Prejudice Toward Fat People: The Development And Validation Of The Antifat Attitudes Test, Robin J. Lewis, Thomas F. Cash, Lora Jacobi, Cristina Bubb-Lewis

Psychology Faculty Publications

Although the stigma of obesity in our society is well documented, the measurement of antifat attitudes has been a difficult undertaking, Two studies were conducted to construct and validate the Antifat Attitudes Test (AFAT), In study 1, college students (110 men and 175 women) completed the preliminary 54-item AFAT and specific indices of body image and weight-related concerns, Psychometric and factor analysis revealed a 47-item composite scale and three internally consistent factors that were uncorrelated with social desirability: Social/Character Disparagement, Physical/Romantic Unattractiveness, and Weight Control/Blame. Several body image correlates of antifat prejudice were identified, and men expressed more negative attitudes …

Evaluation Of Sampling Gear For Predicting Harvest Size, Yield And Incidence Of Stunting In Crawfish Ponds., Jimmy Lee Avery Jan 1997

Evaluation Of Sampling Gear For Predicting Harvest Size, Yield And Incidence Of Stunting In Crawfish Ponds., Jimmy Lee Avery

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Dip-nets, test traps and experimental drop samplers were evaluated for their potential to predict crawfish (Procambarus spp.) yields and size distribution at harvest. Field studies were conducted at the Rice Research Station, LSU Agricultural Center, Crowley, Louisiana, between 1991 and 1996 in 82 (0.16-0.2 ha) earthen impoundments. Fields were managed to simulate rice-crawfish systems typical of the southwestern and south-central Louisiana. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the relationship among catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) of sampling gear (alone and in combination) with respect to yield in weight (kg/ha), yield in number (crawfish/ha) and size distribution at harvest. Relative abundance of …

The Evolution Of Landscapes And Lineages In Pitcher Plants And Their Moths., Margaret Ellen Oard Jan 1997

The Evolution Of Landscapes And Lineages In Pitcher Plants And Their Moths., Margaret Ellen Oard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Pitcher plants and pitcher plant moths exhibit two prominent themes in the long evolutionary history between plants and insects. These themes are carnivory and herbivory. In pitcher plants, the leaf has been modified into an elegant pitfall trap enabling these plants to subsist at both the producer and consumer trophic levels. Of the numerous insect species intimately associated with pitcher plants, pitcher plant moths are the only inquilines which have evolved the capacity to disrupt both the carnivore and photosynthetic functions of the host plant. The carnivorous habit, considered an adaptation for nutrient deficient environments, has contributed to species radiations …

The Polysaccharide Capsule Of Vibrio Vulnificus: Virulence, Transposon Mutagenesis, And The Identification Of An Essential Gene., Amy Buscher Zuppardo Jan 1997

The Polysaccharide Capsule Of Vibrio Vulnificus: Virulence, Transposon Mutagenesis, And The Identification Of An Essential Gene., Amy Buscher Zuppardo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The extracellular capsule polysaccharide (CPS) of Vibrio vulnificus is a primary virulence factor which allows survival of the bacteria in the human host. To study the genes involved in the production of the polysaccharide capsule, 23 mutants were generated that lost their ability to produce CPS due to the insertion of a mini-transposon into the genome of the encapsulated clinical strain V. vulnificus 1003 (O). The mutants were examined by Southern blot analysis to ensure the transposon had inserted only once in the chromosome. Exoenzymes, which are believed to contribute to the virulence of the organism, produced by all 23 …

The Effects Of Hypoestrogenism On Rest And Acute Submaximal Exercise Metabolism Using A Gnrh Agonist Analogue Model., Sheri Anne Melton Jan 1997

The Effects Of Hypoestrogenism On Rest And Acute Submaximal Exercise Metabolism Using A Gnrh Agonist Analogue Model., Sheri Anne Melton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During menopause, many women experience weight gain which is mostly in the form of abdominal and upper body fat deposition. This phenomenon has been recognized as an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease in females. Other disease processes, such as diabetes, hypertension and some cancers, specifically, breast and esophageal have been linked to obesity. Thus, the occurrence of increased body fat is placing the postmenopausal female in jeopardy of a potential life-threatening position. The connection between the lack of estrogen seen in menopause and weight gain remains unclear, but studies have shown that estrogen status may affect carbohydrate and fat metabolism. …

