Empire Forgotten: The United States's Colonization Of Puerto Rico, Ediberto Román
Empire Forgotten: The United States's Colonization Of Puerto Rico, Ediberto Román
Faculty Publications
This Article tells a story of two countries: the first, a world power through its noble proclamations concerning human rights, led the charge for the recognition of a people's right to choose their political and socio-economic future; the second, because of its domination by the first, has been unable to have its people choose their political and socio-economic future. 10 In analyzing this relationship, this Article demonstrates how the United States, by denouncing imperialism while at the same time quietly enjoying its benefits, resembles the "colonizer who refuses."

Kinetic Vs. Thermodynamic Control In The Dehydration Of 2-Methylcyclopentanol, Thomas Poon, Bradford Mundy, Jean Mcintyre
Kinetic Vs. Thermodynamic Control In The Dehydration Of 2-Methylcyclopentanol, Thomas Poon, Bradford Mundy, Jean Mcintyre
Articles
A two part organic laboratory experiment illustrating the Grignard reaction and the concept of kinetic versus thermodynamic control is described. The reaction of phenylmagnesium bromide with 2-methylcyclopentanone yileds an unsymmetrical benzylic alcohol which can be dehydrated using toluenesulfonic acid to give predominately the less substituted alkene. Application of heat to the reaction mixture over a period of two hours reverses the trend to give the more substituted alkene as the major product in 91% relative yield. The dehydration is monitored by GC/MS and the experiment can be performed using macro and microscale techniques.
The Dark Side Of The Moon The Status Of The Moon: Public Concepts And Private Enterprise, Frans G. Von Der Dunk
The Dark Side Of The Moon The Status Of The Moon: Public Concepts And Private Enterprise, Frans G. Von Der Dunk
Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law Program: Faculty Publications
Thirty years after the entry into force of the Outer Space Treaty most of its principles and concepts have not only found general acceptance as such, but also undergone considerable further development and elaboration. One of the most notable exceptions was the definition of the status of the moon (and other celestial bodies). This was partly due to the circumstances surrounding the drafting, conclusion, entry into force and then ultimate neglect by most states of the Moon Agreement, which was supposed to progressively develop and elaborate this issue. Now that an increasing interest may be discerned in returning to the …
Use Of Ultralight Aircraft For Introducing Migratory Crane Populations, Kent R. Clegg, James C. Lewis, David H. Ellis
Use Of Ultralight Aircraft For Introducing Migratory Crane Populations, Kent R. Clegg, James C. Lewis, David H. Ellis
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
Greater sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis tabida) were used as the research surrogate for whooping cranes (Grus americana) to determine if captive-reared cranes could be led by an ultralight aircraft (UL) along a migration route and if, after release on a wintering area, they would integrate with wild cranes and migrate north in spring to their natal area without assistance. In 1995, KRC raised 15 cranes to fledging and trained them to respond to his vocal imitation of a sandhill crane brood call. Chicks learned to follow him as he walked, drove an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) , …

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database
A 4.5 yr-old male white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) killed by a hunter during the 1994 firearm hunting season in northeastern Michigan (USA) had lesions suggestive of tuberculosis and was positive on culture for Mycobacterium bovis the causative agent for bovine tuberculosis. Subsequently, a survey of 354 hunter-harvested white-tailed deer for tuberculosis was conducted in this area from 15 November 1995 through 5 January 1996. Heads and/or lungs from deer were examined grossly and microscopically for lesions suggestive of bovine tuberculosis. Gross lesions suggestive of tuberculosis were seen in 15 deer. Tissues from 16 deer had acid-fast bacilli on …

The Case For A Permanent International Truth Commission, Michael P. Scharf
The Case For A Permanent International Truth Commission, Michael P. Scharf
Faculty Publications
This Article presents the case for the establishment of a permanent international truth commission as an adjunct to a permanent international criminal court or domestic prosecutions. Such a commission would be available to countries in the aftermath of situations involving grave humanitarian or human rights crimes. From the experience of the several international and national truth commissions established to date, this Article seeks to distill a framework for a pro- posed permanent international truth commission which would avoid the major problems that afflicted its predecessors. A draft statute for a permanent international truth commission is appended at the end of …
