Biology Faculty Works
Plasmids were constructed in which DNA damage-inducible promoters recA, uvrA, and alkA from Escherichia coli were fused to the Vibrio fischeri luxCDABE operon. Introduction of these plasmids into E. coli allowed the detection of a dose-dependent response to DNA-damaging agents, such as mitomycin and UV irradiation. Bioluminescence was measured in real time over extended periods. The fusion of the recA promoter to luxCDABE showed the most dramatic and sensitive responses. lexA dependence of the bioluminescent SOS response was demonstrated, confirming that this biosensor's reports were transmitted by the expected regulatory circuitry. Comparisons were made between luxCDABE and lacZ fusions to …

Monte Carlo Study Of The Square-Lattice Annealed Ising Model On Percolating Clusters, P. D. Scholten, Miron Kaufman
Physics Faculty Publications
Simulations of an Ising q-state Pods model which is equivalent to the Ising model on annealed percolation clusters are used to determine the phase diagram of the model in two dimensions. Three topologically different phase diagrams are obtained: (i) for q=2, there are two critical Ising lines meeting at T=0 at the four-state Potts critical point; (ii) for 24, the Ising:critical line intersects a Line of first-order transitions at a critical end point.

Patent Term Extension Of Pharmaceuticals In Japan: So You Say You Want To Rush That Generic Drug To Market In Japan . . . Good Luck!, William T. Christiansen Ii
Washington International Law Journal
With the passage of the Drug Price Competition Act of 1984 in the United States, the recent German Supreme Court decision allowing for experimental use of patented pharmaceuticals, and indirectly through the adoption of the Supplemental Protection Certificate in Europe, Japan seems to be the lone large pharmaceutical market which does not allow in some way for the experimental use of patented drugs to gain regulatory approval for a generic equivalent. Japanese generic pharmaceutical manufacturers had, until recently, operated under the assumption that the testing of a generic equivalent to a patented drug to gain regulatory approval was allowable as …

How Will Lawyering And Mediation Practices Transform Each Other?, John M. Lande
How Will Lawyering And Mediation Practices Transform Each Other?, John M. Lande
Faculty Publications
This article sketches out some aspects of both lawyering and mediation practice that may be affected by development of a litimediation culture. Part II examines the growth of the private market for mediation and an accompanying specialization of mediation practice. These changes seem likely to require mediators to develop market niches with identifiable characteristics of their mediation practices. Simultaneously, lawyers, as regular buyers of mediation services, will be expected to recognize and make decisions based on significant distinctions between mediation providers.

The Impact Of Intranets On College And University Public Relations Professionals, Daniel Murphy
The Impact Of Intranets On College And University Public Relations Professionals, Daniel Murphy
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to determine the impact of intranets with regard to the future job responsibilities and functions of public relations professionals in the field of higher education.
The hypothesis of this paper was that as more and more colleges and universities begin embracing intranets as a communication tool, the issue of information management will arise. The question of who or what department will be responsible for the information that is placed on an educational institution's intranet will be consistent and problematic.
College and university public relations professionals need to be aware of the problems, opportunities, changes …

The Thatcher Government In Saskatchewan And The Revival Of Metis Nationalism, 1964-71, James M. Pitsula
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The 1960s was a significant decade in the history of the relationship between the government of Saskatchewan and Aboriginal peoples. Premier Ross Thatcher, who led the Liberal party to victory in the April 1964 provincial election, had a strong personal interest in the plight of Indians and Metis, and his government undertook a number of initiatives intended to improve their living conditions. At the same time, Indians and Metis themselves experienced a political awakening and became more assertive. One might have expected many positive achievements flowing from this combination of a well-intentioned government and an energized Aboriginal community. In fact, …
