Sexuality And Related Social Skills Training: Meeting The Challenge For Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Caroline Mary Adkison Jan 1997

Sexuality And Related Social Skills Training: Meeting The Challenge For Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Caroline Mary Adkison

Theses Digitization Project

Historically, people with developmental disabilities were denied the right to live in and integrate with the society of individuals without disabilities. Landmark legislation and a societal shift over the past two decades, however, have made it possible for people with developmental disabilities to live and work in the communities in which they live.

The Development Of A Curriculum For Early Childhood Education, Leticia Espina Castor Jan 1997

The Development Of A Curriculum For Early Childhood Education, Leticia Espina Castor

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this project was to design a one-year curriculum for 3 to 5 year old low-income and minority children in the Pasadena and Glendale area, with the goal of child-initiated learning. The content of the curriculum will consist of a modification of the High/Scope program, consisting of an active learning program and using a plan-do-review sequence. The proposed early childhood curriculum relies heavily on active, child-initiated learning experiences during which children plan, or express their intentions, carry out their intentions in play experiences and then reflect on their accomplishments.

Assessment Of Cased-Borehole Seals Using An Ultrasonic Method, Nazli Yesiller, Craig H. Benson, Tuncer B. Edil, James Klima Jan 1997

Assessment Of Cased-Borehole Seals Using An Ultrasonic Method, Nazli Yesiller, Craig H. Benson, Tuncer B. Edil, James Klima

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Tests were conducted in Wisconsin from 1994 through 1996 in several boreholes using an ultrasonic method that was developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to assess the integrity of annular seals. Initially, three model boreholes simulating monitoring wells were installed to evaluate the effectiveness of the ultrasonic method. Different types of seals were placed around the casings and defects were purposely introduced in the seals to test the ultrasonic method. The ultrasonic method was effective for detecting the presence of different types of seals and defects and also the changes in the condition of seals with time. Then tests were …

Multimedia Technology As A Presentation And Archival Tool For Teaching History/Social Science, Patricia Weigel Amicone

Theses Digitization Project

This project was created to provide teachers with a model multimedia project that demonstrates the use of multimedia as both a presentation tool and an archival instrument. It provides teachers with a simple guide to help them teach students how to use multimedia as a productivity tool in the classroom. This outline gives a step by step format that guides teachers and students through the development and presentation process. In addition, an evaluation rubric is provided that offers teachers a concise means to monitor student learning.

Single-Frequency, Thin-Film-Tuned, 0.6w, Diode-Pumped Nd:Yvo4 Laser, Jan K. Jabcyński, Igor I. Peshko, Józef Firak

Physics and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Application of a metallic thin-film selector to the single-frequency oscillation of a diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. We show that a chromium thin-film selector with a thickness between 8 and 9 nm provides single-frequency output within a power range of 0.6W. Single-frequency operation, slow smooth turning, or chirping was realized by the output coupler movement with a piezoceramic transducer. Chuirping at a repetition rate of 0.5 kHz in the 0.5-10-GHz range was achieved. Physical and technical limitations caused by the wide-gain bandwidith, thermal effects, and mechanical vibrations of cavity elements are discussed.

The Best Of Both Worlds: Financing Software Filters For The Classroom And Avoiding First Amendment Liability, 16 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 659 (1998), Peter G. Drever Iii

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

As the Internet expands, educational institutions have become interested in the medium for the purpose of expanding learning opportunities. Information that may be objectionable to some members of the community, however, would then be available to children in schools with Internet access. Attempts to regulate the content of the Internet have yet to pass a First Amendment challenge. Concern over what children will be exposed to when the Internet is introduced in the classroom is currently being addressed by educators and legislators alike. The Communications Decency Act was the first to attempt to address the issue of Internet access in …

Fractals, Surface Roughness, And Fracture Toughness Of Dental Composite And Unfilled Resin Fracture Surfaces, James L. Drummond Jan 1997

Fractals, Surface Roughness, And Fracture Toughness Of Dental Composite And Unfilled Resin Fracture Surfaces, James L. Drummond

Cells and Materials

The intent of this project was to evaluate whether or not there exists a correlation between fractal dimension, surface roughness, and fracture toughness of an unfilled resin and a filled composite. The fracture surfaces of the unfilled resin and the filled composite were examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and a surface roughness measuring device. The specimens examined were aged in distilled water or air at 37°C for up to 12 months. Line scans of 1.4 µm for the atomic force microscope and 0.25 mm for the surface analyzer across the fracture surface were conducted on each specimen. Comparisons …

Bone Marrow Cell Colonization Of, And Extracellular Matrix Expression On, Biodegradable Polymers, C. E. Holy, M. S. Shoichet, J. E. Davies

Cells and Materials

Poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide)s (PLGAs) have been proposed as substrata for bone tissue engineering. In the experiments reported herein, we sought to identify the optimum lactide to glycolide ratio, from the series 85:15, 75:25, 50:50, or poly-(DL-lactide) (PLA), for the elaboration of bone matrix by cultured rat bone marrow cells (RBMC) on two-dimensional substrates. Having identified PLGA 75:25 as the optimum for bone matrix elaboration by RBMC, we produced three dimensional foams from this copolymer. For the two dimensional substrata, glass coverslips were spin-coated with one of the PLGAs, or PLA. Cultures were maintained for two weeks. We employed a new technique to …

Defining Auditor's Responsibilities, Joni J. Young Jan 1997

Defining Auditor's Responsibilities, Joni J. Young

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper explores the efforts of the audit profession to dominate definitions of their roles and responsibilities throughout the last two decades. The paper considers alternative definitions of these roles and responsibilities as forwarded by others and the justifications and defenses provided by auditors to legitimize their conceptions of these matters.
