Net Cost: How Much Do Students Really Pay For College?, Jacqueline E. King, Kenneth E. Redd
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Increasingly, the media, parents and students, and policy-makers are asking how much students must pay to attend college after financial aid is taken into account. We present four ways to calculate net cost and we discuss the merits and drawbacks of each net cost calculation. The results suggest that college remains affordable for most students.

White Shadows In The Darkness: Representations Of Polynesian Women In Early Cinema, Margaret Jolly
White Shadows In The Darkness: Representations Of Polynesian Women In Early Cinema, Margaret Jolly
Pacific Studies
This article considers representations of Polynesian women in two early Hollywood films: Moana (1926) and Tabu (1931). It ponders the tensions not just between the cinematic visions of Robert Flaherty and F. W. Murnau, but between ethnographic recuperations and romantic celebrations of Polynesian women, in the light of de Lauretis’s contentions (in Technologies of Gender, 1987) that gendered identities are neither fixed nor immutable, but shifting and fluid effects.

Not So Nice Colored Girls: A View Of Tracey Moffatt’S Nice Coloured Girls, Caroline Vercoe
Pacific Studies
Nice Coloured Girls is Tracey Moffatt’s first film. Produced in 1987, this seventeen-minute film describes a tradition that has been passed down from her grandmother’s and great-grandmother’s generation—that of “picking up Captain.” Moffatt explains “since colonisation ‘picking up Captain’ has been a way for Aboriginal women to survive off white men.” Rather than creating new and empowered Aboriginal heroines for the 1990s, Moffatt chooses to site her characters within a colonial continuum. Her tradition begins with postcolonial contact and it is clearly formed by cross-cultural experiences. This essay focuses on the narrative structure of Nice Coloured Girls and discusses the …

The purpose of this study was to analyze African American portrayals in televised advertisements over a sixday period in November 1995. A total of 799 advertisements were analyzed, including 205 that depicted at least one African American actor. Content analysis was used to describe the following, with respect to African American actors: age, gender, day and time of portrayal, occupational role, and products and services advertised. Comparisons were also made between frequencies of actors of different races and amount of time these actors appeared. When compared with previous studies of African American television portrayals, many improvements were observed as well …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This study was designed to test the use of CD-ROM storybook programs' effects on preschool aged children's emergent literacy. 73 four-year-old children, divided into three study groups (experimental, control and well-read-to control) all enrolled in a Head Start program were given the opportunity to use CD-ROM storybooks during their free-choice time for approximately eight weeks. At the end of the trial period, the experimental group was compared with the control group and with their well-read-to peers. Results indicated that CD-ROM storybook programs may have a significant effect on the emergent reading skills of those children who are not as well-read-to …
