Using the ZEUS detector at HERA, we have studied the reaction e+p → e+X for Q2 > 5000 GeV2 with a 20.1 pb-1 data sample collected during the years 1994 to 1996. For Q2 below 15000 GeV2, the data are in good agreement with Standard Model expectations. For Q2 > 35000 GeV2, two events are observed while 0.145 ± 0.013 events are expected. A statistical analysis of a large ensemble of simulated Standard Model experiments indicates that with probability 6.0%, an excess at least as unlikely as that observed would occur above some Q2 cut. For x > 0.55 and y > 0.25, four …

The reaction γ p → J/ψ p has been studied in ep interactions using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The cross section for elastic J/ψ photoproduction has been measured as a function of the photon-proton centre of mass energy W in the range 40 < W < 140 GeV at a median photon virtuality Q2 of 5 × 10-5 GeV2. The photoproduction cross section, σγp→J/ψp, is observed to rise steeply with W. A fit to the data presented in this paper to determine the parameter δ in the form σγp→J/ψp α Wδ yields the value δ = 0.92±0.14±0.10. The differential cross section dσ/d|t| is presented over the range |t| < 1.0 GeV2 where t is the square of the four-momentum exchanged at the proton vertex. dσ/d|t| falls exponentially with a slope parameter of 4.6 ± 0.4-0.6+0.4 GeV-2. The measured decay angular distributions are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. © Springer-Verlag 1997.

Diffractive dissociation of quasi-real photons at a photon-proton centre of mass energy of W ≈ 200 GeV is studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The process under consideration is γp → XN, where X is the diffractively dissociated photon system of mass MX and N is either a proton or a nucleonic system with mass MN < 2 GeV. The cross section for this process in the interval 3 < MX < 24 GeV relative to the total photoproduction cross section was measured to be σDpartial/σtot = 6.2 ± 0.2(stat) ± 1.4(syst)%. After extrapolating this result to the mass interval of mφ2 < MX2 < 0.05W2 and correcting it for proton dissociation, the fraction of the total cross section attributed to single diffractive photon dissociation, γp → Xp, is found to be σSD/σtot = 13.3 ± 0.5(stat) ± 3.6(syst)%. The mass spectrum of the dissociated photon system in the interval 8 < MX < 24 GeV can be described by the triple pomeron (IP IP IP) diagram with an effective pomeron intercept of αIP(0) = 1.12 ± 0.04(stat) ± 0.08(syst). The cross section for photon dissociation in the range 3 < MX < 8 GeV is significantly higher than that expected from the triple pomeron amplitude describing the region 8 < MX < 24 GeV. Assuming that this discrepancy is due to a pomeron-pomeron-reggeon (IP IP IR) term, its contribution to the diffractive cross section in the interval 3 < MX < 24 GeV is estimated to be fIP IP IR = 26 ± 3(stat) ± 12(syst)%. © Springer-Verlag 1997.

Vibration Analysis Of A Diesel Engine Mounted On A Test Chassis, Quan Le Jan 1997

Vibration Analysis Of A Diesel Engine Mounted On A Test Chassis, Quan Le

Theses

This paper presents vibration analyses performed on a diesel engine mounted on a test chassis. Four methods were used in analyzing engine vibrations on the test chassis. Static engine vibration analysis was an experimental method used to identify natural engine frequencies and modes shapes on the test chassis. In this technique, the non-running engine was excited by an external input force. A running engine analysis was used to determine engine resonance frequencies. In this analysis, the engine was excited by the running dynamics of its components. Engine speeds at those resonance frequencies were also determined in this test. Thirdly, lumped …

Authentic Learning In Interactive Multimedia Environments, Janice A. Herrington Jan 1997

Authentic Learning In Interactive Multimedia Environments, Janice A. Herrington

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The instructional technology community is in the midst of a philosophical shift from a behaviourist to a constructivist framework, a move that may begin to address the growing rift between formal school learning and real-life learning. One theory of learning which has the capacity to promote authentic learning is that of situated learning. The purpose of the study was to investigate the way students learn from an interactive multimedia package and learning environment based on a situated learning model. To do this, it was necessary to identify the critical characteristics of a situated learning model based on the extensive literature …

