Demonstrating Social Accountability In Medical Education, Brian Hennen Jan 1997

Demonstrating Social Accountability In Medical Education, Brian Hennen

Higher Education

The author considers the University of Toronto's Health, Illness and the Community course for undergraduate medical students, described in this issue by Wasylenki and associates (see pages 379 to 383). Social accountability in medical education demands a community orientation and hence an emphasis on outreach. Medical schools should expand their clinical service to the community, provide community-based residency placements and offer continuing medical education in rural and regional centres. Accountability also requires community involvement in planning and implementing research projects. Placing students in a community setting as part of the curriculum is praiseworthy, but it is not sufficient to ensure …

Her Honor: An Islamic Critique Of The Rape Laws Of Pakistan From A Woman-Sensitive Perspective, Asifa Quaraishi Jan 1997

Her Honor: An Islamic Critique Of The Rape Laws Of Pakistan From A Woman-Sensitive Perspective, Asifa Quaraishi

Michigan Journal of International Law

This article critiques the rape laws of Pakistan from an Islamic point of view which is careful to include women's perspectives in its analysis. Unlike much of what is popularly presented as traditional Islamic law, this woman-affirming Islamic approach will reveal the inherent gender-egalitarian nature of Islam, which is too often ignored by its academics, courts, and legislatures. This article will demonstrate how cultural patriarchy has instead colored the application of certain Islamic laws in places like Pakistan, resulting in the very injustice which the Quran so forcefully condemns.

Virtual Judgment Proofing: A Rejoinder, Lynn M. Lopucki Jan 1997

Virtual Judgment Proofing: A Rejoinder, Lynn M. Lopucki

UF Law Faculty Publications

This is a rejoinder by the author of The Death of Liability, 106 Yale L.J. 1 (1996). The rejoinder is to a reply by Professor James J. White to the original article. Corporate Judgment Proofing: A Response to Lynn LoPucki's The Death of Liability, 107 Yale L.J. 1363 (1998). In response to specific points made by White, LoPucki argues that the judgment proofing of large companies would not be visible in Compustat data because it is not accomplished through secured debt or leasing and because Compustat data is aggregated by corporate group. Contracting parties will permit debtors to judgment proof …

A Literature Review Of Alcohol Abuse And Dependence, Julie R. Vaughan Jan 1997

A Literature Review Of Alcohol Abuse And Dependence, Julie R. Vaughan

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Alcohol abuse and/or dependence poses significant risks to a person's health. The negative effects and consequences of alcohol abuse and/or dependence has been well documented in the literature. Many people who are either alcohol abusers or alcohol dependent are admitted to hospitals with neurological deficits, medical complications and traumatic injuries. Often times an etiology related to alcohol abuse is ignored.

This population may be referred to physical therapy for rehabilitation. Functional outcomes and compliance are often unsatisfactory with this population. A better understanding of alcohol abuse and/or dependence could help identify persons at risk and improve functional outcomes.

The purpose …

Televised Gender Roles In Children’S Media: Covert Messages, Gaye Leigh Green Jan 1997

Televised Gender Roles In Children’S Media: Covert Messages, Gaye Leigh Green

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Encountering stereotypes promulgated by media representations is a daily occurrence. Information perpetuated in the media continually influences how people view the world. Female gender roles portrayed in television, for example, have altered from the 1950s stay-at-home mother portrayed by Barbara Billingsley in Leave It To Beaver, to postmodern portrayals of independent actress/mothers such as Jane Seymour. The messages that such diverse personifications suggest of motherhood are equally disparate. While television once perpetuated images of mothers as in the home caregivers, this domestic characterization has evolved into moms who now venture actively into the world.

A Mountain Cultural Curriculum: Telling Our Story, Christine Bellengee Morris Jan 1997

A Mountain Cultural Curriculum: Telling Our Story, Christine Bellengee Morris

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Jim Wayne Miller, professor of English at Western Kentucky University, declared that school children in West Virginia have more exposure to other cultures than they do to their own. His concern was that, “Lack of knowledge about the area’s history helps perpetuate negative stereotypes about the region’s mountain people” (Associated Press, 1994). If the Mountain Culture, to which many of the students belong, is not reflected in the curriculum, their identity, voice, heritage, history, and arts are censored and the Mountain Cultural youth are rendered invisible in their own state. Results from a survey of three elementary schools located in …

Photography(S) And Cultural Invisibility: Symptoms And Strategies, Michael J. Emme Jan 1997

Photography(S) And Cultural Invisibility: Symptoms And Strategies, Michael J. Emme

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

What does it mean to be visible? We cross paths and we see each other. Simple. Why bother asking the question? The fact that artists and cultural theorists have for the past decade or more been energetically pursuing precisely this question of visibility is one of the dominant features of the visual arts today. At the heart of this collective inquiry is a concern to discover the social nature of both vision and pictures. This concern rises out of the almost common-sense realization that much of what we “know” about the world we know because of pictures and that despite …

Black Cowboys In The American West: A Historiographical Review, David Goldstein-Shirley Jan 1997

Black Cowboys In The American West: A Historiographical Review, David Goldstein-Shirley

Ethnic Studies Review

Few subjects in the ethnic experience of the United States are as fraught with mythology and misinformation as black cowboys. Although absent from most classic history texts of the American West, black cowboys probably constituted about a quarter of the working cowboys in the nineteenth century, although q uantitative data to establish a number are lacking. This essay reviews the historiography of black cowboys published during the last half-century, noting how much of it is marred either by glossing over the presence of black cowboys or by credulously repeating estimates of their numbers established by earlier work. The essay speculates …

The Japanese Product Liability Law: Sending A Pro-Consumer Tsunami Through Japan's Corporate And Judicial Worlds, Jason F. Cohen

Fordham International Law Journal

This note argues that Japan’s former product liability system deprived consumers of adequate protection against product defects. This note also argues that Japan’s changing economic and political conditions necessitated the introduction of strict liability. Part I examines the development of the Japanese legal system, traces the history of product liability in Japan, and discusses the structural and cultural barriers to pursuing product liability claims. Part I also explains the product liability legal theories in existence before the PL Law and discusses the twenty-year process in which Japan debated the prospects of passing this legislation. Part I concludes by discussing factors …

Gene Transcription And Chromosome Replication In Escherichia Coli, Ping Zhou, Joseph A. Bogan, Keven Welch, Samuel R. Pickett, Hsiu-Ju Wang, Arieh Zaritsky, Charles E. Helmstetter

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

Transcript levels of several Escherichia coli genes involved in chromosome replication and cell division were measured in dnaC2(Ts) mutants synchronized for chromosome replication by temperature shifts. Levels of transcripts from four of the genes, dam, nrdA, mukB, and seqA, were reduced at a certain stage during chromosome replication. The magnitudes of the decreases were similar to those reported previously for ftsQ and ftsZ (P. Zhou and C. E. Helmstetter, J. Bacteriol. 176:6100-6106, 1994) but considerably less than those seen with dnaA, gidA, and mioC (P. W. Theisen, J. E. Grimwade, A. C. Leonard, J. A. Bogan, and C. E. Helmstetter, …
