A Theoretical And Empirical Study Of A Noise-Tolerant Algorithm To Learn Geometric Patterns, Sally A. Goldman, Stephen D. Scott Jan 1997

A Theoretical And Empirical Study Of A Noise-Tolerant Algorithm To Learn Geometric Patterns, Sally A. Goldman, Stephen D. Scott

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Developing the ability to recognize a landmark from a visual image of a robot's current location is a fundamental problem in robotics. We describe a way in which the landmark matching problem can be mapped to that of learning a one-dimensional geometric pattern. The first contribution of our work is an efficient noise-tolerant algorithm (designed using the statistical query model) to PAC-learn the class of one-dimensional geometric patterns. The second contribution of our work is an empirical study of our algorithm that provides at least some evidence that statistical query algorithms may be valuable for use in practice for handling …

Reducing Web Latencies Using Precomputed Hints, Girish P. Chandranmenon, George Varghese Jan 1997

Reducing Web Latencies Using Precomputed Hints, Girish P. Chandranmenon, George Varghese

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Current network technology is bandwidth-rich but latency-poor; thus round-trip delays will dominate access latency for web traffic. We describe four new techniques that reduce the round-trips needed for web accesses. The techniques are based on the paradigm of preprocessing a web page to collect information about links and inline data in the page. Stored Address Binding almost always eliminates the DNS lookup (which can cost seconds) at the start of a transaction. In Informed Server Proxying, a server tells its client that it has cached pages referenced in a page the client just retrieved; this allows the client to retrieve …

An Architecture For Monitoring Visualization And Control Of Gigabit Networks, Guru Parulkar, Douglas Schmidt, Eileen Kraemer, Jonathan Turner, Anshul Kantawala Jan 1997

An Architecture For Monitoring Visualization And Control Of Gigabit Networks, Guru Parulkar, Douglas Schmidt, Eileen Kraemer, Jonathan Turner, Anshul Kantawala

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We propose a network monitoring, visualization and control system (NMVC) that ensures adequate quality of service to network users while maintaining high network resource utilization. The main components of our system are a network probe, an endsystem probe, software network management agents that provide extensible multi-attribute event filtering for highly scalable data/event collection, network operation centers (NOCs) which can remotely install and (re)configure these agents, efficient online event ordering algorithms that can help synthesize and display a consistent view of network health, status and performance and a View Choreographer that allows management applications and administrators to specify the mapping of …

Symmetrical Routes And Reverse Path Congestion Control, Rajib Ghosh, George Varghese Jan 1997

Symmetrical Routes And Reverse Path Congestion Control, Rajib Ghosh, George Varghese

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We describe new mechanisms to deal with asymmetries that arise in routing protocols. We show how to avoid route asymmetries (due to non-unique shortest paths) by adding random integer link costs. We show in detail how RIP can be modified to avoid route asymmetry with high probability, without affecting either its efficiency or performance metrics such as convergence time. Symmetrical intra-domain routing also makes possible a new form of congestion control that we call Reverse Path Congestion Control (RPCC). We show, using simulations, that RPCC can augment existing TCP congestion control mechanisms to improve start up behavior and to avoid …

Sequence Assembly Validation By Restriction Digest Fingerprint Comparison, Eric C. Rouchka, David J. States Jan 1997

Sequence Assembly Validation By Restriction Digest Fingerprint Comparison, Eric C. Rouchka, David J. States

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

DNA sequence analysis depends on the accurate assembly of fragment reads for the determination of a consensus sequence. Genomic sequences frequently contain repeat elements that may confound the fragment assembly process, and errors in fragment assembly, and errors in fragment assembly may seriously impact the biological interpretation of the sequence data. Validating the fidelity of sequence assembly by experimental means is desirable. This report examines the use of restriction digest analysis as a method for testing the fidelity of sequence assembly. Restriction digest fingerprint matching is an established technology for high resolution physical map construction, but the requirements for assembly …

Exact Learning Of Discretized Geometric Concepts, Nader H. Bshouty, Paul W. Goldberg, Sally A. Goldman, H. David Mathias Jan 1997