Secondary Arts Teachers' Perceptions Of Integrated Arts, Jeanette Giroud Jan 1997

Secondary Arts Teachers' Perceptions Of Integrated Arts, Jeanette Giroud

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

During the 1980s, research in the arts by Project Zero and Arts Propel revealed that in American schooling the areas of artistic intelligence and artistic education had been neglected. Gardner (1989) proposed a theory of multiple intelligences, suggesting that in addition to the linguistic and logical-mathematical forms, there are a number of distinct forms of intelligence that each individual may possess in varying degrees. The concept of multiple intelligences as opposed to "talent" in an art form offers the opportunity to view arts education in a new light. The original purpose of Arts Propel was to assess artistic potential in …

The Parents' Experience Of Living In The Hospital With Their Sick Infant : A Phenomenological Study, Anne Bourke Jan 1997

The Parents' Experience Of Living In The Hospital With Their Sick Infant : A Phenomenological Study, Anne Bourke

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the essential structure of the lived experience of what it was to be a resident parent on the ward in a public hospital with a sick infant. Many studies have highlighted both benefits and problems associated with the concept of parental participation in care. The role of the parents in hospital needs to be identified and expressed by both the parents and the nurses, in order to ellucidate the needs of parents who live in with their sick infant. Eight parents were interviewed regarding their experiences of "living in" the hospital …

Pre-Primary Children's Progress And The School Development Plan, Elizabeth A. Moulin Jan 1997

Pre-Primary Children's Progress And The School Development Plan, Elizabeth A. Moulin

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In recent years several policy changes have occurred in Western Australia regarding the provision of pre-compulsory education, particularly for children turning five. These changes have led to education of such children centred largely in full-time, on-site classes rather than in sessional, independent community centres, resulting in pre-primary education becoming mainstream school business. As such it is incorporated in the administrative, managerial and educational policies of the school including school development planning. The school development plan (SDP), a major tool of accountability within the school, provides a planning framework in selected priority areas in which methods of assessment and evaluation of …

An Approach To Display Layout Of Dynamic Windows, Nihar Trivedi Jan 1997

An Approach To Display Layout Of Dynamic Windows, Nihar Trivedi

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The development of windows based user interface has introduced a new dimension to the field of human computer interaction. Now a user is able to perform multiple tasks at a time, often switching from one task to another. However windows environment also imposes the burden of manual windows management on the user. Several studies have suggested that manual window management is an unproductive chore often resulting in clutter and confusion on the display screen. Therefore we need a automatic windows layout generator to free the user to perform other useful tasks. This thesis introduces SPORDAC {Shadow Propagation for Overlap Removal …

The Role Of Visual Art Works In The Theory And Practice Of Education With Reference To The Perceptions Of Western Australian Primary Visual Arts Specialist Teachers, Diana J. Brown

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The study examines the role of visual art works in primary education. This involves three levels of investigation. Level 1 examines the role of these art works in the main philosophies of visual arts education; Level 2 examines the role of visual art works in the Western Australia Art and Crqft K-7 Syllabus; and Level 3 examines visual arts primary specialist teachers' perceptions of the role of visual art works in their teaching programmes. The purpose is to establish the relationships between these three levels of analysis so as to contribute towards an explanation of the disparity between the high …

Teachers Of Mathematics Teach Mathematics Differently : A Case Study Of Two Teachers, Jennie Bickmore-Brand Jan 1997

Teachers Of Mathematics Teach Mathematics Differently : A Case Study Of Two Teachers, Jennie Bickmore-Brand

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis investigates the different approaches adopted by two teachers for teaching mathematical content at the upper primary level of education. Questions have been raised by researchers about the impact teachers' philosophical background may have on their perception of how mathematics should be taught. Similarly questions have been asked about the role of content in mathematics education in relation to the process of education. The two teachers held different beliefs about what they were doing when they were teaching mathematics and why they were teaching that way. Their methodological emphases were different; one could be described as being more learner-centred …

Year 7 Students' Understanding Of The Relationship Between Area And Perimeter, L. Marshall Jan 1997

Year 7 Students' Understanding Of The Relationship Between Area And Perimeter, L. Marshall

