Defamation In An Age Of Political Correctness: Should A False Public Statement That A Person Is Gay Be Defamatory?, Patrice S. Arend
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This article reviews the important public policy decision that individuals should be free to protect their reputations from false and derogatory remarks. Most notably, the article explores the issues of whether a public statement that a person is gay is or should be defamatory, if it proves to be false. The author presents an overview of the problems presented to the various courts. The author then discusses the probable causes of actions and the most appropriate solution to defamation in an age of political correctness.

An Implementation Of A Three Tier Trader Service Utilizing Corba And Java Components To Assess The Viability Of The Object Web, Simon Holden
An Implementation Of A Three Tier Trader Service Utilizing Corba And Java Components To Assess The Viability Of The Object Web, Simon Holden
Master's Projects
The Internet has rapidly grown beyond its initial stage of development, from simple static forms, into an emerging technology that is suitable for utilization by commerce. The technology to support the increased user demand is also changing. Distributed Objects are the most recent attempt to address the complexities associated with this new paradigm.
The purpose of this report is to assess this new technology by implementing the look up” function of a three tier Trader service with CORBA as the middleware, with JavaBeans as the programming language and JDBC as back end database bridge. The results of this implementation are …
Signal Generator To Calibrate Read-Write Recording Head Testers, Jagdeep Buttar
Signal Generator To Calibrate Read-Write Recording Head Testers, Jagdeep Buttar
Master's Projects
In hard disk drives, a read write recording head is an essential component. Millions of recording heads are produced each year. Testing these heads on various testers is an imposing task. Read Write channels are emulated on these testers to test the functionality of these heads. The testers must be calibrated periodically, particularly in a production environment. This project focuses on improving this calibration process by developing a new calibration technique. An improved method of calibrating Peak Detection and Synchronous Channels used in testers is designed and verified.
The signal generator designed for calibrating Peak Detection Channel was fabricated into …
Tertiary Storage In Multimedia Systems: Staging Or Direct Access?, Hwee Hwa Pang
Tertiary Storage In Multimedia Systems: Staging Or Direct Access?, Hwee Hwa Pang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Multimedia applications that are required to manipulate large collections of objects are becoming increasingly common. Moreover, the size of multimedia objects, which are already huge, are getting even bigger as the resolution of output devices improve. As a result, many multimedia storage systems are not likely to be able to keep all of their objects disk-resident. Instead, a majority of the less popular objects have to be off-loaded to tertiary storage to keep costs down. The speed at which objects can be accessed from tertiary storage is thus an important consideration. In this paper, we propose an adaptive data retrieval …
Alarmist Decisions With Divergent Risk Information, W. Kip Viscusi
Alarmist Decisions With Divergent Risk Information, W. Kip Viscusi
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Receipt of multiple sources of risk information ideally should foster sounder decisions under uncertainty. This paper’s original survey results for environmental risks suggest that the learning process is reasonable in many respects, but it does not accord with a rational Bayesian learning model. Divergent risk assessments from different sources produce extreme violations of rationality, as there is inordinate weight on the high risk assessment. This alarmist reaction holds for both government and industry information sources. This phenomenon may account for the commonly observed phenomenon of public overreaction to highly publicized risks.

Waterfall Lasers, Lee W. Casperson
Waterfall Lasers, Lee W. Casperson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Laser concepts can be applied to a broad range of physical phenomena. One of the closest parallels occurs with the fluttering oscillations that are sometimes observed in the falling sheets of water associated with fountains, dams, and natural waterfalls. In many respects these fluid feedback oscillations are similar to the electromagnetic modes of typical lasers, and recognition of this similarity led to the interpretation of the waterfall behavior. Gain profiles for the waterfall oscillations are developed, and the relationship of experimental waterfall data to the laser-like models is considered in detail.

An Educational Exhibit Of Two Graphic Designers: William Golden / Will Burtin, Linda Blake
Theses
The Retrospective Exhibit, a thesis project, documented the professional graphic design work of two pioneers in the industry. Will Burtin and William Golden. William Golden was Art Director of CBS (Columbia Broadcasting System) Television and creator of the CBS 'eye'. Will Burtin was an exhibition designer, a graphic designer and a lecturer. The thesis project was an educational display that reflected the historical graphic design accomplishments of both men. Numerous trade ads from Golden's work at CBS highlighted his expansive corporate identification program. Golden created a multimedia promotion unlike any prior to its development. Television was a new medium that …
Values, Affect And Risk Perception, Kurt Neuwirth, Sharon Dunwoody, Robert J. Griffin
Values, Affect And Risk Perception, Kurt Neuwirth, Sharon Dunwoody, Robert J. Griffin
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
Three pilot studies provided data exploring the roles of values, threats to these selfsame values and emotions in the perception of risk. Results indicate that judgements about risk are associated with a wide variety of values and perceived threats to values. The findings also revealed that the negative emotions such as sadness, worry, anger, disgust, helplessness and uncertainty were significantly related to risk perception. The authors' discussion advances the view that the range of topics considered appropriate to risk communication can be extended to the area of public opinion and rhetorical studies.

Radiation Imaging Operators Applied To The Detection Of Velocity And Density Contrast Boundaries, Md. Ishfaqur Raza, Richard E. Dubroff, James L. Drewniak
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A procedure for imaging interfaces formed by simultaneous density and velocity contrasts in acoustic media is described. The procedure is based on the properties of radiation imaging operators - a class of linear differential operators parametrically dependent on the acoustic properties of the media. An example of this procedure is demonstrated through the use of numerical simulation. Results, in the form of interface images, are shown, assuming the bulk acoustic characteristics (velocity and density) on both sides of the interface are known.
An Investigation Of The Heat Transfer Suppression Mechanisms In The Pool Boiling Of Aqueous Solutions Of Ethylene Glycol, Lucas Alves
Theses
An experimental investigation of the heat transfer behavior of a binary system, whose constituents are water and ethylene glycol, is undertaken. The objectives of this study are: 1 . To conduct a comprehensive literature search. 2. To examine the effect of certain parameters on the heat transfer suppression mechanisms of binary systems. 3 . To gather new data for boiling heat transfer of aqueous ethylene glycol solutions, over the entire range of concentrations. The dilute concentration range, with solutions of 0.0 - 0. 1 mass fractions, is given special attention in clarifying what are the effects of surface tension, mass …

Fractionally Sampled Decorrelating Detectors For Time-Varying Rayleigh Fading Cdma Channels, Huaping Liu
Fractionally Sampled Decorrelating Detectors For Time-Varying Rayleigh Fading Cdma Channels, Huaping Liu
Dissertations
In this dissertation, we propose novel decorrelating multiuser detectors in DSCDMA time-varying frequency-nonselective and frequency-selective fading channels and analyze their performance. We address the common shortcomings of existing multiuser detectors in a mobile environment, such as detector complexity and the error floor. An analytical approach is employed almost exclusively and Monte Carlo simulation is used to confirm the theoretical results. Practical channel models, such as Jakes' and Markovian, are adopted in the numerical examples.
The proposed detectors are of the decorrelating type and utilize fractional sampling to simultaneously achieve two goals: (1) the novel realization of a decorrelator with lower …
