The Relationship Among Sports Reporters, Coaches And Sports Information Directors Regarding Student-Athlete Interviews, Scott Ronaghan Jun 1997

The Relationship Among Sports Reporters, Coaches And Sports Information Directors Regarding Student-Athlete Interviews, Scott Ronaghan

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis sought to determine if sports information directors were preparing their student athletes for media interviews. The author surveyed SIDs and student athletes from 30 different ECAC institutions sponsoring men's basketball. Also surveyed were newspaper reporters who cover the respective schools. A major portion of the survey involved the amount of media training SIDs conduct for their student-athletes.

Two-thirds of the 18 SIDs said they trained their student athletes for interviews. The most common technique SIDs used was one-on-one meetings with the student athletes. Representing the team in a positive light was the most Common subject stressed to the …

Examination Of The Combustion Morphology Of Ziconium Carbide Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Brian R. Newbold Jun 1997

Examination Of The Combustion Morphology Of Ziconium Carbide Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Brian R. Newbold

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Calculation of viscous particle damping of acoustic combustion instability in solid propellant motors requires an understanding of the combustion behavior of added particles and oxides. A simple hydrogen/oxygen flame was used to ignite carefully sieved zirconium carbide particles which were impacted on slides at different levels below the burner.

Scanning electron microscopy revealed that zirconium carbide has a complex heterogeneous combustion morphology. Initially, particles are partly vitreous and crystalline with a complex surface area. Upon ignition, particles round, but soon wrinkle as zirconium oxide deposits on the surface. Such morphology information is useful to refine viscous damping calculations.

Microgravity Effects On Water Flow And Distribution In Unsaturated Porous Media, Scott B. Jones, Dani Or Jun 1997

Microgravity Effects On Water Flow And Distribution In Unsaturated Porous Media, Scott B. Jones, Dani Or

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Several aspects of the physical processes of liquid flow and distribution within partially saturated porous media are altered in the reduced gravity conditions (microgravity) of orbiting spacecraft. The objectives of this study were to simulate and test measured flow and distribution in porous media from a microgravity environment using conventional capillary flow theory. Two past microgravity experiments studying water supply and uptake in porous media took place on a U.S. space shuttle, titled ASC-1, and on the Russian space station Mir, titled Greenhouse-2. Data from microgravity and ground experiments were simulated using similar physical flow models by elimination of the …

Development Of A Full-Spectrum Raman Device For Detection Of Environmental Contaminants, David G. Smith Jun 1997

Development Of A Full-Spectrum Raman Device For Detection Of Environmental Contaminants, David G. Smith

Utah Space Grant Consortium

NASA needs sensors to accurately monitor the water and atmospheric quality in its space habitat. Concerns for health and safety necessitate the development of sensors to measure common atmospheric gas concentrations, as well as trace contaminants (low ppm or ppb), including both combustible and noncombustible gases. The University of Utah is developing an enhanced Raman monitoring system to detect airborne, environmental contaminants. We have collected laboratory data to benchmark current laser Raman technology for gas analysis, which provides a reference for future developments. The objective of this project was to design a prototype gas-phase monitor, incorporating new technology that would …

A Study Of The Presence Of Bias In Reporting On The Socially Sensitive Issue Of Abortion, Benjamin E. Martin Jun 1997

A Study Of The Presence Of Bias In Reporting On The Socially Sensitive Issue Of Abortion, Benjamin E. Martin

Theses and Dissertations

In a content analysis of news articles and a survey of newspaper editors, this study determined if bias in print media can be detected through the content of news writing.

For the content analysis, news articles dealing with abortion were taken from the New York Times and the Washington Post. The articles, which appeared between Oct. 5 and Nov. 5, 1996, are straight news stories and do not include editorial or opinion articles. Coders were given a series of ten questions to answer for each article. For the survey, editors in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania were surveyed …

Perceptions Of Teachers Toward Change In Rural North Dakota High Schools., Roy Michael Tapp Jun 1997

Perceptions Of Teachers Toward Change In Rural North Dakota High Schools., Roy Michael Tapp

Theses and Dissertations

Rural schools rarely seem to get attention from prestigious sections of the academic community, especially concerning the issues of research, change, and rural teachers. Change in any form must be promptly and positively addressed as to diminish negative influences in the school setting. This study's intentions were twofold: to examine the perceptions that rural North Dakota high school teachers have about the process of change and to assess the extent to which the background factors of teachers contributes to these perceptions. For the purpose of this study, 162 teachers' responses to 14 items in the section of Intentional changes in the …

Implementation Of A Conflict Mediation Program In An Elementary School, Ruth Ann Moreno Belland Jun 1997

Implementation Of A Conflict Mediation Program In An Elementary School, Ruth Ann Moreno Belland

Theses and Graduate Projects

Schools are looking at how violence in the school contributes to students' stress levels and how it interferes with the academic abilities and performance of students. If schools are to be orderly and peaceful places in which high quality education can take place, students must learn to manage conflicts constructively. Studies show that conflict mediation plays a role in creating an environment where students regulate their own behavior in regards to conflict in school. This research study surveyed students about their attitudes and opinions towards conflict mediation at Beaver Lake Elementary School. This study also evaluated whether staff to student …

The Effects Of Print Advertising Campaigns On Consumers' Attitudes Towards Physician Primary Care Practices Affiliated With Jefferson Health System, Maryann Lobianco Jun 1997

The Effects Of Print Advertising Campaigns On Consumers' Attitudes Towards Physician Primary Care Practices Affiliated With Jefferson Health System, Maryann Lobianco

Theses and Dissertations

Due to managed care, the recent, rapid changes in healthcare forced hospitals to form health systems by joining with other hospitals and individual physician practices. As these health systems form, the competition for patients increases as does the need to keep consumers abreast of the changes within the forming health systems.

As a result, both health systems and physician practices launched advertising campaigns to reach these consumers. These campaigns must be tested for their effectiveness.

Two major healthcare competitors, Jefferson Health System and Main Line Health System, recently affiliated and formed Great Valley Health, which is a physician primary care …

Vcu Voice (1997-06-09)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