Reduction And Management Of Risks Associated With Aflatoxin And Fumonisin Contamination In Corn., Socrates Trujillo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Aflatoxins and fumonisins, secondary mold metabolites, occur naturally as co-contaminants in corn. Health and economic risks associated with this contamination of food and feed have been the focus of much research worldwide. Research programs resulting from the discovery of aflatoxins in the 1960's has been used to guide study programs for fumonisins. The establishment of food safety programs, including mycotoxin decontamination procedures, must be evaluated for further application. The evaluation of selected procedures which reduce the risks associated with the contamination of these mycotoxins in food utilized for human and animal consumption was the focus of this study. This study …

Production Of Transgenic Channel Catfish., Mark Christian Bates Jan 1997

Production Of Transgenic Channel Catfish., Mark Christian Bates

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The channel catfish industry has experienced tremendous growth over the last several years. This growth has triggered more intensive culture practices resulting in disease outbreaks and devastating mortalities. Medicated feeds and vaccination have been of limited use. This research presents studies on techniques to produce disease resistant channel catfish by gene transfer. The gene used was the cecropin B gene from the giant silkworm moth Hyalophora cecropia, controlled by an acute phase response (APR) promoter also from H. cecropia. The objectives of this study were to: (1) determine if an early maturing population of catfish from Lake Maurepas, Louisiana, could …

The Radioresistance Of Deinococcus Radiodurans., Valerie Mattimore Jan 1997

The Radioresistance Of Deinococcus Radiodurans., Valerie Mattimore

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Deinococcus radiodurans is a remarkably ionizing radiation resistant bacterium. As a vegetative cell it is capable of withstanding 5,000 Gy ionizing radiation without evidence of death or mutation. D. radiodurans survives irradiation by repairing DNA damage via an extremely efficient DNA repair system. However, this DNA repair system has not been completely defined. In addition, the selective process allowing the evolution of high level radioresistance has remained a question. This dissertation bolsters the understanding of the DNA repair system of D. radiodurans by characterizing a collection of ionizing radiation sensitive (IRS) mutants. The level of radioresistance is quantified and transformation …

Protecting And Promoting Wildlife And Habitat On State And Private Land In Washington's Arid Interior, Gregory A. Hicks Jan 1997

Protecting And Promoting Wildlife And Habitat On State And Private Land In Washington's Arid Interior, Gregory A. Hicks

Articles

The object of this paper is to describe efforts now under way in the interior uplands of Washington State's Columbia Plain to restore and protect upland wildlife habitat and wildlife species in a busy and intensively used agricultural and range landscape. It is a landscape of greatly diminished ecological integrity, dominated by private land holdings, and where the remaining public lands are recovering from earlier periods of farming or grazing or still dedicated to productive use under lease or permit. Recent ecosystem assessments make clear that there are few areas of the Columbia Plain's original grass and shrub land which …

Evidence That Elevated C02 Levels And Indirectly Increase Rhizosphere Denitrifier Activity, John M. Stark, D. Smart, K. Ritchie, Bruce Bugbee Jan 1997

Evidence That Elevated C02 Levels And Indirectly Increase Rhizosphere Denitrifier Activity, John M. Stark, D. Smart, K. Ritchie, Bruce Bugbee

Biology Faculty Publications

We examined the influence of elevated CO2 concentration on denitrifier enzyme activity in wheat rhizoplanes by using controlled environments and solution culture techniques. Potential denitrification activity was from 3 to 24 times higher on roots that were grown under an elevated CO2 concentration of 1,000 micromoles of CO2 mol-1 than on roots grown under ambient levels of CO2. Nitrogen loss, as determined by a nitrogen mass balance, increased with elevated CO2 levels in the shoot environment and with a high NO3- concentration in the rooting zone. These results indicated that aerial CO2 concentration can play a role in rhizosphere denitrifier …

The Development Of On-Line Microwave Digestion Techniques For Environmental Matrices, Kathryn Judith Lamble

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

As a consequence of our advancing knowledge of the impact of trace elements in environmental and biological systems there is increasing need for quantitative analytical techniques to accurately, sensitively and rapidly determine a wide range of trace elements in environmental samples. Since their emergence in 1975 microwave digestion techniques have revolutionised conventional approaches to sample digestion and have rapidly gained widespread acceptance as an effective method of sample preparation. This thesis describes how a number of novel on-line microwave digestion techniques have been developed, characterised and applied to the digestion of a range of environmental matrices which have proved time …

Trace Metals In Blood And Urine As Potential Markers Of Bone Breakdown In Patients With Bone Metastases, Fiona Jane Roberts Jan 1997

