Rapid Subduction Of Organic Matter By Maldanid Polychaetes On The North Carolina Slope, L. Levin, N. Blair, D. Demaster, G. Plaia, W. Fornes, C. Martin, C. Thomas
Journal of Marine Research
In situ tracer experiments conducted on the North Carolina continental slope reveal that tube-building worms (Polychaeta: Maldanidae) can, without ingestion, rapidly subduct freshly deposited, algal carbon (13C-labeled diatoms) and inorganic materials (slope sediment and glass beads) to depths of 10 cm or more in the sediment column. Transport over 1.5 days appears to be nonselective but spatially patchy, creating localized, deep hotspots. As a result of this transport, relatively fresh organic matter becomes available soon after deposition to deep-dwelling microbes and other infauna, and both aerobic and anaerobic processes may be enhanced. Comparison of tracer subduction with estimates …

Digestive Environments Of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Guts: Enzymes, Surfactants And Dissolved Organic Matter, Lawrence M. Mayer, Linda L. Schick, Robert F. L. Self, Peter A. Jumars, Robert H. Findlay, Zhen Chen, Stephen Sampson
Journal of Marine Research
Hydrolytic enzyme activity, surfactancy, and dissolved organic matter in the digestive lumens of 19 benthic echinoderm and polychaete species were examined, using consistent and quantifiable methods. Enzyme activities were compared with those of extracellular enzymes from ambient sediments. Enzyme activities ranged over five orders of magnitude, with averages decreasing in the order polychaetes > echinoderms > sediment. Highest activities in animals were usually associated with the fluid phase in midgut sections, with posteriorward decreases indicating little export to the external environment. At some phyletic levels, activity correlated inversely with animal size. Hydrolase patterns reflected food type; for example, high lipase:protease ratios in …

Leafy Spurge - A Review, Sharon A. Clay, Chad M. Scholes
Leafy Spurge - A Review, Sharon A. Clay, Chad M. Scholes
Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications
Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.) is a perennial herbaceous weed that infests millions of acres of range and pasture in the northern Great Plains. It outcompetes grasses and lowers land productivity because cattle will not graze infested areas even if spurge makes up only 10% of the vegetative biomass. This presentation will cover the history, taxonomy, and phenology of leafy spurge. A discussion of chemical, mechanical, and biocontrol techniques that aid in leafy spurge management will also be included.

Dietary Intakes From Rural, Community-Based Elderly As A Determinant Of Food Availability, Kelli Jo Hall
Dietary Intakes From Rural, Community-Based Elderly As A Determinant Of Food Availability, Kelli Jo Hall
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The fact that people are living longer has heightened awareness of the elderly and many of their special needs. Due to this trend, experts have begun to more closely investigate caloric and nutrient needs of the elderly as well as factors that may alter dietary intake. Forty-two older persons in Lincoln County, West Virginia agreed to participate in research designed to explore the relationship between dietary intake and food availability among rural, community-based elderly. Participants completed a 38 item telephone questionnaire which provided information on demographics, grocery shopping habits, and dietary intakes. A second survey addressed food availability at all …
Effects Of Creatine Supplementation On Muscular Strength And Power Development In Well-Trained Football Players, Josef D. Mcquain
Effects Of Creatine Supplementation On Muscular Strength And Power Development In Well-Trained Football Players, Josef D. Mcquain
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of creatine supplementation on strength and power performance in well-trained football players. Twenty-one subjects were randomly assigned to three treatment groups: 1) creatine monohydrate, 2) creatine monohydrate+dextrose, or 3) placebo utilizing a double-blind design. Prior to assignment, subjects were matched according to lean body mass. After a five day loading dose, a maintenance dose was administered for 12 days. Test protocols included three anaerobic work bouts: l) two 30 s Wingate bike tests interspersed with five minutes recovery were used to ascertain relative and absolute power, 2) two 100 yard …
Relationship Of Resting And Submaximal Cardiovascular Measures To Vo[2]Max In Untrained Children, Thomas A. Cappaert
Relationship Of Resting And Submaximal Cardiovascular Measures To Vo[2]Max In Untrained Children, Thomas A. Cappaert
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Participation by children in organized sport continues to increase. A 1994 survey of 10,000 households by the National Sporting Goods Association (1994) found that approximately 40,000 children between the ages of 7-17 years participate in an organized sport or recreational activity annually. In the realm of organized sports, especially endurance activities, there continues to be interest in how cardiovascular fitness is attained and how it can be maximized. Measurement of cardiovascular fitness is an important piece to that puzzle.
The most common and most descriptive measure for children and adults, is the maximal oxygen uptake or max (Astrand & Rodahl, …
Evidence For Cholinergic Inhibitory And Serotonergic Excitatory Neuromuscular Transmission In The Heart Of The Bivalve Mercenaria Mercenaria, Kiyoaki Kuwasawa, Robert A. Hill
Evidence For Cholinergic Inhibitory And Serotonergic Excitatory Neuromuscular Transmission In The Heart Of The Bivalve Mercenaria Mercenaria, Kiyoaki Kuwasawa, Robert A. Hill
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The heart of Mercenaria mercenaria is innervated bilaterally at the atria. A pair of cardiac nerves arise as a branch of the cerebro-visceral connective and run to the posterior end of the junction between each atrium and its efferent branchial vessel. Innervation evidently spreads over the heart, since both inhibitory and excitatory junctional potentials (IJPs and EJPs) can be recorded from the atria, the atrio-ventricular (AV) valve or the ventricle.
The cardiac nerves contain inhibitory and excitatory axons. Neural stimulation can cause increases in the frequency or amplitude of beating, depending on the strength and frequency of stimulation. Electrical stimulation …

Growth Of Vibrio Anguillarum In Salmon Intestinal Mucus, T. Garcia, K. Otto, S. Kjelleberg, David R. Nelson
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
The physiological changes of Vibrio anguillarum in response to growth in salmon intestinal mucus were investigated. Growth, survival, and changes in protein expression during growth in media supplemented with mucus were compared to growth and starvation in the identical media without mucus. V. anguillarum exhibited a rapid decline in CFU following growth in mucus as the sole carbon source. No such decline was observed in Luria broth with a 2% NaCl concentration, in glucose-minimal broth (3M), or during starvation in a carbon-, nitrogen-, and phosphorus-free salt solution (NSS). The changes in protein expression during growth in mucus were examined by …
