The Development Of The Flying Wing, Ralph L. Schwader Jan 1997

The Development Of The Flying Wing, Ralph L. Schwader

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

The quest for the perfect and efficient airplane has been an ongoing challenge throughout most of the 20th century. Man's struggle to understand the physical forces of aerodynamics has been costly not only in terms of economics but also in human lives. In the developmental and testing stages, aircraft designers and builders have always had to deal with the basic forces of lift, weight, thrust, and drag. The politics of the world also have had a major influence on the development of new aircraft, be it for profit or for war. Aircraft designers and manufacturers are continually searching for ways …

Vibration Analysis Of Textile Air Distribution Systems, Alan Bateman Jan 1997

Vibration Analysis Of Textile Air Distribution Systems, Alan Bateman

Theses

Textile air-distribution systems are air permeable materials used for air delivery applications where problems associated with solid steel ducting, such as condensation, local draughts, noise and hygiene are to be eliminated. The aim of this project was to investigate the causes of duct wall vibration in textile air-distribution systems. This was undertaken by consideration of the three aspects of a fluid dynamics problem; a) theoretical analysis, b) experimental analysis and c) analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics.

The aspect of textile air-distribution systems is still at an infancy stage and no publicised research was encountered in this area. Thus, the approach …

The Electrodynamic Levitation Of A Collar : Analysis, Experimentation And Simulation, Philip Nixon Jan 1997

The Electrodynamic Levitation Of A Collar : Analysis, Experimentation And Simulation, Philip Nixon

Theses

This dissertation describes various methods of maintaining a collar levitated in a vertical axis, using the well-known principle of electromagnetic induction between two circuits. The advantages of closing the magnetic loop around the collar, to obtain large radial flux cutting the collar and, therefore, large lifting forces for a given induced current, are considered in depth.

The ideal magnetic circuit and the equivalent electrical circuit are used in developing a model for two topologies of core (both an open and closed-circuit core) levitating a nonmagnetic conducting collar above a coil. Various affects that degrade the performance of the levitation rig …

Vertex-Edge Pseudo-Visibility Graphs: Characterization And Recognition, Joseph O'Rourke, Ileana Streinu Jan 1997

Vertex-Edge Pseudo-Visibility Graphs: Characterization And Recognition, Joseph O'Rourke, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We extend the notion of polygon visibility graphs to pseudo-polygons defined on generalized configurations of points. We consider both vertex-to-vertex, as well as vertex-to-edge visibility in pseudo-polygons. We study the characterization and recognition problems for vertex-edge pseudo-visibility graphs. Given a bipartite graph G satisfying three simple properties, which can all be checked in polynomial time, we show that we can define a generalized configuration of points and a pseudo-polygon on it, so that its vertex-edge pseudo-visibility graph is G. This provides a full characterization of vertex-edge pseudo-visibility graphs and a polynomial-time algorithm for the decision problem. It also implies that …

Examining Locally Varying Weights For Nearest Neighbor Algorithms, Nicholas Howe, Claire Cardie Jan 1997

Examining Locally Varying Weights For Nearest Neighbor Algorithms, Nicholas Howe, Claire Cardie

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Previous work on feature weighting for case-based learning algorithms has tended to use either global weights or weights that vary over extremely local regions of the case space. This paper examines the use of coarsely local weighting schemes, where feature weights are allowed to vary but are identical for groups or clusters of cases. We present a new technique, called class distribution weighting (CDW), that allows weights to vary at the class level. We further extend CDW into a family of related techniques that exhibit varying degrees of locality, from global to local. The class distribution techniques are then applied …

Improving Minority Class Prediction Using Case-Specific Feature Weights, Claire Cardie, Nicholas Howe Jan 1997

Improving Minority Class Prediction Using Case-Specific Feature Weights, Claire Cardie, Nicholas Howe

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the problem of handling skewed class distributions within the case-based learning (CBL) framework. We first present as a baseline an information gain-weighted CBL algorithm and apply it to three data sets from natural language processing (NLP) with skewed class distributions. Although overall performance of the baseline CBL algorithm is good, we show that the algorithm exhibits poor performance on minority class instances. We then present two CBL algorithms designed to improve the performance of minority class predictions. Each variation creates test-case-specific feature weights by first observing the path taken by the test case in a decision tree …

Clusters Of Stars, Ileana Streinu Jan 1997

Clusters Of Stars, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We solve two open problems posed by Goodman and Pollack[GP84] about sets of signed circular permutations (clusters of stars) arising from generalized configurations of points: recognition and efficient reconstruction (drawing). As a biproduct we get an O(n2) space data structure constructible in O(n2) time, representing the order type of a (generalized) configuration of points and from which the orientation of each triple can be found in constant time, a problem posed in [EHN].

Weak Bands Within Ice Stream B, West Antarctica, Christina L. Hulbe, I. M. Whillans Jan 1997

Weak Bands Within Ice Stream B, West Antarctica, Christina L. Hulbe, I. M. Whillans

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Kilometer-scale variations in ice velocity and surface topography are used to investigate the style of glacier deformation in the main body of Ice Stream B, West Antarctica. The pattern is very different from that reported for other glaciers. For the 250 km2 area studied on Ice Stream B, most of the observed deformation occurs within two narrow bands, in which there is large across-flow compression and slow lateral shearing. The bands underlie valleys in the ice-surface topography. Measured upward displacement of ice adjacent to the rapidly compressing bands appears to be linked to the creation of the ice stream's topography. …

Analysis And Design Optimization Of Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (Frp) Structural Beams., Pizhong Qiao Jan 1997

Analysis And Design Optimization Of Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (Frp) Structural Beams., Pizhong Qiao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Considering current and future applications of composite materials in civil engineering structures, a need exists for developing a design analysis and optimization approach for FRP shapes to improve their performance efficiency and competitiveness in relation to conventional materials. An analytical approach for design of pultruded FRP shapes under bending is proposed, and based on this approach, a computer program is developed to carry out the analysis of FRP sections. This analytical approach combines micro/macromechanics analyses with the Mechanics of thin-walled Laminated composite Beam model (MLB) to evaluate the response of existing pultruded FRP beams. Based on buckling analyses of individual …

Hausdorff Dimension Of Boundaries Of Self-Affine Tiles In R N, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 1997

Hausdorff Dimension Of Boundaries Of Self-Affine Tiles In R N, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a new method to calculate the Hausdorff dimension of a certain class of fractals: boundaries of self-affine tiles. Among the interesting aspects are that even if the affine contraction underlying the iterated function system is not conjugated to a similarity we obtain an upper- and and lower-bound for its Hausdorff dimension. In fact, we obtain the exact value for the dimension if the moduli of the eigenvalues of the underlying affine contraction are all equal (this includes Jordan blocks). The tiles we discuss play an important role in the theory of wavelets. We calculate the dimension for a …
