Optical Studies Of Ge Islanding On Si(111), P. D. Persans, P. W. Deelman, K. L. Stokes, L. J. Schowalter, A. Byrne, T. Thundat

Physics Faculty Publications

We report an experimental study of the optical properties of island layers resulting from molecular beam epitaxial deposition of Ge on Si(111) substrates. The combination of electroreflectance spectroscopy of the E1 transition and Raman scattering allows us to separately determine the strain and composition of the islands. For deposition at 500 °C a deposited layer of 1.36 nm of Ge assembles into 80 nm diameter islands 11 nm thick. The average Si impurity content in the islands is 2.5% while the average in-plane strain is 0.5%. Both strain and Si impurity content in islands decrease with increasing Ge deposition

Acting Upon Immigrant Acts: On Asian American Cultural Politics By Lisa Lowe- A Review Colloquy, Margaret Chon Jan 1997

Acting Upon Immigrant Acts: On Asian American Cultural Politics By Lisa Lowe- A Review Colloquy, Margaret Chon

Faculty Articles

How might a literature professor converse with a law professor about law? Selecting what she thinks are some of the more extraordinary excerpts from Professor Lowe's seven densely and finely-crafted essays, Professor Margaret Chon meditates on each from the perspective of critical race theory and other legally grounded paradigms. Rather than narrate a linear critique of Professor Lowe's book, Professor Chon tries to construct a partial, if artificial, colloquy. By doing this, the reader can sample the richness of Lowe's text, while gauging Professor Chon’s reactions. With this form, Professor Chon hopes to emulate what Professor Lowe simultaneously analyzes and …

Radical Plural Democracy And The Internet, Margaret Chon Jan 1997

Radical Plural Democracy And The Internet, Margaret Chon

Faculty Articles

By examining the consequences that particular social practices on the Internet have in physical space, this essay attempts to re-pivot the democratic discourse of the Internet so as to include Chantal Mouffe's vision of a radical and plural democracy: one that accounts for missing material markers, one that encourages the proliferation of different democratic struggles, one that acknowledges that "[a]ll inequities existing in our society are now at issue."

The Fourteenth Amendment And Title Ix: A Solution To Peer Sexual Harassment Comment., Connie C. Flores Jan 1997

The Fourteenth Amendment And Title Ix: A Solution To Peer Sexual Harassment Comment., Connie C. Flores

St. Mary's Law Journal

Despite the high occurrence of sexual harassment in schools, many school officials, who are aware of the abuse, do nothing to prevent it. Yet, some officials are beginning to recognize peer abuse is not acceptable due to the detrimental effects on students. As a result, many schools have implemented successful programs to prevent peer harassment. Furthermore, when schools have not responded adequately to the problem, student victims have turned to the courts, suing schools for failure to ensure an environment free from discrimination. Although victims have had little success in taking these cases to court, constitutional and statutory provisions exist …

Blue And Gray Skies: The National Securities Markets Improvement Act Of 1996 Makes The Case For Uniformity In State Securities Law, Kenneth I. Denos Jan 1997

Blue And Gray Skies: The National Securities Markets Improvement Act Of 1996 Makes The Case For Uniformity In State Securities Law, Kenneth I. Denos

Utah Law Review

On October 11, 1996, President Clinton signed into law the National Securities Markets Improvement Act of 1996 ("NSMIA), a compromise version of Senate Bill 1815 and House Resolution 3005. Spearheaded by Senator Alfonse D'Amato (R-New York), the legislation is intended, among other things, to delineate the sphere in which federal and state securities regulators may operate by amending various federal securities laws. In what appears to be a precursor of future securities reform bills, the NSMIA preempts state securities law in certain areas long burdened by duplicative regulation by both federal and state governments. The NSMIA enjoyed widespread bipartisan support, …

Environmental Variables, Including Pollutants, Affecting Living Benthonic Foraminiferida, Catherine Jane Manley Jan 1997

Environmental Variables, Including Pollutants, Affecting Living Benthonic Foraminiferida, Catherine Jane Manley

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Studies of living benthonic foraminiferal assemblages carried out by marine biologists are comparatively rare. This study of the changes in foraminiferal assemblages from three subtidal sites near Plymouth, U.K., has been carried out with the intention of determining the importance of various abiotic and biotic variables to the foraminiferal communities studied using statistical correlation. Temperature and salinity at depth and particle size characteristics together with organic content, bacterial abundance and type, and other meiofauna present were assessed monthly with samples taken for foraminiferal content, and for seasonal diatom analysis. Deformed specimens were very rare in the examined samples of natural …

