Constraints To Adoption Of Appropriate Breast Feeding Practices In A Squatter Settlement In Karachi, Pakistan, S H. Badruddin, S N. Inam, S Ramzanali, K Hendricks
Section of Internal Medicine
Appropriate breast feeding practices (ABFP) are important for successful lactation. Constraints to adoption of ABFP by mothers in a squatter settlement in Karachi, Pakistan are reported. One hundred and two mother-infant pairs were followed from birth to 16 weeks of age. Eighty-seven infants received prelacteal feeds of honey as a quasi-religious ritual, 16 received ghutti for "cleansing of stomach", other prelacteal feeds were given as substitutes for breast feeding. Twenty nine mothers initiated breast feeding within 4 hours of birth. Supplemental water was given to 53 infants; major reasons being mothers' perception of thirst and diarrhoea in the infant. Supplemental …
Unshackling Black Motherhood, Dorothy E. Roberts
Unshackling Black Motherhood, Dorothy E. Roberts
Michigan Law Review
When stories about the prosecutions of women for using drugs during pregnancy first appeared in newspapers in 1989, I immediately suspected that most of the defendants were Black women. Charging someone with a crime for giving birth to a baby seemed to fit into the legacy of devaluing Black mothers. I was so sure of this intuition that I embarked on my first major law review article based on the premise that the prosecutions perpetuated Black women's subordination. My hunch turned out to be right: a memorandum prepared by the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project documented cases brought against pregnant women …
Balancing Work And Family In Cooperative Extension: History, Effective Programs, And Future Directions, Robert J. Fetsch, Mary S. Kennington
Balancing Work And Family In Cooperative Extension: History, Effective Programs, And Future Directions, Robert J. Fetsch, Mary S. Kennington
Journal of Extension
Balancing family and work is a continuous struggle for many Cooperative Extension faculty. In 1981 ECOP formulated a position paper recommending that managers critically examine policies and practices and their effects on the family life of Extension employees. Research findings are reported on Extension Agents' stress levels and their effects on family life from six states. Program effects are reported from four different workshops in three states. Components of effective programs are described. To reduce Extension faculty's stress and strain levels, modify organizational policies and management strategies and support faculty who take proactive steps to balance their work and family.

Evaluating Evaluation -- What We've Learned, K Chapman-Novakofski, Ls Boeckner, R Canton, Cd Clark
Journal of Extension
Impact evaluation will be an important part of establishing program accountability within future Extension systems. Telephone interviews with Extension field staff and nutrition specialists who participated in field testing evaluation instruments highlight the benefits and barriers of evaluation processes. Perceived importance of general program evaluation processes are reported. Points to consider for the implementation of effective evaluation process are presented.
Profitability Plus Environmental Sustainability Equals Modified Relay Intercropping, Steven C. Prochaska
Profitability Plus Environmental Sustainability Equals Modified Relay Intercropping, Steven C. Prochaska
Journal of Extension
To address the issues of farm profitability and environmental protection, a modified relay intercropping (MRI) system has been studied. In this system, soybeans are planted into wheat at or past the heading stage of growth. A modified relay intercropping system can effectively utilize farm labor, time and equipment, while at the same time reducing herbicide usage in the soybean crop. A descriptive study was conducted to measure the effects of variable wheat nitrogen fertilizer rates on soybean yield. The two year soybean yield in the MRI system average was 33.9 bushels per acre. There were significant differences in soybean yield …

Instrument Development For Low Literacy Audiences: Assessing Extension Program Personnel Teaching Effectiveness, Laryssa Lackman, Ruben D. Nieto, Rosemary Gliem
Journal of Extension
Performance evaluation plays an important role in providing feedback for self improvement and in assisting administrators with personnel decisions. The main purpose of the study was to develop an appropriate evaluation instrument to be used by low literacy audiences for the assessment of Extension program personnel teaching effectiveness. After content and face validity checks, a nine-item instrument using a pictorial scale and an open-ended statement were selected for the instrument. Items selected reflected six dimensions of teaching: learning, enthusiasm, organization, group interaction, individual rapport, and overall. The low literacy instrument confirms Extension administration's views of serving a wide variety of …

The use of doubly labeled water (DLW) to measure energy expenditure is subject to error if the background abundance of the oxygen and hydrogen isotope tracers changes during the test period. This study evaluated the accuracy and precision of different methods by which such background isotope changes can be corrected, including a modified method that allows prediction of the baseline that would be achieved if subjects were to consume water from a given source indefinitely. Subjects in this study were eight women (4 test subjects and 4 control subjects) who consumed for 28 days water enriched to resemble drinking water …

Size-Frequency Distribution Of Palaemonetes Pugio In Two New Jersey Estuaries And Predator-Prey Interactions With Fundulus Heterocolitus, Celine Santiago
Size-Frequency Distribution Of Palaemonetes Pugio In Two New Jersey Estuaries And Predator-Prey Interactions With Fundulus Heterocolitus, Celine Santiago
Theses
Predation by Fundulus heteroclitus is known to be an important factor regulating the abundance and size distribution of Palaemonetes pugio in the salt marsh habitat.
A preliminary study showed that P. pugio from a polluted estuary, Piles Creek, were relatively larger than those found in a more pristine estuary, Little Sheepshead Creek. Possible causes could be differences in competition, inherent environmental components, reproductive effort, or predation. To investigate the differences in size frequency, data on relative abundances of both species and size frequency distribution of P. pugio were collected for comparison from the two estuaries.
It was determined that P. …
