After participation, posttests were collected on the SFI, the problem scenarios, and a Client Rating Counseling Outcome (CRCO) scale. Results showed that the STEP program is …

A Comparison Of Roasting Pit Complexes In Southern Nevada, Connie Langford Vonsleichter Jan 1997

A Comparison Of Roasting Pit Complexes In Southern Nevada, Connie Langford Vonsleichter

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Roasting pits in southern Nevada are commonly thought to have functioned to process agave. This assumption is based on the presence of agave quids, the proximity of roasting pits to agave stands, and on ethnographic accounts of agave roasting. Soil samples from two roasting pit complexes confirm this contention, and suggest a secondary use of the features to singe spines off cacti. These conclusions are supported by research on Arizona Strip and Hohokam roasting pits.

The Relationship Between Chronic Alcohol Abuse And Information Processing Ability In Older Adults, Christopher P. Bertram Jan 1997

The Relationship Between Chronic Alcohol Abuse And Information Processing Ability In Older Adults, Christopher P. Bertram

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The issue of alcohol use and abuse among older adults is one that is gaining attention in current literature. Although it is an important issue, empirical evidence within the domain of alcohol, aging, and cognition, is sparse. Thus, the proposed preliminary study was designed to examine the relationship between chronic alcohol consumption and information processing speed in older adults. Eight matched participants (4 per group, mean age 56 years) were divided into two groups: Alcoholic or non-alcoholic. Participants were assigned to their respective group and matched based on the information provided on a health questionnaire. All participants completed a series …

Determinants Of Health Promotion Behavior In Active Duty Air Force Personnel, Bridgette Jolene Grabowski Jan 1997

Determinants Of Health Promotion Behavior In Active Duty Air Force Personnel, Bridgette Jolene Grabowski

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Today's health care system has increasingly focused on health promotion and disease prevention activities. Within the United States' Air Force, emphasis has also been placed on health promoting lifestyle activities. However, the Air Force has a paucity of research regarding health promotion behavior and characteristics that influence a healthy lifestyle. The purpose of this research study was to determine the extent perceived locus of control and demographic factors, as selected factors of Nola Pender's Health Promotion Model, can predict health promotion behavior in a random sample of 217 active duty AF personnel assigned to a southwestern base. The results of …

Comparison Of Myocardial Infarction Symptoms, Risk Factors, And Enzyme Levels Between Black And White Males, Sharon Laree Mallory

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Studies have shown that racial groups experience pain and symptoms of a myocardial infarction differently (Neill, 1993; Clarke, 1996). Based on this premise, the purpose of this study was to investigate if Black males (n = 42) and White males (n = 96) experience the signs and symptoms of a myocardial infarction differently. This study also compared age, pain levels, risk factors, and cardiac enzyme levels. The sample was drawn randomly by chart review from a Southwest area county hospital; Results of the chi-square analysis indicated that significant differences in the type of myocardial infarction symptoms experienced were chest pain …

Health Patterns Of Nurses Who Smoke, John Louis Yuhos

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This descriptive comparative study examined the usefulness of Pender's (1996) Health Promotion Model to explain the occurrence and differences of health-promoting behavior between nurses who smoke and nurses who do not. A convenience sample of 283 nurses completed two assessment instruments, the Health-Promoting Life-Style Profile (HPLP-II) and the Self-Rated Abilities for Health Practices Scale. Significant differences were found in the mean scores on subscales of the HPLP-II and the Self-Rated Abilities for Health Practices Scale between nurses who smoke and those who do not. A posteriori comparisons of three groups of nurses; current smoking nurses, former smoking nurses and never …

An Ethnography Of Homeless Men In Las Vegas, Kurt B Borchard Jan 1997

An Ethnography Of Homeless Men In Las Vegas, Kurt B Borchard

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Most recent research on homeless men (1) uses quantitative methods, (2) frequently blames homeless men for being homeless, and (3) does not consider the different meanings different groups assign to homelessness. These studies cannot address (1) the usefulness of other methods in studying homelessness, (2) what other factors beyond personal problems may contribute to homelessness, and (3) how different groups in different locales view the condition; In this dissertation I use qualitative methods first to think about the popular meanings of male homelessness in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the late 1990s, and second, to consider the meanings that local homeless …

The Effect Of Wetsuit Leg Coverage On Swimming Speed And Selected Physiological Measures, Peggy-Lynn Dursthoff

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The effect of wetsuit leg coverage on swimming speed and body temperatures was investigated by having 10 triathletes swim 1500 meters 4 times in two different water temperatures in short sleeved wetsuits. Subjects swam twice in a full wetsuit which covered the leg to the ankle and twice in a wetsuit which ended at mid-thigh. Four skin temperatures, esophageal temperature and swimming speed were measured during each swim. A 2 x 2 analysis of variance was performed on each dependant variable. In addition a 2 x 2 Manova was done to test for differences in the means of all skin …

