The Development Of On-Line Microwave Digestion Techniques For Environmental Matrices, Kathryn Judith Lamble Jan 1997

The Development Of On-Line Microwave Digestion Techniques For Environmental Matrices, Kathryn Judith Lamble

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

As a consequence of our advancing knowledge of the impact of trace elements in environmental and biological systems there is increasing need for quantitative analytical techniques to accurately, sensitively and rapidly determine a wide range of trace elements in environmental samples. Since their emergence in 1975 microwave digestion techniques have revolutionised conventional approaches to sample digestion and have rapidly gained widespread acceptance as an effective method of sample preparation. This thesis describes how a number of novel on-line microwave digestion techniques have been developed, characterised and applied to the digestion of a range of environmental matrices which have proved time …

Privatisation, Rural Railways And Community Development, Theresa Maria Lowndes Jan 1997

Privatisation, Rural Railways And Community Development, Theresa Maria Lowndes

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This thesis examines two separate, but interrelated, issues, namely rail privatisation and rural dependency on the availability of rail transport. The thesis was based on the proposition that rural accessibility permits the development and sustainability of the social and economic lives of a community and that this interrelationship is currently threatened by rail privatisation and the associated risks of line closures or service cutbacks. To test this proposition a thorough investigation into the theory and practice of privatisation was completed, together with a comprehensive survey of the travel arrangements of people living in rural communities served by branch line railways. …

Recession As An Agent In The Restructuring Of Tourist Accommodation, Andrew John Clegg Jan 1997

Recession As An Agent In The Restructuring Of Tourist Accommodation, Andrew John Clegg

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Academic research into economic restructuring in the tourist industry has solely focused on the strategies adopted by large chain hotel companies and little attention has been paid to the strategies adopted by small scale, family-run accommodation establishments. This sector is particularly significant for traditional resort areas in the UK. For example, in Torbay, Devon (as in most seaside resorts), there is an absence of large chain hotels and small-scale accommodation establishment pl ay an integral role in the local tourism economy.Consequently, an understanding of the competitive pressures and restructuring strategies in this sector is essential in maintaining the long-term health …

Protecting Intellectual Property Rights Through Civil Litigation: A Symposium, Eric Easton Jan 1997

Protecting Intellectual Property Rights Through Civil Litigation: A Symposium, Eric Easton

All Faculty Scholarship

On September 30, 1996, nineteen lawyers, law professors and judges from the People's Republic of China began a six-week program of classroom study, practical experience, and scholarly exchange that focused on the American system of protecting intellectual property rights through civil litigation. The program was funded by a $107,000 grant from the United States Information Agency's Office of Citizen Exchange Programs to the University of Baltimore's Center for International and Comparative Law, in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development.

The initial, two-week phase of the program included field trips to the U.S. Copyright Office, the Patent …

Two Wrongs Mock A Right: Overcoming The Cohen Maledicta That Bar First Amendment Protection For Newsgathering, Eric Easton Jan 1997

Two Wrongs Mock A Right: Overcoming The Cohen Maledicta That Bar First Amendment Protection For Newsgathering, Eric Easton

All Faculty Scholarship

In Cohen v. Cowles Media Co., Justice Byron R. White wrote that the First Amendment offers no protection from the enforcement of "generally applicable laws" against newsgatherers and that First Amendment protection applies only to information that has been "lawfully acquired." This Article shows that these doctrines are not only false, but have already done serious damage to First Amendment interests. It surveys lower court decisions from around the country to demonstrate the doctrines' pernicious influence, then it evaluates alternative solutions to the problem. The article concludes that the most effective, if least likely, solution would be a rule that …

Consumer Sovereignty: A Unified Theory Of Antitrust And Consumer Protection Law, Neil W. Averitt, Robert H. Lande Jan 1997

Consumer Sovereignty: A Unified Theory Of Antitrust And Consumer Protection Law, Neil W. Averitt, Robert H. Lande

All Faculty Scholarship

This article is about the relationship between antitrust and consumer protection law. Its purpose is to define each area of law, to delineate the boundary between them, to show how they interact with each other, and to show how they ultimately support one another as the two component parts of an overarching unity: effective consumer choice (also called consumer sovereignty).

