Faculty Publications

Objectives. This study was undertaken to describe the distribution of blood pressures, hypertension prevalence, and associated risk factors among seven populations of West African origin. Methods. The rates of hypertension in West Africa (Nigeria and Cameroon), the Caribbean (Jamaica, St. Lucia, Barbados), and the United States (metropolitan Chicago, Illinois) were compared on the basis of a highly standardized collaborative protocol. After researchers were given central training in survey methods, population-based samples of 800 to 2500 adults over the age of 25 were examined in seven sites, yielding a total sample of 10 014. Results. A consistent gradient of hypertension prevalence …

Leptin Concentration In Women Is Influenced By Regional Distribution Of Adipose Tissue, Franklyn I. Bennett, Norma Mcfarlane-Anderson, Rainford Wilks, Amy Luke, Richard S. Cooper, Terrence E. Forrester Jan 1997

Leptin Concentration In Women Is Influenced By Regional Distribution Of Adipose Tissue, Franklyn I. Bennett, Norma Mcfarlane-Anderson, Rainford Wilks, Amy Luke, Richard S. Cooper, Terrence E. Forrester

Faculty Publications

Leptin concentrations in humans are increased with obesity, and women have higher leptin concentrations than men. This sex difference reflects the greater fat mass of women. However, there is evidence that factors other than the size of the adipose tissue mass contribute to serum leptin concentrations. This study was undertaken to determine whether anthropometric factors influenced leptin concentrations in our population. Leptin concentrations were measured in 375 persons from a population study of hypertension and diabetes for whom body-composition data (bioelectrical impedance analysis and anthropometry) were available. Serum leptin concentrations were more than four times higher in women than in …

Roosting Behavior And Group Territoriality In American Crows, Donald F. Caccamise, Lisa M. Reed, Jerzy Romanowski, Philip C. Stouffer Jan 1997

Roosting Behavior And Group Territoriality In American Crows, Donald F. Caccamise, Lisa M. Reed, Jerzy Romanowski, Philip C. Stouffer

Faculty Publications

Cooperative groups of American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) maintain group territories year-round while often traveling long distances to roost communally at night. Our goal was to discover how territorial crows resolve the conflict between the cohesive nature of group behavior with requirements of dispersal to roost communally. We color-marked crows to study group composition over two years, and radio-tagged crows to study movement among roosts, territories, and feeding areas. Most crows showed diurnal fidelity to the group territory throughout the year. Yet, most birds frequently left territories during the day to forage up to 4 km away. At night, crows roosted …

Optimizing Acceptability Of Chicken Nuggets Containing Fermented Cowpea And Peanut Flours, W. Prinyawiwatkul, K. H. Mcwatters, L. R. Beuchat, R. D. Phillips Jan 1997

Optimizing Acceptability Of Chicken Nuggets Containing Fermented Cowpea And Peanut Flours, W. Prinyawiwatkul, K. H. Mcwatters, L. R. Beuchat, R. D. Phillips

Faculty Publications

A mixture design was used to optimize the sensory acceptability (appearance, color, flavor, texture, and overall liking) of chicken nuggets containing flours processed from fermented cowpeas (FCF) and fermented partially defatted peanuts (FPDPF). Flavor and texture acceptability correlated highly with overall liking of nuggets. Products containing 20% FCF or FPDPF alone or in combination were unacceptable. Nuggets containing a mixture of 2.5% FCF and 2.5% FPDPF were as acceptable as the control, with a sweet, chickeny flavor. This suggests market potential for such poultry products.

Human Mate Selection Based On Developmental Stability As Signaled Through Physical Attractiveness: An Assessment Of The Traits Used To Determine Attractiveness And The Evolutionary Mechanisms For Their Development, Erin H. Kimmerle Jan 1997

Human Mate Selection Based On Developmental Stability As Signaled Through Physical Attractiveness: An Assessment Of The Traits Used To Determine Attractiveness And The Evolutionary Mechanisms For Their Development, Erin H. Kimmerle

Nebraska Anthropologist

What are the criteria used to select a mate? Study of this question on non-human subjects has shown many organisms choose mates based on assessments of health, youthfulness, and fertility, as signaled through certain physical characteristics. Investigations into the mating behaviors of humans, cross-cultural studies of attractiveness, and current medical research link features of attractiveness with health and support the evolutionary perspective that beauty is more than an arbitrary cultural creation. The characteristics which males and females find attractive in the opposite sex are largely the results of the evolution of sexual selection and serve to inform potential mates of …

Human Responses To Bison Nutritional Variability: An Illustration From The Central Plains, Chris Widga Jan 1997

Human Responses To Bison Nutritional Variability: An Illustration From The Central Plains, Chris Widga

