Legal Aspects Of The Internet, Etienne Pichat

LLM Theses and Essays

This thesis will explain the legal aspects of the Internet so that users who wish to protect their rights and avoid liability can log on with a better understanding of the rules of the game. This work will be divided into two chapters. The first chapter will focus on existing legal regulation of the Internet to advise users on which law is relevant, and how to solve problems of conflicts of laws in the cyberworld. It will answer the question of whether cyberspace is, or not, a "no laws land", and what kind of regulation would better fit the cyberworld. …

Junior High School Students' Perception Of The Messages Conveyed Through The Lyrics Of Rock Music, Steven M. Russey

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to discover whether or not the accompaniment of a lyric sheet while listening to rock music would aid a student's correct identification of the message conveyed by that song. Participants included one 7th and one 8th grade class of "gifted" students (N = 62). Other elements examined involved students' judgment of the messages as negative or positive, as well as the tonality of each song as pleasant or unpleasant and how these judgments related to correct or incorrect identification of the messages. Results indicated that there was no statistically significant difference regarding correct or …

New Objective Classification System For Nuclear Opacification, Donald D. Duncan, O. B. Shukla, Sheila West, Oliver D. Schein Jan 1997

New Objective Classification System For Nuclear Opacification, Donald D. Duncan, O. B. Shukla, Sheila West, Oliver D. Schein

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We have developed an autonomous objective classification scheme for degree of nuclear opacification. The algorithm was developed by using a series of color 35-mm slides acquired with a Topcon photo slit-lamp microscope and use of standard camera settings. The photographs were digitized, and first, and second-order gray-level statistics were extracted from within circular regions of the nucleus. Classifications of severity were performed by using these features as input to a neural network. Training versus classification performance was tested by using photographs of different eyes, and test/retest classification reproducibility was evaluated by using paired photographs of the same eyes. We demonstrate …

Crime, Politics, And Race (Symposium: Justice And The Criminal Justice Process), Samuel R. Gross Jan 1997

Crime, Politics, And Race (Symposium: Justice And The Criminal Justice Process), Samuel R. Gross

Articles

The biggest problem with the criminal justice system is that too many crimes are committed-too many rapes, too many murders, too many robberies; too much violence that inflicts an untold amount of suffering and destruction on too many people. If that seems obvious, what follows should be equally obvious. The most important step to take to solve the problems of the criminal justice system is to reduce the number of crimes that are committed: to prevent crimes. The best thing we can do to help the victims of crime is to keep them from becoming victims in the first place. …

Protecting Child Sex-Crime Victims: How Public Opinion And Political Expediency Threaten Civil Liberties, Michelle Johnson Jan 1997

Protecting Child Sex-Crime Victims: How Public Opinion And Political Expediency Threaten Civil Liberties, Michelle Johnson

Seattle University Law Review

This Article looks at the enactment and subsequent nullification of a 1992 Washington law that state legislators intended to protect the privacy of child sex-crime victims. The Article uses this statute to illustrate that through the enactment of such statutes, politicians may sacrifice constitutional rights, such as freedom of the press and access to government proceedings, in order to achieve short-term political gains. Therefore, because it is somewhat less affected by elections and the political process, the judiciary is often the only branch of government responsible for protecting civil liberties. In the case of Washington's law on access to child …

Bridging The Analogy Gap: The Internet, The Printing Press And Freedom Of Speech, Jonathan Wallace, Michael Green

Seattle University Law Review

The Supreme Court will bring the highest degree of clarity to the Internet freedom of speech debate if, in ACLU v. Reno, it sets forth the operative metaphor for freedom of speech and applies the metaphor in conjunction with an appropriate analogy for the technology.Part I of this Article discusses judicial decision-making tools with an emphasis on the use of analogy and the importance of applying legal precedents in a manner which is consistent and logical. Part I also discusses the use of metaphor in judicial decisionmaking and illustrates how operative metaphors for free speech have served to provide …

From The Classroom... Culture, Communication, And Media: So What?, Marsha Clowers

Iowa Journal of Communication

While many contemporary communication and media textbooks give some attention to issues of diversity, they are not being adequately explored in classrooms. This article offers activities, readings, films, and assignments designed to heighten students' awareness of diversity on their campuses, in their future work environments, in the media images they consume and, just as important, within themselves. The discussed strategies can be used in a variety of courses and are especially helpful when used with students that are largely unaware of the experiences of traditionally under represented groups.
