Problems With The Interpretation Of Mark-Release-Recapture Data In Subterranean Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), Anthony D. Curtis, Deborah A. Waller
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The Lincoln index (Peterson method) is frequently used to estimate animal population size in mark-release-recapture studies. We tested the accuracy of this method to estimate termite colony size using logs infested with termites that were maintained in the laboratory. Termites were fed paper towels dyed either with 0.05% or 0.1% (w/w) of the dye marker Nile blue and released into their host logs in the laboratory. Following recapture a week later, estimates of termite population size for termites dyed with 0.05% Nile blue, and were approximately 3 times greater for termites dyed with 0.1% Nile blue. Concentrations of 0.1% Nile …

Leadership In Community Health Organizations, Stephanie C. Eken
Leadership In Community Health Organizations, Stephanie C. Eken
Honors Theses
The purpose of this project was to analyze the characteristics and motivations of leaders in community health organizations and determine if they were initiators and collaborators in bringing about real change in providing health care for their own neighborhoods. To date, there has been little research concerning leadership in the medical field and even less addressing leadership in community health organizations. Yet, every day there are "ordinary" people making significant changes in the lives of Virginians through community-based health promotion. Their efforts and accomplishments in community health care can provide new insight into leadership in an evolving context and in …
Present To Future : The Innovations Of Leadership Studies, Christopher Hartman Engels
Present To Future : The Innovations Of Leadership Studies, Christopher Hartman Engels
Honors Theses
Formal leadership education is the latest craze at the secondary level of education. Private high schools have for years stated in their brochures that their school produces leaders. However, only recently are these same schools clearly articulating a more formal structure in leadership education. An in-depth case study analysis of three private high schools in Virginia will not only allow for a look at their leadership curricula, but will allow for conclusion to be made about the best possible means of teaching leadership.

The Integration Of The Long Term Care Continuum Into A Seamless Health Delivery System, Viriginia E. Moseley
The Integration Of The Long Term Care Continuum Into A Seamless Health Delivery System, Viriginia E. Moseley
Theses
A seamless continuum of healthcare services is necessary to serve older adults, caregivers and the community. Personal knowledge and experience of the author, a nurse and skilled nursing facility administrator, is combined with a literature review to determine a vision for serving older adults and caregivers. A vertical integration of long term care into a health delivery network traditionally focused on acute and primary care is proposed.
Caring For Our Elders: An African-American Perspective, Wilma Virginia Saunders Schmitz
Caring For Our Elders: An African-American Perspective, Wilma Virginia Saunders Schmitz
Theses
Wilma Virginia Saunders Schmitz's study explores the caregiving networks that support African American elders, emphasizing the intersection between informal and formal care. Informal care, often provided by family, friends, and faith communities, remains a primary means of elder support within African American culture. The thesis examines how cultural traditions, religious involvement, historical factors, and socioeconomic barriers shape caregiving practices. Schmitz highlights the importance of the extended family concept, the "village" approach, and the critical role of faith communities in providing both emotional and practical assistance. The study also addresses challenges such as limited access to formal care services, economic disparities, …

Opening A Child Care Facility: Tomorrow's Stars, Star E. Seeger
Theses
This thesis focuses on the child care industry and the feasibility of opening a child care center in the O'Fallon, Missouri area. It takes a look at the industry from both a national level as well as a local level, analyzing the history, business philosophy, marketing strategies, financial components, competition, management needs, and the service itself.
Research shows there is a definite lack of quality child care centers to care for the number of children in the United States who are between the ages of six months and twelve years. This is also the case in the O'Fallon area where …

Marketing Lindenwood University Through A Promotional Video, Deidamia Batista, Karen Cordoba
Theses
In recent times video productions have been used as an effective sales tool. Moving pictures, like those that video provides. are an effective way to communicate in a quickly growing business market. With a video a company is able to reach and approach clients more effectively, because they can present information which is attractive to people.
We have seen over the last decade that the use of technology has invaded every market, including the education market. It is common to see how the business community within the education center has been quick to embrace video for many different purposes-one of …

Varietal Differences In The Total And Enantiomeric Composition Of Theanine In Tea, K. Helen Ekborg-Ott, Andre Taylor, Daniel W. Armstrong
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Theanine is the main amino acid component in tea. It usually constitutes between 1 and 2% of the dry weight of the tea leaves. It is as prevalent in tea as all other free amino acids combined. Both enantiomers of theanine were found to have a similar sweet taste, with little or no aftertaste. It was found that black and half-green teas (except for Formosa Oolong) contained as much, or more, theanine as green teas. No correlation was found between the absolute concentration of theanine in tea and its enantiomeric composition. An inverse correlation was found between certain grades of …

Project Summaries
We are delighted that you have agreed to participate in this exciting opportunity for TVI faculty and students to become involved in Service-Learning!
The concept of service-learning is not new, of course, but in the past decade, many higher education professionals have taken the lead in promoting this as an essential dimension of the college experience. Campus Compact, for example is a consortium of over 500 college presidents who have mandated integrating service programs into their institutions. Simultaneously, the American Association of Community Colleges has recently awarded 15 grants to community colleges to create Learn and Serve Program, to develop …

Jane Addams On Autonomy And Responsibility, Marilyn Fischer
Jane Addams On Autonomy And Responsibility, Marilyn Fischer
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Addams understands autonomy and responsibility from the perspective of American pragmatism. Like her collaborator and friend, John Dewey, Addams believes one ascertains an idea's meaning and truth by applying it in practice. Hull House was founded explicitly as a pragmatist test for her ideas on ethics and social change (Lagemann 1994, 77).
Verifying philosophical ideas rests on two methodological prerequisites: concrete experience and sympathetic understanding. Addams repeatedly stresses how emotions serve as the starting point for ethical change, although they need to be cultivated and guided by experience and reason. In addressing social problems, Hull House residents first gathered statistics …

This book provides a multidisciplinary examination of the complex social issues surrounding adolescent health and health care delivery. It draws specifically on the resources of Catholic social teaching, presents an overview of the medical problems common among young people, and explores the social and familial contexts in which these problems arise. The insights gained from Catholic moral teaching are included with those of social science and …
