The Temperature Dependent Modification Of The Ca2+ Release Mechanism Of Skeletal Muscle Sarcoplasmic Reticulum, Shawn Patrick Mullen
The Temperature Dependent Modification Of The Ca2+ Release Mechanism Of Skeletal Muscle Sarcoplasmic Reticulum, Shawn Patrick Mullen
Dissertations and Theses
The Ca2+ release protein/ryanodine receptor from skeletal muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum is shown to be modulated in a unique manner by small changes in temperature. Thiol oxidants and reducing agents modify channel function in a biphasic manner at 40° C, while at 34° C the channel exhibits only a monophasic behavior. Elevated temperature appears to expose a second set of reactive groups that, when either oxidized or reduced, alter function. Previous studies have focused on the properties of the release mechanism at or below 37° C. This study shows that at 40° C, which more reflects the body temperature of …

The Impact Of In-Home Parenting Skills Training On Parenting Effectiveness For Parents With Developmental Disabilities, Suzanne Flolid
The Impact Of In-Home Parenting Skills Training On Parenting Effectiveness For Parents With Developmental Disabilities, Suzanne Flolid
Theses and Graduate Projects
This study examines the success of Children's Service Society of Wisconsin's (CSSW's) in-home parenting skills training program for parents with developmental disabilities or considered low-functioning the referring county social service agency. The purpose of this program is to improve parenting effectiveness in an effort to maintain a safe and nurturing home environment for children in their parental home. Data were collected by administering a parenting effectiveness questionnaire to Children's Service Society of Wisconsin parenting skills trainers on a pre-test-post-test basis. The parenting skills trainers’ evaluated a parent's progress in the parent education program and reported the findings. The results suggested …

Hyperfine Splitting Of Low-Lying Heavy Baryons, Joseph Schechter, Masayasu Harada, Asif Qamar, Francesco Sannino, Herbert Weigel
Hyperfine Splitting Of Low-Lying Heavy Baryons, Joseph Schechter, Masayasu Harada, Asif Qamar, Francesco Sannino, Herbert Weigel
Physics - All Scholarship
We calculate the next-to-leading order contribution to the masses of the heavy baryons in the bound state approach for baryons containing a heavy quark. These 1/N_C corrections arise when states of good spin and isospin are generated from the background soliton of the light meson fields. Our study is motivated by the previously established result that light vector meson fields are required for this soliton in order to reasonably describe the spectrum of both the light and the heavy baryons. We note that the inclusion of light vector mesons significantly improves the agreement of the predicted hyperfine splitting with experiment. …
A Palynological Study Of Two Upland Bogs In The Gulf Coastal Plain, Alabama And Mississippi, Linda C. Pace
A Palynological Study Of Two Upland Bogs In The Gulf Coastal Plain, Alabama And Mississippi, Linda C. Pace
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Fewer Quaternary palynological studies have been conducted in the Gulf Coastal Plain of the southeastern United States than In the northern United States and Canada, resulting in major gaps in the pollen record of this region. The existing studies display discrepancies in the chronology of the pine rise, appearance of the modem climatic regime and vegetation, and timing of the Hypsithermal. In order to fill a gap in the paleoecological data network of the Gulf Coastal Plain, pollen analysis, charcoal analysis, and sediment stratigraphic techniques were used to reconstruct the last 6500 years of Sweetbay Bog, Mississippi, and Minamac Bog, …

Learning To See Analogies: A Connectionist Exploration, Douglas S. Blank
Learning To See Analogies: A Connectionist Exploration, Douglas S. Blank
Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship
The goal of this dissertation is to integrate learning and analogy-making. Although learning and analogy-making both have long histories as active areas of research in cognitive science, not enough attention has been given to the ways in which they may interact. To that end, this project focuses on developing a computer program, called Analogator, that learns to make analogies by seeing examples of many different analogy problems and their solutions. That is, it learns to make analogies by analogy. This approach stands in contrast to most existing computational models of analogy in which particular analogical mechanisms are assumed a priori …
Markovian Decision Control For Traffic Signal Systems, Xiao-Hua Yu, Allen R. Stubberud
Markovian Decision Control For Traffic Signal Systems, Xiao-Hua Yu, Allen R. Stubberud
Electrical Engineering
Setting signals at intersections to minimize the queue length and vehicle delay time is a key goal in traffic management. In this paper, a new control strategy for a signalized traffic intersection is developed by applying Markovian decision control theory. Statistical analysis of simulation results with different arrival rates indicate the excellent potential of this approach.

