Investigating Teaching Strategies In Mathematics Classrooms : A Cd-Rom Resource Enabling Teachers To Explore Teaching Strategies In Mathematics Education, Tony John Herrington, Len Sparrow, Jan Herrington, Ron Oliver

Research outputs pre 2011

Teaching mathematics has traditionally followed a standard pattern across the world. Students are placed in classrooms where they are seated individually, are required to listen passively and observe the teacher demonstrating mathematical procedure and then s1 end extensive time practicing the newly acquired ski ll s. Generally the content being taught comprises mathematical facts and skills taught sequentially in the order presented by a textbook. Students are then assessed by unseen pencil and paper tests for the purpose of grading and ranking. This cycle is then repeated with another mathematical topic which is viewed by students as discrete from the …

The generation of sulfuric acid aerosols in aircraft exhaust has emerged as a critical issue in determining the impact of supersonic aircraft on stratospheric ozone. It has long been held that the first step in the mechanism of aerosol formation is the oxidation of SO2 emitted from the engine by OH in the exhaust plume. We report in situ measurements of OH and HO2 in the exhaust plumes of a supersonic (Air France Concorde) and a subsonic (NASA ER-2) aircraft in the lower stratosphere. These measurements imply that reactions with OH are responsible for oxidizing only a small fraction of …

Present To Future : The Innovations Of Leadership Studies, Christopher Hartman Engels

Honors Theses

Formal leadership education is the latest craze at the secondary level of education. Private high schools have for years stated in their brochures that their school produces leaders. However, only recently are these same schools clearly articulating a more formal structure in leadership education. An in-depth case study analysis of three private high schools in Virginia will not only allow for a look at their leadership curricula, but will allow for conclusion to be made about the best possible means of teaching leadership.

The Effects Of Exercise Training On Resting Prostacyclin And Thromboxane A(2) In Older Adults, R D. Kauffman, G S. Sforzo, Blaise Frost, M K. Todd

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Ten adult volunteers participated in 16 weeks of cardiovascular exercise training (EG) to determine the effects of training on resting prostacyclin (PGI(2)) and thromboxane A(2) (TXA(2)). Six volunteers of similar age served as sedentary controls (CG). Blood was collected in tubes after training and eicosanoids were measured by standard I-125 RIA methods. Over the 16 weeks of the study, PGI(2) decreased 48% for EG and 33% for CG. There were no between-group differences for PGI(2) values. No significant within-group changes in TXA(2) were found, whereas between-group pretraining TXA(2) values were significantly different. A time main effect for PGI(2) may indicate …

The Oral Communication Competence Dilemma: Are We Communicating Competently About Speech Communication?, Cathy A. Fleuriet Jan 1997

The Oral Communication Competence Dilemma: Are We Communicating Competently About Speech Communication?, Cathy A. Fleuriet

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses the oral communication competence problem among students in public schools, colleges and universities in the U.S. In response to concerned administrators who question the value of the study of speech communication, communication specialists are providing definitions and assessment of oral communication competence in order to solidify the speech communication discipline's role in ensuring competence among students in higher education. Many of the schools fulfilling the mandate through English/Language Arts courses included initial statements in their documents explaining that the requirement is being met through communication courses. A major problem in monitoring the oral communication competency mandate, such …

Educational Assessment As Invitation For Dialogue, Ronald C. Arnett, Pat Arneson Jan 1997

Educational Assessment As Invitation For Dialogue, Ronald C. Arnett, Pat Arneson

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article offers a communicative foundation for viewing the act of educational assessment as an opportunity for dialogue with a larger public in the U.S. There are three main areas which comprise an invitation for dialogue with the public: the politics of assessment, foundation for dialogue about the communication discipline and the proposal for a dialogic communication with the public as a way to create shared meaning about the process of communication. Invitation to dialogue envisions communication as socially constructed. Both self and other are central to the emergence of truth. The wise communicator is careful, but in the midst …

National Preferences In Business And Communication Education: A Survey Update, Jerry L. Winsor, Dan B. Curtis, Ronald D. Stephens

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses the results of a survey in the U.S. regarding national preferences in business and communication education. From the results of this and the previous study, it appears that the skills most valued in the contemporary job-entry market are communication skills. The skills of listening, oral communication (both interpersonal and public), written communication and the trait of enthusiasm are indicated to be the most important. Again, it would appear to follow that university officials wishing to be of the greatest help to their graduates in finding employment would make sure that basic competencies in oral and written communication …

Continuum Limit Of Lattice Approximation Schemes, Carl M. Bender, Alexander Tovbis Jan 1997

Continuum Limit Of Lattice Approximation Schemes, Carl M. Bender, Alexander Tovbis

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Boundary-layer perturbation theory problems are inherently singular. However, it is known that discretizing the problem by introducing a lattice may convert such problems into regular perturbation problems. The singular nature of boundary-layer problems is then relegated to and hidden in the continuum limit, the subtle limit in which the lattice spacing tends to zero. If the lattice is introduced cavalierly, then extrapolating to zero lattice spacing gives a sequence of extrapolants that at first approaches the correct limit and then veers off, thereby revealing the asymptotic nature of such problems. However, discretizing the problem following the procedures described here yields …