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The aim of this study was to determine Year 7 students' understanding of the relationship between area and perimeter. This is an important part of the measurement strand of mathematics. Two methods of collecting data were used: a multiple-choice pencil-and-paper test item; and clinical interviews with a class of Year 7 students. Two Perth metropolitan government primary schools allowed access for the research to take place: one was used for the trial of the test item with eleven students; the students at the other school were given the validated test item followed, one week later, by clinical interviews. Analysis of …

The Pedagogical Significance Of The Life And Work Of Artist Helen Grey-Smith, Gwen Phillips Jan 1997

The Pedagogical Significance Of The Life And Work Of Artist Helen Grey-Smith, Gwen Phillips

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Visual arts educational practice has been built upon a tradition which has neglected the work of women artists. The reasons for this are explored in the introduction to this research and in the literature review. The research will examine aspects of the lived experience and work of a Western Australian woman visual artist within a context of the traditional cultural and educational paradigms which influenced her development as a visual artist and which, it may be argued, continue to influence all visual artists. The participant in the research, Helen Grey Smith, has been a prominent member of the visual arts …

A Behavioural Checklist For The Measurement Of Self-Esteem In The Classroom, Dawn Metcalfe Jan 1997

A Behavioural Checklist For The Measurement Of Self-Esteem In The Classroom, Dawn Metcalfe

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The study sets out to develop a behavioural checklist for the measurement of self-esteem in the classroom. The importance of self-esteem to learning and adjustment to life's situation is well recognised by educational practitioners and theorists. This study examined the concept of self-esteem and the need for an objective instrument to measure the concept in children aged 6 to 12 years. The development of the instrument was in four phases and in every phase the input and feedback of classroom teachers was considered crucial The resulting instrument therefore comprises descriptions which are entirely teacher-generated. At several points in the process …

Investigating Conditions For Higher Order Thinking In Telematics Environments, Catherine Mcloughlin Jan 1997

Investigating Conditions For Higher Order Thinking In Telematics Environments, Catherine Mcloughlin

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Telematics, or audiographic conferencing, enables synchronous communication via telecommunications. A telephone link and computer communications allow students in distributed classrooms to participate in an extended, or virtual classroom. Telematics is widely used as an instructional medium for the delivery of curricula to students in rural and remote parts of Western Australia. Previous studies of learning meditated by this technology have shown limitations on the forms of interactivity, tasks and learner engagement. Students typically have been found to assume a passive role, often listening to a distant and invisible teacher, but not engaging in cognitively demanding tasks. The tendency for teachers …

Randomised Shuffle And Applied Misinformation: An Enhanced Model For Contact-Based Smart-Card Serial Data Transfer, Michael Collins Jan 1997

Randomised Shuffle And Applied Misinformation: An Enhanced Model For Contact-Based Smart-Card Serial Data Transfer, Michael Collins

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Contact-based smart-cards, which comply to the International Standard IS0-7816, communicate with their associated read/write machines via a single bi-directional serial link. This link is easy to monitor with inexpensive equipment and resources, enabling captured data to be removed for later examination. In many contact-based smart-cards the logical abilities are provided by eight-bit microcontroller units (MCU) which are slow at performing effective cryptographic functions. Consequently, for expediency, much data may be transferred in plain-text across the vulnerable communications link, further easing an eavesdropper's task. Practitioners in military communications protect transmitted information by varying a link's carrier frequency in an apparently random …

The Mathematical Modelling Of The Ross River Virus Transmission, Yoon-Hong Choi Jan 1997

The Mathematical Modelling Of The Ross River Virus Transmission, Yoon-Hong Choi

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Ross River virus is one of the most severe communicable diseases in Australia. During the 1995/96 outbreak of Ross River virus in south-western Australia, over 1 ,300 human cases were reported. Since the symptoms of the disease are sometimes too weak to be diagnosed, it is important to determine the number of humans who actually contracted the virus during outbreaks. To do this, several mathematical models with different hypotheses are constructed and analysed mathematically. The threshold mathematical conditions of these models suggest that as well as the size of the vector mosquito population, the population size and length of viraemia …

New Approaches To Column Compatibility Checking And Column-Based Input/Output Encoding For Curtis Decompositions Of Completely Or Incompletely Specified Switching Functions, Michael A. Burns Jan 1997

New Approaches To Column Compatibility Checking And Column-Based Input/Output Encoding For Curtis Decompositions Of Completely Or Incompletely Specified Switching Functions, Michael A. Burns

Dissertations and Theses

Cube calculus is an algebraic model used to process boolean functions. Cube calculus operations are widely used in logic optimization, logic synthesis, image processing and recognition, machine learning, and other applications which require massive logic operations.