Nebraska Anthropologist

The relation of prehistoric human groups to bison populations in the Central Plains has long been the subject of both speculation and debate. Recent research has shown that bison are relatively sensitive to changing environmental conditions (Bamforth, 1988; Bozell, 1995; Speth and Pany, 1978; Emerson, 1990). This sensitivity is visible in physiological and behavioral adaptations used by bison to deal with change. Ukewise, evidence for these adaptations is present in faunal assemblages from Central Plains archaeological sites. In order to determine the nature of these adaptive charaderistics, a model must be developed which goes beyond traditional presence/absence tabulations of faunal …

Use Of The Relative Dose Response Assay To Determine The Vitamin A Status Of Neonatal Calves: Effects Of Season On Colostrum Quality And Immunological Parameters, Mary Jo Boner Jan 1997

Use Of The Relative Dose Response Assay To Determine The Vitamin A Status Of Neonatal Calves: Effects Of Season On Colostrum Quality And Immunological Parameters, Mary Jo Boner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Plasma vitamin A is not a reliable indicator of vitamin A status. Therefore, the feasibility of using the relative dose response (RDR) assay as a method for determining vitamin A status of calves was examined. In addition, effects of colostrum quality and season on vitamin A status and health of calves were determined. Blood was sampled from the jugular vein of 16 newborn calves to establish values over a 24 h period for immunoglobulin M (IgM) concentration, hematocrit, serum protein concentration, and leukocyte differentials. Liver biopsies were performed at birth, and successfully completed for 11 calves. Blood samples were obtained …

A Computer Automated, Hydraulically Integrated Serial Turbidostat Algal Reactor (Histar): Mathematical Modeling And Experimental Analysis., Chandra Sekhar Theegala

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Conceptually, the Hydraulically Integrated Serial Turbidostat Algal Reactor (HISTAR) has two components: (1) sealed turbidostats for producing a high quality algal inoculum, and (2) a series of unprotected inter-connected continuous flow stirred tank reactors (CFSTRs) for mass producing algae under approximated plug flow conditions. The hydraulic retention time of each individual CFSTR ($\theta\sb{\rm n})$ is set low enough (dilution is set high) that any suspended organisms (both contaminants and desired algae) entering the CFSTR would be washed to the next CFSTR well within their doubling time. However, as the turbidostats are employed to inoculate the first CFSTR on an almost …

Lower Extremity Strength Training To Decrease Falls In The Elderly, Kelly L. Spadolini Jan 1997

Lower Extremity Strength Training To Decrease Falls In The Elderly, Kelly L. Spadolini

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

p>As the elderly population grows, the health care needs of people over the age of sixty-five will dominate the medical profession. Methods of prevention of health problems are key to providing the optimal medical care. Falling has been reported as the most prevalent means of injury in older people. One third of all seniors living in the community and one half of those residing in nursing homes fall each year. Research indicates that elderly people who fall have weaker lower extremity strength than elderly people who do not fall. As a result, some clinicians have incorporated strengthening regiments into …

Child Abuse And Its Implications For Physical Therapists, Tanya Surdez Jan 1997

Child Abuse And Its Implications For Physical Therapists, Tanya Surdez

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Child abuse has existed for many centuries, but has only recently been recognized as a serious social problem. Child abuse affects millions of children each year from all income, racial and ethnic groups; thereby affecting society as a whole. Many studies have shown the devastating psychological, social, cognitive and physical effects of child abuse. There are a limited number of studies that demonstrate the role of physical therapists in working with victims of abuse. It is necessary that therapists learn to recognize signs and symptoms of abuse and know the appropriate action to take.

The purpose of this study is …

Athletic Nutrition, Glenn M. Taira Jan 1997

Athletic Nutrition, Glenn M. Taira

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Science has broken down many of the barriers that once kept athletes from performing at their very best. This has been done through the scientific study of athletes and the development of a combination of proper training, technique, mental attitude, and nutrition. While training and technique are variables that come with time and practice, proper nutrition can produce positive changes in an athlete's performance in a relatively short period of time. Eating the right kinds of foods, in the right proportions, for a given type of athletic event (Le. aerobic, anaerobic, strength, and muscular definition) can provide an athlete the …

A Physical Therapy Perspective On Rotator Cuff Disease, Tiffany R. Wirz Jan 1997

A Physical Therapy Perspective On Rotator Cuff Disease, Tiffany R. Wirz

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Rotator Cuff disease is one of the most common shoulder problems seen in the medical setting today. It spans all ages ranging from the young athlete who suffers from overuse syndrome to the older individual who experiences decreased function due to degenerative changes within the shoulder joint.

The chief causes of rotator cuff tears are traumatic il1iury and degenerative changes. Tears resulting from trauma usually occur from a lateral blow to the shoulder. Degenerative changes in the rotator cuff result from many factors. These factors include: decreased vascularity, age, shape of the acromion, repetitive trauma, scapular instability, and muscular weakness. …
