting Diet By Age, Status, And Gender And Establishing Weaning Patterns Using Trace Element Analysis On Human Remains From Umm El-Jimal, Jordan, Monica Shah
Masters Theses
The intent of this study is to learn about the dietary patterns of early fourth century occupants of a Late Antique site in northern Jordan. Bone samples of 107 individuals from two distinct cemetery· types, assumed to be status differentiated, were chemically examined for their trace element composition. Trace element analysis can potentially investigate groups of individuals to attempt to determine if gender, age, or status influenced access to food resources.
Statistical tests found that significant differences of trace element concentrations were evident in an inter-burial area study for all adults and subadults, and when examining intra-burial area males and …
Magical Results Of Eating And Drinking In Medieval Narrative, Deborah A. Oosterhouse
Magical Results Of Eating And Drinking In Medieval Narrative, Deborah A. Oosterhouse

One of the most famous stories in Norse literature is the tale of Sigurd, who kills the dragon Fafnir. While roasting the heart of the dragon so that his companion, Regin, may eat it, Sigurd ingests some of the blood that bums his thumb and immediately understands the speech of the birds, who advise him to eat the heart himself in order to become wiser. Sigurd is not unique in being magically influenced by a substance that he eats. Foods and beverages that have magical effects on those who ingest them are a widespread occurrence in the literature of many …

Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants; Final Rule To Designate The Whooping Cranes Of The Rocky Mountains As Experimental Nonessential And To Remove Whooping Crane Critical Habitat Designations From Four Locations
Endangered Species Bulletin
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service determines that it will designate the whooping crane (Grus americana) population of the Rocky Mountains as an experimental nonessential population and will remove whooping crane critical habitat designations from four National Wildlife Refuges; Bosque del Apache in New Mexico, Monte Vista and Alamosa in Colorado, and Grays Lake in Idaho. The private lands involved are holdings inside refuge boundaries and a 1-mile buffer around Grays Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The Service will use this population, and captive-reared sandhill cranes and whooping cranes, in experiments to evaluate methods for introducing whooping cranes into …

Accumulation Of Lead By Anabaena Cylindrica: Mathematical Modeling And An Energy Dispersive X-Ray Study, David T. Swift, Daniel Forciniti
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The ability of microorganisms to selectively adsorb various heavy metal ions has been recognized for over a decade. We have investigated the biosorption of lead by an active culture of the cyanobacterium Anabaena cylindrica. Energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis was used to evaluate the different uptake mechanisms in the various subcellular regions. Three were identified; a very fast adsorption mechanism in the cell envelope; a time- dependent deposition reaction on the cell surface; and an adsorption mechanism, also time dependent, on the polyphosphate body inside the cell. Atomic absorption spectrometry was then used to quantify the changes with time of bulk …

Ecology Of Bighorn Sheep In Relation To Habitat And Oil Development In The Little Missouri Badlands., Roger Sayre
Theses and Dissertations
I conducted field research on bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana) in western North Dakota to evaluate their distribution, habitat use, activity patterns, and responses to disturbance. The study was conducted May-December from 1992-94, at Magpie Creek, an area with a high density of roads and oil wells, and Moody Plateau, with a low density of roads and oil wells.Radio-collared ewes (n = 8) at Magpie Creek used steep non-vegetated terrain more than available during summer, but less than available during fall. They used closed juniper areas less than available during summer and fall, but used disturbed habitats more than available …