The cube calculus operations can be carried out on general-purpose computers. Since these operations can involve several levels of nested loops, this approach has poor performance.

A cube calculus machine which has a special data path designed to speed up cube calculus operations is presented in this thesis. This c-qbe calculus machine can execute cube calculus operations 10 to 25 times faster than the …

Applying A Genetic Algorithm To Improve The Lower Bounds Of Multi-Color Ramsey Numbers, Shardul Rao Jan 1997

Applying A Genetic Algorithm To Improve The Lower Bounds Of Multi-Color Ramsey Numbers, Shardul Rao

Theses

Ramsey Theory studies conditions when a combinatorial object contains necessarily some smaller given objects. The role of Ramsey Numbers is to quantify some of the general existential theorems in Ramsey Theory. The objective of this thesis is to try to improve the lower bounds of Ramsey Numbers, in particular the bounds for multi-color graph Ramsey Numbers. Let Gi,G2,---,Gm be graphs on some n. R(G\,G2, ,Gm) denotes the m-color Ramsey number for graphs, avoiding G, in color i for 1 < i < m. Thus, to show R(G\, G2, . , Gm) > N, we need to find an edge coloring for a Kn graph using m colors (for N as large as possible) …

Factoring Integers Defined By Second And Third Order Recurrence Relations, Kirk Ocke Jan 1997

Factoring Integers Defined By Second And Third Order Recurrence Relations, Kirk Ocke

Theses

Factoring the first two-hundred and fifty Fibonacci numbers using just trial division would take an unreasonable amount of time. Instead the problem must be attacked using modern factorization algorithms. We look not only at the Fibonacci numbers, but also at factoring integers defined by other second and third order recurrence relations. Specifically we include the Fibonacci, Tribonacci and Lucas numbers. We have verified the known factorizations of first 382 Fibonacci numbers and the first 185 Lucas numbers, we also completely factored the first 311 Tribonacci numbers.

Multidimensional Subset Sum Problem, Vladimir Kolesnikov Jan 1997

Multidimensional Subset Sum Problem, Vladimir Kolesnikov

Theses

This thesis explores new modifications to the successful LLL approach to solving the Subset Sum problem. This work is an optimization of the matrix representation of an instance. Traditionally, the basis matrix contained only one column with set elements and the sum. In this thesis we suggest having several data columns (thus introducing multidimensionality). This allows us to reduce the size of coulmn entries which changes the complexity of the problem. Splitting the data into multiple columns greatly simplifies the task of solving the Subset Sum problem. However, other problems arise when we try to generate multiple columns. Here we …

Line Item Veto And The Tax Legislative Process: A Futile Effort At Deficit Reduction, But A Step Toward Tax Integrity, Gordon T. Butler

UC Law Journal

In this Article, Professor Butler considers the effect of the line item veto on the tax legislative process. The Article begins with a description of the development of the crises in the federal deficit and the efforts made by Congress to limit spending so as to balance the budget. In particular, it describes the Gramm, Rudman, Hollings Act and the Budget Enforcement Act of 1990 which attempted to impose structural restraints on new tax and spending legislation. When these efforts proved insufficient to balance the budget, Congress turned to the line item veto as an additional structural restraint. The Article …

Intellectual Property Rights In Data?, J. H. Reichman, Pamela Samuelson Jan 1997

Intellectual Property Rights In Data?, J. H. Reichman, Pamela Samuelson

Vanderbilt Law Review

The international intellectual property system founded on the Paris and Berne Conventions in the late nineteenth century has been dominated by the patent and copyright paradigms, which articulate the legal protection of technological inventions and of literary and artistic works, respectively. Although this patent-copyright dichotomy was never as strictly observed abroad as in the United States, it nonetheless charted a relatively clear theoretical line of demarcation between legal incentives to create and the public interest in free competition. Any publicly disclosed technologies or information products that failed to meet the eligibility requirements of the domestic patent and copyright laws became …