The Changing Economic Circumstances Of The Elderly: Income, Wealth, And Social Security, James P. Smith Jan 1997

The Changing Economic Circumstances Of The Elderly: Income, Wealth, And Social Security, James P. Smith

Center for Policy Research

How is the economic status of the elderly changing and what are their prospects for the future? My portrait tells us how well off they are on average, but also about the vast disparities that exist among them. This description includes an often neglected measure of their economic well-being--the amount of wealth they control. Amazingly little is known about how much personal wealth older people have and how and what determines its distribution. But the conventional definition of household wealth ignores two critical components of wealth: the expected income flows from pensions and Social Security. For some elderly households, Social …

Effect Of Shigellosis On Serum Concentration And Urinary Excretion Of Retinol, Amal Krishna Mitra Jan 1997

Effect Of Shigellosis On Serum Concentration And Urinary Excretion Of Retinol, Amal Krishna Mitra

All ETDs from UAB

Urinary retinol excretion was measured in 206 children aged 5 mo to 5 y with various illnesses. The mechanism of retinol excretion was examined in patients who had Shigella infection (n = 66). Serum retinol concentrations in patients with shigellosis were very low at admission, and increased significantly by discharge (0.36 $\pm$ 0.22 vs. 1.15 $\pm$ 0.50 $\mu$mol/L, $p < 0.001),$ although no vitamin A supplements were given. Poor nutritional status (wt/age z-score), and S. dysenteriae infection significantly predicted admission serum retinol, after controlling for possible confounding variables. Retinol loss in the urine was significantly higher among children with sepsis (0.154 $\pm$ 0.148 $\mu$mol/d) than among the other groups. Among those with shigellosis, infection due to S. dysenteriae was associated with a significantly higher amount of urinary retinol excretion compared to other Shigella (0.048 $\pm$ 0.127 vs. 0.002 $\pm$ 0.005 $\mu$mol/d, p = 0.015). The threshold of excreting $>$0.1 $\mu$mol/d increases substantially when body temperature is ${\ge}40\sp\circ$C and acute phase proteins (CRP and AGP) reach high serum concentrations, indicating a severely sick patient who is excreting a greater amount of urinary retinol. Proximal tubular function was compromized in children …

Academic Discipline, Mentoring, And The Career Commitment Of Women Faculty., Gloria Tara Nye Jan 1997

Academic Discipline, Mentoring, And The Career Commitment Of Women Faculty., Gloria Tara Nye

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Women continue to be underrepresented as faculty at U.S. universities, especially in the physical sciences and engineering. The belief that only women can adequately serve as role models and mentors for other women may be a roadblock to progress for women in disciplines where they are underrepresented. This study of women faculty investigates how female career commitment is influenced by academic discipline and mentoring. The survey responses of sixty-six tenure-track women faculty were used to obtain data for both science or engineering and non-science or engineering academic disciplines at three public Ph.D. granting research universities. The women faculty in science …

Development And In Vivo Evaluation Of A Pura Mutant Strain Of The Channel Catfish Pathogen Edwardsiella Ictaluri., Mark Lee Lawrence

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Edwardsiella ictaluri is the causative agent of enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC), which is the most serious disease affecting the channel catfish industry. Killed vaccines have been inconsistent in providing protection against ESC, and no live attenuated vaccines have been described. The purpose of this study was to develop a nutritionally attenuated mutant strain of E. ictaluri and evaluate its virulence and vaccine efficacy. An E. ictaluri genomic library was constructed, and a clone containing the purA gene was isolated and sequenced. The E. ictaluri purA gene was found to have several features in common with the E. coli purA …

Acid Solubilization Of Fish Protein For Production Of Protein Hydrolysate., Ercument Ozer Jan 1997

Acid Solubilization Of Fish Protein For Production Of Protein Hydrolysate., Ercument Ozer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The mechanism of fish protein solubilization by acid hydrolysis at elevated temperatures was investigated. Rate expressions for the solubilization were determined using pilot scale data with two different rate determination methods. A postulated mechanism was verified and estimated rates were evaluated on five independent verification experiments. A functional relationship between nonprotein byproduct concentration and whiteness of fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) was developed. Initial and set-point operating variables were calculated to produce FPH with acceptable color characteristics for food use. A batch reactor was used for duplicate hydrolysis trials conducted at three acid and three temperature levels for four hours. Samples …

Amino Acid Requirements And Crystalline Amino Acids For Finishing Pigs., Theresia Alice Knowles

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research was conducted to obtain a better understanding of the amino acid needs of finishing pigs. Twelve experiments were conducted using the urea nitrogen method to determine the lysine requirement of gilts and barrows. Two experiments were conducted to determine the optimum ratio of total sulfur amino acids to lysine for finishing pigs (74 to 111 kg); and three experiments were conducted to evaluate the net energy content of low crude protein, crystalline amino acid supplemented diets for finishing pigs (70 to 117 kg). The lysine requirement of gilts, as determined by the urea nitrogen method, decreased as body …