Transform Coding Of Signals Using Approximate Trigonometric Expansions, Qurban A. Memon, Takis Kasparis Jan 1997

Transform Coding Of Signals Using Approximate Trigonometric Expansions, Qurban A. Memon, Takis Kasparis

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

For signal representation it is always preferred that a signal be represented using a minimum number of parameters. in any transform coding scheme, the central operation is the reduction of correlation and thereby with appropriate coding of the transform coefficients, allows data compression to be achieved. The objective of data encoding is to transform a data array into a statistically uncorrelated set. This step is typically considered a "decorrelation" step, because in the case of unitary transformations the resulting transform coefficients are relatively uncorrelated. Most unitary transforms have the tendency to compact the signal energy into relatively few coefficients. The …

An Approach To The Synthesis Of Biological Tissue, Jannick P. Rolland, Robin N. Strickland Jan 1997

An Approach To The Synthesis Of Biological Tissue, Jannick P. Rolland, Robin N. Strickland

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Mathematical phantoms developed to synthesize realistic complex backgrounds such as those obtained when imaging biological tissue, play a key role in the quantitative assessment of image quality for medical and biomedical imaging. We present a modeling framework for the synthesis of realistic tissue samples. The technique is demonstrated using radiological breast tissue. The model employs a two-component image decomposition consisting of a slowly, spatially varying mean-background and a residual texture image. Each component is synthesized independently. The approach and results presented here constitute an important step towards developing methods for the quantitative assessment of image quality in medical and biomedical …

Transfer Of Momentum And Torque From A Light Beam To A Liquid, A. Yu. Savchenko, N. V. Tabiryan, B. Ya. Zel'dovich Jan 1997

Transfer Of Momentum And Torque From A Light Beam To A Liquid, A. Yu. Savchenko, N. V. Tabiryan, B. Ya. Zel'dovich

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Refraction or absorption of light results in the force and torque, i.e., transfer of momentum and angular momentum from light to the medium. In transversely inhomogeneous beams, the force per unit volume f may have curlf not equal 0 leading to flow or to nonthermal and nongravitational convection in liquids. The force and the torque in scattering systems are as strong as in absorbing materials and may allow one to carry out experiments avoiding thermal effects. Nonlinear optical response of liquid crystals due to this convection is discussed.

Dynamics Of Low-Dimensional Dipolar Systems, J. M. Sun, Weili Luo Jan 1997

Dynamics Of Low-Dimensional Dipolar Systems, J. M. Sun, Weili Luo

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Time decays of low-dimensional magnetic dipoles with anisotropic energy barriers were studied theoretically. We found that the dynamic behaviors are interaction specific. For a chain with ferromagnetic coupling, a single mode dominates and the decay is essentially exponential. For antiferromagnetic coupling, the dynamics can be characterized by two distinct groups of time scales. The spectrum results in a plateau in the decay of remanent magnetization. This novel behavior differs from the prediction of the mean-field theory. For a two-dimensional rectangular lattice, a transition between the bimodal decay and a quasilogarithmic decay occurs when the ratio of length to width varies.

Practical Considerations On Color Image Enhancement Using Homomorphic Filtering, Liviu I. Voicu, Harley R. Myler, Arthur R. Weeks

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We present a study concerning the practical possibilities of using the homomorphic filtering for color image enhancement, Two of the most popular color models, RGB and C-Y (color difference), are employed and the results are comparatively discussed. The homomorphic filtering has proven to be a viable tool for both color models considered.

Mathematical Modeling Of Melting During Laser Materials Processing, J. Xie, A. Kar Jan 1997

Mathematical Modeling Of Melting During Laser Materials Processing, J. Xie, A. Kar

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Melting is encountered in almost all laser materials processing. This article deals with a one-dimensional heat conduction problem to investigate the melting rate during laser materials processing. The problem is solved approximately to obtain a correlation among melt depth, power density, and laser irradiation time. Based on this correlation, the dynamics of melting, a relationship between the melt depth and power density and an average melting velocity are expressed by simple analytic formulas. These expressions are further simplified for high power densities (I greater than or equal to 10(9) W/m(2)). The times to reach the melting and boiling temperatures at …

Melting And Vaporization For Large-Area Film Removal With A Chemical Oxygen-Iodine Laser, J. Xie, A. Kar Jan 1997

Melting And Vaporization For Large-Area Film Removal With A Chemical Oxygen-Iodine Laser, J. Xie, A. Kar

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Large-area film removal with lasers is a physical process of melting and vaporization of films. A mathematical model is developed to simulate the melting and vaporization of films under the irradiation of a chemical oxygen-iodine laser. The cross section of the film after laser scanning and the substrate surface temperature during laser irradiation are presented. There is an optimum laser power at which relatively wide films can be removed by maintaining low temperature at the substrate surface. The optimum laser power is associated with other process parameters. The results of film removal with TEM31 and TEM00 beams are compared, and …