The Innervation And Physiology Of The Cardiac Tissue In Squid, Maria Pernilla Odblom Jan 1997

The Innervation And Physiology Of The Cardiac Tissue In Squid, Maria Pernilla Odblom

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Cephalopods have one of the most sophisticated cardiovascular systems among the invertebrates; they have an enclosed high pressure blood system, characterised by a double circulation, with one main systemic heart and two gill hearts. The cephalopod cardiac tissues are basically myogenic, but there is evidence for both nervous and hormonal regulation of most parts of the cardiovascular system, although the details of the control systems remain unknown. This study investigated the physiology and innervation of the cardiac tissues of the squid Alloteuthis subulata, Loligo forbesii and L vulgaris. Histological staining techniques established that the cardiac organs in squid are innervated …

Teachers' Positive And Negative Effects On Student Effort, Jeanne Turner Jan 1997

Teachers' Positive And Negative Effects On Student Effort, Jeanne Turner

Graduate Research Papers

This paper reviews the historical development of concepts regarding students' perceptions of achievement and self-efficacy, examines the literature on teachers' perspectives on ability and effort and the various teaching methods used to increase student achievement in the classroom, and evaluates the effects these methods actually have on student effort. The definition of student effort used in this paper is similar to Schlecty's (1994) definition of student "engagement," which is: a student's persistence in completing a task despite challenges and/or obstacles. This paper, however, will not focus on the related areas of gender bias, socioeconomic variances, and ethnic differences that exist …

Potential Technology Application In English Instruction In The People's Republic Of China, Ping Gao Jan 1997

Potential Technology Application In English Instruction In The People's Republic Of China, Ping Gao

Graduate Research Papers

The primary purpose of this paper is to present a vision of potential technology application as an effective teaching aid for English instruction in the People's Republic of China (hereafter referred to as China). In order to provide a clear picture of why technology should be applied in English teaching situations in China, major factors influencing the current English teaching methodologies – grammar translation and audiolingual method – have been analyzed. A theoretical analysis of modern Western teaching pedagogy, the communicative approach, has been explored to offer an in-depth understanding of foreign language learning and teaching processes. The close relationship …

A Multiuniversity Internet Course Collaboration Using Case Methodology : The University Of Northern Iowa Experience, Richard Gorman

Graduate Research Papers

One professor at the University of Northern Iowa decided to use a unique approach to teach her section of Elementary Curriculum. While five or six sections were taught in the traditional manner, one section, taught by Dr. Bonnie Johnson, and assisted by Dr. Dale Johnson, used an Internet-based, case methodology approach. In the Johnson class, students addressed issues that are facing teachers today; using technology, and communicating with students and faculty on other campuses. To accomplish this, students participated in an Internet course collaboration centered at the University of Virginia.

In evaluating the Johnson course, three questions were addressed. They …

Technology Training In Preservice Education Programs : A Review Of The Literature, Catherine A. Gersema

Graduate Research Papers

Education is radically changing with the dawn of the information age, where the ability to access, analyze, and manipulate information is a basic survival skill. To become more technologically adept, elementary and secondary schools must provide technical training to their students. However, trained students are the result of trained professionals. Recognizing the burgeoning need to provide skilled professionals, institutions of teacher education are integrating educational technology programs in preservice education.

This review of the literature reports on technology implementation at teacher training institutions where educational technology is being infused into the preservice curriculum through adherence to guidelines from ISTE and …

How To Build And Maintain A Strong Technology Program, Brian Horn

Graduate Research Papers

This paper will deal with the issues of developing and maintaining an educational technology program, and explain the creation of a technology program from its beginnings to a strong, but never final, state. This paper will also give ideas on the seldom-thought-about things all schools should know about technology and its implementation in the schools. We will attempt to answer the question: How do schools put together a good technology program, keep it strong and prepare for the future in educational technology?

Moving Towards A Language Arts Program Extended Across The Curriculum, Amy M. Kortemeyer Jan 1997

Moving Towards A Language Arts Program Extended Across The Curriculum, Amy M. Kortemeyer

Graduate Research Papers

A literature-based program;integrates oral and written language activity with other areas of the curriculum. Therefore, the curriculum is centered around real ideas, relevant issues, and problem solving. As a result; children have opportunities to experiment with language that can lead to higher levels of competencies (Goodman, 1986; Smith, 1994).

As teachers plan units in social studies and the sciences, they make note of relevant language activities. These activities can be teacher-directed or presented in learning centers (Harms & Lettow, 1992).
