Cytochrome P450 And Organochlorine Contaminants In Black-Crowned Night-Herons From The Chesapeake Bay Region, Usa, Barnett A. Rattner, Mark J. Melancon, Clifford P. Rice, Walter Riley Jr., John D. Eisemann, Randy K. Hines

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Black-crowned night-heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) offspring were collected from a relatively uncontaminated coastal reference site (next to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, VA, USA) and two sites in the Chesapeake Bay watershed (Baltimore Harbor, MD and Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC, USA). Hepatic microsomal activities of benzyloxyresorufin-O-dealkylase and ethoxyresorufin-O-dealkylase were significantly elevated (up to sixfold and ninefold induction, respectively) in pipping embryos from the Baltimore Harbor colony compared to the reference site, whereas values in embryos from the Rock Creek Park colony were intermediate. Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides and metabolites in pipping embryos from both sites …

Multiple Outcomes In Health Services Research: Hypothesis Tests And Power, Donald C. Martin, Paula Diehr, Thomas D. Koepsell, Stephan D. Fihn Oct 1997

Multiple Outcomes In Health Services Research: Hypothesis Tests And Power, Donald C. Martin, Paula Diehr, Thomas D. Koepsell, Stephan D. Fihn

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Health services research often is directed towards making small improvements in a number of outcomes that reflect many aspects of the patient’s life rather than a large improvement in a single well defined outcome. A researcher might choose five scales to measure different aspects of treatment outcomes and not expect any large treatment differences on any single outcome measure. O’Brien (1984) has proposed a nonparametric statistical procedure which is particularly well suited to this type of problem and that can result in considerable increases in statistical power. This paper will briefly review O’Brien’s pooled rank method and develop power calculations. …

Assembly And Disassembly Of Dna Polymerase Holoenzyme, Daniel J. Sexton, Anthony J. Berdis, Stephen J. Benkovic Oct 1997

Assembly And Disassembly Of Dna Polymerase Holoenzyme, Daniel J. Sexton, Anthony J. Berdis, Stephen J. Benkovic

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The complex task of genomic replication requires a large collection of proteins properly assembled within the close confines of the replication fork. The mechanism and dynamics of holoenzyme assembly and disassembly have been investigated using steady state and pre-steady state methods as opposed to structural studies, primarily due to the intrinsic transient nature of these protein complexes during DNA replication. The key step in bacteriophage T4 holoenzyme assembly involves ATP hydrolysis, whereas disassembly is mediated by subunit dissociation of the clamp protein in an ATP-independent manner.

Two-Dimensional Spectral Analysis Of Mesospheric Airglow Image Data, F. J. Garcia, Michael J. Taylor, M. C. Kelley Oct 1997

Two-Dimensional Spectral Analysis Of Mesospheric Airglow Image Data, F. J. Garcia, Michael J. Taylor, M. C. Kelley

All Physics Faculty Publications

A technique to analyze short-period (<1 hour) gravity wave structure in all-sky images of the airglow emissions is described. The technique involves spatial calibration, star removal, geographic projection, regridding, and flat fielding of the data prior to the determination of the horizontal wave parameters (wavelength, velocity, and period), by use of standard two-dimensional Fourier analysis techniques. The method was developed to exploit the information that is now available with wide-field solid state imaging systems. This technique permits interactive and quantitative investigations of large, complex data sets. Such studies are important for investigating gravity wave characteristics, their interaction with the airglow emissions, and their geographic and seasonal variability. We study one event of this type here and present possible evidence of a nonlinear wave–wave interaction in the upper atmosphere.

The Salinity And Hydrology Of Cranbrook, R Ferdowsian, A T. Ryder Oct 1997

The Salinity And Hydrology Of Cranbrook, R Ferdowsian, A T. Ryder

Resource management technical reports

The study area covers the Cranbrook townsite and two catchments that affect it. The Cranbrook Town is located 85 km north-north-west of Albany and it has a population of 320 people (1190 in the Shire; ABS Census 1991).

Cranbrook is experiencing salinity problems. Saline groundwater levels are close to the soil surface and cause deterioration of buildings, roads, infrastructure, death of trees and scalding of land including the sporting ground.

The objective of this study was to define the present salinity status of the Cranbrook Town and develop management strategies to overcome or reduce the severity of salinity.