Consumer choice only is effective when two fundamental conditions are present. There must be a range of consumer options made possible through competition, and consumers must be able to choose effectively among these options. The antitrust laws are intended to …

Factors Affecting Collision & Grounding Losses In The Uk Fishing Fleet, Malcolm Findlay Jan 1997

Factors Affecting Collision & Grounding Losses In The Uk Fishing Fleet, Malcolm Findlay

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Examination of the literature reveals a paucity of dedicated research into collisions and groundings involving UK fishing vessels. The aim of this research was to provide answers to fundamental questions regarding the factors that contribute to fishing vessel traffic losses. Data for this study were gathered from a broad range of sources and an eclectic range of techniques employed in their analysis. The recent development of the UK fishing fleet and the pattern of losses from all causes is investigated for the period 1975 to 1994. Fishing vessel collision and grounding losses are then set in relative perspective by comparison …

Performing The Self : An Examination Of The Relationships Between Concepts Of Identity And Performance, Matthew Thomas Wellings Jan 1997

Performing The Self : An Examination Of The Relationships Between Concepts Of Identity And Performance, Matthew Thomas Wellings

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis sets out to examine the idea that self-identity can be coherently viewed as a performance event. If such a proposition is supportable, it would seem to argue for attention to be paid to the nature of the activity of performing as a means to better understanding the processes of human identity. Beginning with an analysis of an early example of such a theoretical position, this thesis examines some of the central issues involved in viewing the self as performative. The agenda dictating the direction of this analysis can be summarised as an effort to provide a model of …

Predicament Of The New Primary Teacher : Educating Teachers As Intellectuals In Changing Times, Roderick Mackenzie Jan 1997

Predicament Of The New Primary Teacher : Educating Teachers As Intellectuals In Changing Times, Roderick Mackenzie

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

This thesis is based on a case study of the predicament of new primary teachers in a time of rapid and multiple change. It examines the proposal that emerging teachers should be supported as intellectuals in responding to the inherited collision of education policy and practice within postmodernity. Action research methodology was employed to investigate a small scale attempt to support student teachers as intellectuals in their final period of the BEd. Some participants were followed into the first year of teaching, using an ethnographic and autoethnographic methodology to evaluate and elaborate the initial proposal. The study shows that emerging …

The Use Of Multiple Intelligences In Designing Curriculum For An Early Childhood Classroom, Dawn Osterhaus Jan 1997

The Use Of Multiple Intelligences In Designing Curriculum For An Early Childhood Classroom, Dawn Osterhaus

Graduate Research Papers

Early childhood curriculum implementation is not yet well represented in the literature pertaining to multiple intelligences. For purposes of this project, the literature pertaining to early childhood classrooms where the seven multiple intelligences were implemented was reviewed, and a preschool implementing the seven multiple intelligences has been written. This curriculum makes a difference in how the authors' lesson plans are designed and classroom activities are chosen. The resulting curriculum may also make a difference in how other early childhood educators set up their overall curriculum, and provides an easy-to-follow resource guide of potential use when planning individual units and activities.

User Disorientation Related To Instructional Hypermedia Programs, Sandy S. Sutterer Jan 1997

User Disorientation Related To Instructional Hypermedia Programs, Sandy S. Sutterer

Graduate Research Papers

Instructional hypennedia programs seem to define the current trend in today's educational institutions. These multimedia programs, most often found on CD-Roms (compact disks, which can be read, but not written to), make use of the computer to coordinate and present text, graphics, audio, animation, and video within a single document. They are classified as "hype1media" because of the way in which the various elements can be accessed. Rather than being limited to a linear presentation, in which each element is dispensed in a predetermined sequence to all users, Yang and Moore (1995) define hypermedia as a "non-linear association of information …

Summing Up: Questions And Answers On The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, David W. Hafemeister Jan 1997

Summing Up: Questions And Answers On The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, David W. Hafemeister

Physics

My experiences with the ratification of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, the Threshold Test Ban Treaty, and the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Treaty have led me to conclude that presenting technical issues early in the process greatly reduces their politicization during the ratification end game. This chapter summarizes the important issues that will be raised during the debate on ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. It uses a compact question and answer format to cover the following topics: I. Nuclear Proliferation, II. Nuclear Arms Control, III. Warhead Reliability and Yield for National Security, IV. Warhead Safety, V. Verification, …

Reassessing Fault Factors In No-Fault Divorce, Peter N. Swisher Jan 1997

Reassessing Fault Factors In No-Fault Divorce, Peter N. Swisher

Law Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is not to "turn back the clock" through the rehabilitation of fault grounds as the sole means for securing a divorce in America. Rather, this article will explore the ways in which fault-based factors, when applied to serious or egregious marital misconduct that significantly contributes to the marital breakdown, may still be utilized in order to bring about enhanced social, economic, and legal protection to spouses on divorce, while concurrently establishing a greater sense of responsibility and accountability in marital relationships.
