On The Solution Of The E.P.D. Equation Using Finite Integral Transformations, Neşe Dernek

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, a solution is given for the following initial boundary value problem: \Delta=u_{tt}+k/t+u_t+g(x, t) (t>0) u(0, t)=u(a, t)=0 u(x, 0)=f(x), u_t(x, 0)=0 where x, a \epsilon R^n, t is the time variable, k < 1, k ? -1, -2, -3, . . . is a real parameter, \Delta is the n dimensional Laplace operator, f and g real analytic functions. The equation in this problem is known as the nonhomogeneous Euler-Poisson-Darboux (E.P.D.) Equation. The solution is obtained using finite integral transformation technique and is the sum of two uniformly and absolutely convergent power series.

Fostering Diversity In The Legal Profession: A Model For Preparing Minority And Other Non-Traditional Students For Law School, Lorraine K. Bannai, Marie Eaton

Faculty Articles

Undergraduate institutions, on their own and in partnership with law schools, can and should play a more significant role in expanding the pool of law school applicants from non-traditional backgrounds. The Law and Diversity Program at Western Washington University was conceived out of this desire to prepare non-traditional students for the study of law and thereby help bring more diversity to the legal profession. This article discusses the model used by the Law and Diversity Program to prepare non-traditional students for law school and the program's success in accomplishing its goals. It was the hope of the author to create …

Hazard Communication: A Review Of The Science Underpinning The Art Of Communication For Health And Safety, Barbara Sattler, B Lippy, T Jordan

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

This report was commissioned by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration to review the state of scientific inquiry supporting our knowledge regarding key elements of chemical hazard communication programs: labeling, warnings, material safety data sheets, and worker training. This endeavor supports the international effort to harmonize laws, regulations, and consensus standards affecting the ways in which information about hazardous chemicals is communicated. The international effort can be divided into three major functions: classifying health and environmental hazards, classifying physical hazards; and communicating hazard information. This last component involves the determination of what information will be communicated to users …

Glycals : An Extended Study Of The Ferrier-Dimerization, Andreas H. Franz Jan 1997

Glycals : An Extended Study Of The Ferrier-Dimerization, Andreas H. Franz

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

C-linked disaccharides were synthesized from 3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-D-glucal 1 (1,5- anhydro-3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-1,2-dideoxy-D-arabino-hex-I-enopyranose), 3,4,6-tri-O- acetyl-D-galactal 2 (1,5-anhydro-3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-1,2-dideoxy-D-lyxo-hex-1- enopyranose) and 3,4-di-O-acetyl-L-fucal 3 (1,5-anhydro-3,4-di-O-acetyl-1,2,6-tri-deoxy- L-lyxo-hex-1-enopyranose) under Lewis acid catalysis (Scheme 1) and compound 4 was further derivatized at the double bond. Dihydroxylation of the glucose dimer 4 gave high allo-diastereoselectivity. The reactions used in the derivatization of 1 were subsequently applied to 2 and 3. The overall yield of 3 was improved to 70 %. All three glycals (10% solution in toluene) reacted quickly with boron trifluoride to give dimerization products in 40-60% yield. Futile attempts at de-O-acetylation of the 2',3'-unsaturated dimer revealed the necessity of …

Postures Of Judging: An Exploration Of Judicial Decisionmaking, Daniel J. Solove Jan 1997

Postures Of Judging: An Exploration Of Judicial Decisionmaking, Daniel J. Solove

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article pits Ronald Dworkin against Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The article critiques Ronald Dworkin's answer to the question of fit: how judges reconcile general legal rules with particular situations. Dworkin's heavy focus on legal principles under-emphasizes the importance of facts in judicial decisionmaking. Exploring how judges approach the question of fit from a more literary perspective, the article examines the posture of a judge - a judge's physical and temporal position in relation to the cases she adjudicates, a position which affects the level of generality with which a judge perceives the facts of a case and directly influences a judge's …

The choice of the topics follows the author's personal interest in the subject, and there are probably some important results in this area that did not make to this survey. Most of the results presented here are left without the proofs.

Characterizing Derivatives By Preimages Of Sets, Krzysztof Ciesielski Jan 1997

Characterizing Derivatives By Preimages Of Sets, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In this note we will show that many classes F of real functions f : R → R can be characterized by preimages of sets in a sense that there exist families A and D of subsets of R such that F = C(D, A), where C(D, A) = {f ∈ R R : f −1 (A) ∈ D for every A ∈ A}. In particular, we will show that there exists a Bernstein B ⊂ R such that the family ∆ of all derivatives can be represented as ∆ = C(D, A), where A = S c∈R {(−∞, c),(c, …

Compositions Of Two Additive Almost Continuous Functions, Krzysztof Ciesielski Jan 1997

Compositions Of Two Additive Almost Continuous Functions, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In the paper we prove that an additive Darboux function f : R → R can be expressed as a composition of two additive almost continuous (connectivity) functions if and only if either f is almost continuous (connectivity) function or dim(ker(f)) 6= 1. We also show that for every cardinal number λ ≤ 2 ω there exists an additive almost continuous functions with dim(ker(f)) = λ. A question whether every Darboux function f : R → R can be expressed as a composition of two almost continuous functions (see [?] or [?]) remains open.

For arbitrary families A and B of subsets of R let C(A,B)= {f| f: R-->R and the image f[A] is in B for every A in A} and C-1 (A,B)= {f| f: R-->R and the inverse image f-1(B) is in A for every B in B}. A family F of real functions is characterizable by images (preimages) of sets if F=C(A,B) (F=C-1(A,B), respectively) for some families A and B. …

Surface Morphology Of Gan Films Determined From Quantitative X-Ray Reflectivity, D Lederman, Zhonghai Yu, T H. Myers, Michelle Richards-Babb Jan 1997

Surface Morphology Of Gan Films Determined From Quantitative X-Ray Reflectivity, D Lederman, Zhonghai Yu, T H. Myers, Michelle Richards-Babb

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The surface of two GaN films grown under Ga-rich conditions by molecular beam epitaxywas characterized using x-ray reflectivity, assuming a self-affine/fractal surface morphology. The surface height fluctuations were similar for both samples at the largest lateral length scales at which the fractal description is valid, although this lateral length was significantly greater and the “jaggedness” significantly smaller for the sample grown under higher Ga flux. Previous atomic force microscopy images revealed a higher density of large features on the surface for the sample grown under lower Ga flux. The lateral size of the features are dominated by a convolution of …

Hardware Interfacing In The Broadcast Industry Using Simple Network Management Protocol (Snmp), Walter H. Schuller Jr.

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Communication between various broadcast equipment plays a major role in the daily operation of a typical broadcast facility. For example, editing equipment must interface with tape machines, production switchers must interface with font generators and video effect equipment, and satellite ground controllers must interface with satellite dishes and receivers. Communication between these devices may be a simple hardware handshake configuration or a more elaborate software based communications via serial or parallel interfacing. This thesis concerns itself with the software interfacing needed to allow various dissimilar types of equipment to communicate, and therefore, interface with each other. The use of Simple …
