Masks, Davya Brody Aug 1997

Masks, Davya Brody

Theses

'Masks' is a body of work which explores the concept of mask in a variety of ways. Masks have been around since prehistoric times. Their use and development has a rich visual and cultural history, "masks' draws from this history both for inspiration and for direction. The other concept of mask investigated in this body of work, is mask-as-metaphor. The word "mask" does not simply mean an object which covers one's face. It also implies blocking something out, covering something up or hiding behind something. The mask of a building, body armor, the way we want things to be seen, …

Multiple Representation For Understanding Data Structures, Biffah Hancies, Venky Shankararaman, Jose Munoz Aug 1997

Multiple Representation For Understanding Data Structures, Biffah Hancies, Venky Shankararaman, Jose Munoz

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper an approach to enhance the learning of abstract computing concepts by novice students is presented. This approach is based on effective use of multiple visual representations, and it was applied within the domain of linear data structures: array, stack, queue and linked list. A prototype computer-based instructional system called MRUDS (Multiple Representation for Understanding Data Structures) was developed and evaluated. It was found from the evaluation that the three presentation modules namely, analogy, representation and algorithm contributed to the students' learning process, each contributing to and reinforcing the effect of the others.

Geophysical Characterization Of A Jp-4 (Lnapl) Contaminated Site At The Wurtsmith, Air Force Base, Oscoda, Michigan, Kristina C. Sprietzer Aug 1997

Geophysical Characterization Of A Jp-4 (Lnapl) Contaminated Site At The Wurtsmith, Air Force Base, Oscoda, Michigan, Kristina C. Sprietzer

Masters Theses

The detection of hydrocarbon contamination in the subsurface using geophysical techniques has been based on the known physical properties of high electrical resistivities (ρa) (low conductivities). However, geophysical field investigations at uncontrolled spill sites yield measurements of low resistivity (high conductivity). The purpose of this study is to test that in the natural environment some hydrocarbon spills (in the case of LNAPLs), can exhibit changes with time due to biodegradation, from electrically resistive to conductive. Since time is an important factor, this hypothesis was tested at a site where the time when a hydrocarbon release occurred is known and where …

Flying Universities: Educational Movements In Poland 1882-1905 And 1977-1981, A Socio-Historical Analysis, Gregory A. Lukasik Aug 1997

Flying Universities: Educational Movements In Poland 1882-1905 And 1977-1981, A Socio-Historical Analysis, Gregory A. Lukasik

Masters Theses

In Poland in 1977, a group of intellectuals formed an independent educational enterprise under the name "Flying University." Interestingly, the original "Flying University" was organized by a group of radical professors nearly a century earlier, at a time when the Polish state disappeared from the political map of Europe. I was interested in seeing whether the two were the same, as their common name would suggest, or if they differed in any respect. I attempted to answer this question by focusing on the so-called universities' memberships, ideologies, and objectives.

I have followed the method of interpretive historical sociology (Skocpol, 1979) …

Geographic Information Systems In High School Geography Education: A Feasibility Study, C. Sonia Wardley Aug 1997

Geographic Information Systems In High School Geography Education: A Feasibility Study, C. Sonia Wardley

Masters Theses

This research focused on three aspects of the integration of GIS into the high school curriculum. Firstly, the investigation strove to demonstrate how GIS could enrich the high school geography curriculum in Michigan. Secondly, GIS software programs were evaluated for suitability using three techniques, and thirdly, the study area high schools were assessed for their technological capabilities relative to GIS.

The pedagogical and cognitive benefits of using GIS as a tool were established _ from the pertinent literature and the feasibility of incorporating GIS into the curriculum was examined with the reference to the Michigan geography content standards and benchmarks. …

Prostitutes And Prostitution In Late Medieval Barcelona, Jana L. Byars Aug 1997

Prostitutes And Prostitution In Late Medieval Barcelona, Jana L. Byars

Masters Theses

Prostitution was by the late Middle Ages a well established, legal, and regulated institution in Barcelona and indeed many European cities. After a discussion of modern scholarship in chapter one, I proceed to examine, with original, unedited archival materials, the civic and ecclesiastical position on the prostitute, procurers and procuresses, and the institution of prostitution in Barcelona.

Through laws and ordinances, witness testimony, and expulsion records, I am able to demonstrate that the prostitute was a widely tolerated and common member of society. Despite the existence of legal brothels and the efforts of municipal authorities, illicit brothels flourished and independent …

Influence And Consensus In Group Decision Making Environment, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Byungcho Kim Aug 1997

Influence And Consensus In Group Decision Making Environment, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Byungcho Kim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this research, the effect of expert support on influence and consensus in group decision making is investigated. The results indicate that ESS support diminishes the group members' influence on the group judgment as well as the influence exerted by the most influential group member. On the other hand, explanations support provided by ESS increases consensus in group decision making.

Plausible Uses And Limitations Of Videoconferencing As A Tool For Achieving Technology Transfer, Edwin R. Hiel, David Herrington Aug 1997

Plausible Uses And Limitations Of Videoconferencing As A Tool For Achieving Technology Transfer, Edwin R. Hiel, David Herrington

Journal of Extension

An investigation into the utilization of videoconferencing at a Texas Agricultural Research and Experiment Station (Center) was conducted. End users of videoconferencing were identified and how well their interests were being served was ascertained. The purpose of this case study was to present the successes and limitations of videoconferencing as experienced during a three-and-a-half year period. Recommendations for improving the use of videoconferencing technology in the attainment of the Center's mission include support services and on-line scheduling.

A Tool For Towns In Transition, Flaxen Dl Conway, Pat Corcoran, Andy Duncan, Lynn Ketchum Aug 1997

A Tool For Towns In Transition, Flaxen Dl Conway, Pat Corcoran, Andy Duncan, Lynn Ketchum

Journal of Extension

Local, national, and global forces have unleashed a "torrent" of economic and social change in rural America. An educational package titled "Towns in Transition: Managing Change in Natural Resource-dependent Communities" provides tools that residents and leaders of those communities, including Extension agents, can use to cope. An award-winning video and companion study guide pinpoint transitional stages communities go through adapting to change. They offer strategies residents can employ during those stages. The video and study guide look at the real-life experiences of residents of three towns.

A Unified Green's Function Analysis Of Complicated Dfb Lasers, Jim D. Freeze, Michael A. Jensen, Richard H. Selfridge Aug 1997

A Unified Green's Function Analysis Of Complicated Dfb Lasers, Jim D. Freeze, Michael A. Jensen, Richard H. Selfridge

Faculty Publications

An efficient full-wave analysis technique for one-dimensional optical domains, known as the recursive Green's function method (RGFM), is presented for evaluation of distributed feedback (DFB) laser cavities with arbitrary material profiles. The method first constructs the Green's function of an inhomogeneous domain and subsequently uses Green's theorem to determine the laser optical field, lasing wavelength, and threshold gain. The technique is applied to investigate the performance of three DFB laser structures: a chirped-grating configuration, a modulated stripe width design, and a reduced duty cycle complex-coupled device. These structures are evaluated in terms of their single-mode lasing behavior and the uniformity …