Trace Metals In Blood And Urine As Potential Markers Of Bone Breakdown In Patients With Bone Metastases, Fiona Jane Roberts

Other Faculty of Health Theses

In the western world cancer is the second most important cause of death, after heart disease, accounting for 20-25% of all mortalities, and is today probably one of the most feared diseases. Approximately one third of all cancer patients will develop skeletal metastases (secondary bone cancer). Early diagnosis and effective monitoring during treatment is therefore essential in terms of making any impact on survival rates and developing new cancer therapies. Unfortunately, the current methods for diagnosing and measuring bone metastases, such as bone scans and urinary hydroxyproline determinations, lack sensitivity and specificity. The urinary pyridinium crosslinks, pyridinoline (PYD) and deoxypyridinoline …

Improving The Performance Of Weaner Pigs Through Developments In Liquid Feeding, Tina Maria Geary Jan 1997

Improving The Performance Of Weaner Pigs Through Developments In Liquid Feeding, Tina Maria Geary

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

A programme of work was undertaken to assess the efficacy of a new automated ad libitum feed delivery system for newly weaned pigs; to investigate the effects of liquid feeding on their performance and to explore the possibilities for reducing diet cost by using lower cost liquid components. A series of 28 day feeding trials was conducted using pigs weaned at 24 ± 4 days and fed ad libitum on liquid diets. Compared with pigs fed dry diets, liquid feeding increased feed intake by 109 ± 10 g dˉ¹ (P<0.001) and daily gain by 57± 14 g dˉ¹ (P<0.001). Pig growth and feed conversion ratio was not significantly influenced by dry matter content over the range of 255 - 149 g DM kgˉ¹. However, diets containing less than 220 g DM kgˉ¹ increased effluent output per kg of liveweight gain. Within the liquid feed system a natural lactic acid fermentation occurred which reduced diet pH ≤ 4.0 and inhibited the growth of coliform bacteria. Pigs fed diets in which pH was reduced to ≤ 4.0 by acidification with either lactic acid or Pediococcus acidilactici had daily gains of 496 and 474 ± 17 g dˉ¹ and feed conversion ratios of 1.11 and 1.15 ± 0.06 respectively. A series of laboratory studies was conducted with the aim of upgrading and controlling fermentation of food industry liquid residues for use in liquid diets for weaners. Steeping was investigated as a method for reducing glycoalkaloid levels in reject raw potatoes. A combination of natural fermentation and hydrolysis reduced the levels of α-solanine by 16.6 mg kgˉ¹ (35%) and α-chaconine by 28.7 mg kgˉ¹ (51%) respectively. Diets based on the food industry liquid residues (Whey, 'C'-Starch and Greenwich Gold), were either allowed to ferment naturally or inoculated with Enterococcus faecium or Pediococcus acidilactici. Inoculation with either Enterococcus faecium or Pediococcus acidilactici did not result in a significant difference in the final pH of the diets or in the final populations of microorganisms examined compared with the control. The series of studies demonstrated the potential for improving weaner pigs performance using fermented liquid diets. However, it highlighted the need for further studies to obtain a greater degree of control over fermentation patterns.

The Justification Of A Packaging Line Based On Capacity Issues, Chin Ho

Theses

Due to the phenomenal increase in the long range marketing forecast for the products manufactured at the Garden City site of DuPont Merck Pharmaceuticals, a capacity problem was identified. This paper evaluates the impact of the increased forecast and demands on the packaging operations, and also the justification of a packaging line to support the expected capacity overload. It addresses different alternatives available to the company to support the demand and evaluate these options based on cash flow analysis. In addition, the study allows the general reader outside the company to understand the methodology involved in the justification of a …

Moisture Gain Of Biscuits In Hermetically-Sealed Packages Versus Non-Hermetically-Sealed Packages, Amran Alabakan Jan 1997

Moisture Gain Of Biscuits In Hermetically-Sealed Packages Versus Non-Hermetically-Sealed Packages, Amran Alabakan

Theses

The objective of this study was to examine the affect of hermetic sealing on extending the shelf life of a biscuit product. Hermetically sealed packages were compared with non-hermetically-sealed packages received from the biscuit manufacturer. The package materials were the same so the only variable was the hermetic integrity of the package. A pressure test was conducted to determine the hermetic integrity of the package samples. The maximum moisture content that the biscuits gained before they were considered spoiled was then determined. Moisture gain of biscuit products kept in a 100% RH environment was monitored by recording the changes in …
