Patient-Focused Care: The Restructuring Of Healthcare, William E. Brown Jan 1997

Patient-Focused Care: The Restructuring Of Healthcare, William E. Brown

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of restructuring or redesigning the current healthcare delivery system. with a primary emphasis on the concept of patient-focused care. Patient-focused care is defined as the redesign of patient care so that hospital resources and personnel are organized around patients. rather than around various specialized departments.

An overview of the healthcare delivery system prior to 1980 pointed out that healthcare expenses were increasing at far too rapid a rate. The number of Americans without healthcare benefits was climbing and medical record management was out of control. Hospital information systems were obsolete and professional territorialism …

Farm Women And Work : Required But Not Recognised, Fiona M. Haslam-Mckenzie Jan 1997

Farm Women And Work : Required But Not Recognised, Fiona M. Haslam-Mckenzie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Across Australia, government sponsored Rural Women's Networks have been established to encourage rural women to look beyond their individual context and to identify as part of a much larger group of women, all with common concerns. These networks have encouraged women to view themselves as legitimate participants in a patriarchal society and to realise that the traditional male culture of farming is redundant. Fiona M. Haslam-McKenzie, a lecturer in the Faculty of Business at Edith Cowan University, reviews the recognition given to women on the farm.

Intersectionality And Positionality: Situating Women Of Color In The Affirmative Action Dialogue, Laura M. Padilla Jan 1997

Intersectionality And Positionality: Situating Women Of Color In The Affirmative Action Dialogue, Laura M. Padilla

Faculty Scholarship

This article explores the position of women of color in the affirmative action dialogue. Affirmative action has come under attack locally, statewide, and federally. During this same period, critical race feminists have brought into sharp relief how women of color are marginalized or erased in discourses over sex and gender, as well as over race and ethnicity. Despite these protests and warnings, the current debate over affirmative action continues this history of invisibility, perpetuating America's spoken and unspoken conceptions about where women of color belong. For example, most discussion of affirmative action focuses on race, more specifically on African-Americans. Some …

Will Boys Just Be Boyz N The Hood? African-American Directors Portray A Crumbling Justice System In Urban America, Justin P. Brooks Jan 1997

Will Boys Just Be Boyz N The Hood? African-American Directors Portray A Crumbling Justice System In Urban America, Justin P. Brooks

Faculty Scholarship

In the 1990s several African-American directors have explored issues of urban justice through stories of children growing up in urban America. Films such as Boyz N the Hood have brought vivid images of disenfranchised and violent neighborhoods and the obstacles involved in growing up in these neighborhoods. These films question whether the criminal justice system works in neighborhoods isolated from both the creation and the protections of the legal system, and where the rules of the criminal justice system sometimes collide with the rules of the neighborhood justice system.

An Artist's Privilege, Niels Schaumann Jan 1997

An Artist's Privilege, Niels Schaumann

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines visual art in light of the letter and the spirit of the Constitution's Copyright Clause and the Copyright Act of 1976 (“Act”) and concludes that artists should have the freedom to copy works, not only of popular culture, but of all kinds. In other words, people creating art should be permitted to copy anything and everything. This is not to suggest that copyright serves no purpose: destroying the copyright edifice merely to protect the ability of certain artists to create would be dangerous and foolhardy. Practical limitations on an artist's privilege to copy can be imposed to …

Foundation-Building For Western Hemispheric Integration, Frederick M. Abbott Jan 1997

Foundation-Building For Western Hemispheric Integration, Frederick M. Abbott

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The United States is embarked upon an ambitious program of western hemispheric economic integration about which its domestic body politic is decidedly ambivalent. The process in which the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was approved in 1993 re- vealed deep divisions between the major political parties and their various interest group constituencies concerning the appropriate scope of an economic integration agenda. The Mexican peso crisis that began in December 1994 provoked a deep crisis of confidence regarding Mexico's readiness to participate in a mature economic partnership with the United States and Canada. Subsequent revela- tions relating to corruption infecting …

Nitrogen Source Effects On The Growth And Development Of Burley Tobacco Transplants In The Float System, Robert C. Pearce, Gary K. Palmer Jan 1997

Nitrogen Source Effects On The Growth And Development Of Burley Tobacco Transplants In The Float System, Robert C. Pearce, Gary K. Palmer

Agronomy Notes

During the spring of 1996, many tobacco producers used a water soluble 20-10-20 fertilizer in their float beds, only to have to throw out the stunted sickly plants that resulted, and start over. The fertilizer that caused the problems turned out to have 100% of the nitrogen (N) as urea-N. It was hypothesized that the poor growth was related to with the conversion of the urea-N to other forms of N. There have been numerous other cases where producers using fertilizers high in urea-N or ammonium-N (NH4-N) have had problems with stunted plant growth. Further study of nitrogen transformations is …

The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In The Induction Of Interleukin-8 (Il-8) By Rhinovirus, Matthew Biagioli Jan 1997

The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In The Induction Of Interleukin-8 (Il-8) By Rhinovirus, Matthew Biagioli

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

There is a direct correlation between the severity of common cold symptoms and the concentration of IL-8 in nasal secretions from volunteers with experimental human rhinovirus (hRV) colds. Although these and other data are consistent with the hypothesis that IL-8 is a mediator of common cold symptoms, the mechanism by which IL-8 is elaborated in response to hRV challenge is not understood. This study examined the role of oxidative stress and NF-κB activation in hRV induced IL-8 elaboration. All studies were done in either a transformed respiratory epithelial cell line (Beas-2b) or human lung fibroblasts (MRC-5). Induction of oxidative stress …