Audit Of The Department Of Energy's Contracts With Envirocare Of Utah, Inc., U.S. Department Of Energy, Office Of Inspector General, Office Of Audit Services, Eastern Regional Audit Office
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The Department of Energy (Department) is responsible for protecting human health and the environment by providing an effective and efficient system that treats, stores, and disposes of Departmental waste. The Department disposes of some of its waste at Envirocare of Utah, Inc., (Envirocare) a commercial treatment and disposal facility in Clive, Utah. The audit objective was to determine whether the Department and its contractors were using the most favorable rates available for the disposal of waste at Envirocare.
We found that the Department's contractors did not always use the most favorable rates available. Although volume discounts were available under Departmentwide …

Effective Elastic Thickness Of The Lithosphere Along The Easter Seamount Chain, Sarah E. Kruse, Zhengro J. Liu, David F. Naar, Robert A. Duncan
Geology Faculty Publications
Bathymetry and gravity data collected during Legs 5, 6, and 7 of the 1993 GLORIA Expedition and the recently released 2-min altimetry-derived global gravity grid are used to determine the effective elastic thickness of the lithosphere along the Easter Seamount Chain (ESC). Forward modeling, admittance, and coherence methods yield consistent results. With the exception of the eastern and western ends of the ESC the effective elastic thickness along the chain is ∼1–4 km. The thin elastic thickness for the majority of the ESC seamounts is compatible with a young seafloor age at the time of loading derived from new radiometric …

Bias And The Probability Of Generalization, Tony R. Martinez, D. Randall Wilson
Bias And The Probability Of Generalization, Tony R. Martinez, D. Randall Wilson
Faculty Publications
In order to be useful, a learning algorithm must be able to generalize well when faced with inputs not previously presented to the system. A bias is necessary for any generalization, and as shown by several researchers in recent years, no bias can lead to strictly better generalization than any other when summed over all possible functions or applications. This paper provides examples to illustrate this fact, but also explains how a bias or learning algorithm can be “better” than another in practice when the probability of the occurrence of functions is taken into account. It shows how domain knowledge …
Realities Of Cow Herd Genetics: Expectations And Impact, Don Marshall
Realities Of Cow Herd Genetics: Expectations And Impact, Don Marshall
Range Beef Cow Symposium
Beef cattle production in the United States remains largely a segmented rather than integrated industry. The needs and goals of the various segments of the production chain, with respect to production specification targets, are often different and sometimes conflicting. The resulting inadequate response of the industry to consumer needs has occurred at the same time as intensified competition from pork and poultry products, each of which has contributed to the decline of beef consumption.
Seedstock and commercial cow-calf producers represent particularly important links in the beef production chain because they have primary control of the genetics and produce the ''raw …

Breeding For Profit: An Introduction To Selection Index Concepts, M. D. Macneil, R. A. Nugent, W. M. Snelling
Range Beef Cow Symposium
The selection problem, that of choosing which individuals become parents, is inherent in all of beef production. This problem almost invariably involves evaluating animals on more than one trait and making compromises among traits to arrive at a final evaluation of each candidate for selection. In a capitalist society, profitability seems a logical unit of expression for that final evaluation. It is certainly the basis of evaluation intended in the original development of selection index in the animal sciences (Hazel and Lush, 1942; Hazel, 1943). Thus, a desire on the part of producers to maximize profitability is assumed throughout this …
Phase Structure Of Dynamical Triangulation Models In Three Dimensions, Simon Catterall, Ray L. Renken, John B. Kogut
Phase Structure Of Dynamical Triangulation Models In Three Dimensions, Simon Catterall, Ray L. Renken, John B. Kogut
Physics - All Scholarship
The dynamical triangulation model of three-dimensional quantum gravity is shown to have a line of transitions in an expanded phase diagram which includes a coupling mu to the order of the vertices. Monte Carlo renormalization group and finite size scaling techniques are used to locate and characterize this line. Our results indicate that for mu < mu1 ~ -1.0 the model is always in a crumpled phase independent of the value of the curvature coupling. For mu < 0 the results are in agreement with an approximate mean field treatment. We find evidence that this line corresponds to first order transitions extending to positive mu. However, the behavior appears to change for mu > mu2 ~ 2-4. The simplest scenario that is consistent with the data is the existence of a critical end point.

Stern-Gerlach Effect For Electron Beams, Herman Batelaan, Timothy J. Gay, J. J. Schwendiman
Stern-Gerlach Effect For Electron Beams, Herman Batelaan, Timothy J. Gay, J. J. Schwendiman
Timothy J. Gay Publications
The conflict between Bohr’s assertion that the magnetic moment of the electron cannot be measured with experiments based on the concept of classical trajectories, and the measurement of the magnetic moment of electrons in a modified Penning trap by Dehmelt et al. has led us to reevaluate other implications of Bohr’s assertion. We show that, contrary to the analysis of Bohr and Pauli, the assumption of classical trajectories in a Stern-Gerlach–like device can result in a high degree of spin separation for an electron beam. This effect may persist within a fully quantum-mechanical analysis. The magnetic fields considered are such …

Probing The Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding Of Water Molecules At The Ccl4/Water Interface In The Presence Of Charges Soluble Surfactant, D. E. Gragson, G. L. Richmond
Chemistry and Biochemistry
The molecular structure and hydrogen bonding of water molecules at the CCl4/water interface in the presence of a charged soluble surfactant has been explored in this study using vibrational sum frequency generation. By examining OH stretching modes that are highly sensitive to the local hydrogen bonding environment it is found that water molecules at the CCl4/water interface both in the presence and absence of a charged soluble surfactant are predominantly in a tetrahedral arrangement much like the structure ofice. Isotopic dilution studies have been employed to further characterize this icelike interfacial structure. Ablueshift ofapproximately120 cm-1 …