Exact Learning Of Discretized Geometric Concepts, Nader H. Bshouty, Paul W. Goldberg, Sally A. Goldman, H. David Mathias

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We first present an algorithm that uses membership and equivalence queries to exactly identify a discretized geometric concept defined by the unioin of m axis-parallel boxes in d-dimensional discretized Euclidean space where each coordinate can have n discrete values. This algorithm receives at most md counterexamples and uses time and membership queries polynomial in m and log(n) for any constant d. Furthermore, all equivalence queries can be formulated as the union of O(mdlog(m)) axis-parallel boxes. Next, we show how to extend our algorithm to efficiently learn, from only equivalence queries, any discretized geometric concept generated from any number of halfspaces …

End-User Visualization And Manipulation Of Distributed Aggregate Data, T. Paul Mccartney, Kenneth J. Goldman Jan 1997

End-User Visualization And Manipulation Of Distributed Aggregate Data, T. Paul Mccartney, Kenneth J. Goldman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Aggregate visualization and manipulation enables the viewing and interaction of dynamically changing data sets in a graphically meaningful way. However, off-the-shelf applications typically provide only limited ways to view static aggregates and generally to not support manipulation of aggregate data through the resulting visualization. To be fully dynamic, an aggregate visualization should be customizable to suit the individual's needs and should allow end-users to modify the data through direct manipulation. This paper describes a software system that empowers end-users to create interactive aggregate visualizations through a visual language interface. Included are mechanisms for specifying how aggregate data is processed from …

An Error Control Scheme For Large-Scale Multicast Applications, Christos Papadopoulos, Guru Parulkar, George Varghese Jan 1997

An Error Control Scheme For Large-Scale Multicast Applications, Christos Papadopoulos, Guru Parulkar, George Varghese

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Retransmission based error control for large scale multicast applications is difficult because of two main problems: request implosion and lack of local recovery. Existing schemes (SRM, RMTP, TMTP, LBRRM) have good solutions to request implosion, but only approximate solutions (e.g., based on scoped multicast) for the local recovery problem. Our scheme achieves finer grain fault recovery by exploiting new forwarding services that allow us to create a dynamic hierarchy of receivers. We use a new paradigm, where routers provide a more refined form of multicasting (that may be useful to other applications), that enables local recovery. The new services, however, …

Factors Affecting The Recruitment Of Juvenile Caribbean Spiny Lobsters Dwelling In Macroalgae, Mark J. Butler Iv, William F. Herrnkind, John H. Hunt Jan 1997

Factors Affecting The Recruitment Of Juvenile Caribbean Spiny Lobsters Dwelling In Macroalgae, Mark J. Butler Iv, William F. Herrnkind, John H. Hunt

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In south Florida, Caribbean spiny lobsters (Panulirus argus) settle and spend their first few months in macroalgae or seagrass. After a few months, these ''algal-phase'' juveniles emerge from vegetation and, as ''postalgal-phase'' juveniles, seek refuge in crevices, often dwelling in groups. The importance of crevice shelters in determining the abundance of postalgal-phase juvenile spiny lobsters has been studied but we know little about the processes affecting lobster distribution and survival during their cryptic algal-dwelling phase. We found that postlarval supply varied independently of changes in the structure of macroalgal settlement habitat. For this reason, postlarval supply alone can not reliably …

Fluxes Of Copper-Complexing Ligands From Estuarine Sediments, Stephen A. Skrabal, John R. Donat, David J. Burdige Jan 1997

Fluxes Of Copper-Complexing Ligands From Estuarine Sediments, Stephen A. Skrabal, John R. Donat, David J. Burdige

OES Faculty Publications

Most studies of the organic complexation of Cu in natural waters have focused on distributions and processes in the water column, where a significant fraction of Cu-complexing ligands may be biologically produced. We present direct evidence for a flux of Cu-complexing ligands from estuarine sediments, demonstrating that sediments are a significant, yet previously unrecognized source of the ligands. Fluxes of Cu-complexing ligands from Chesapeake Bay sediments range from 300 to 1,200 nmol m-2 d-1, exceeding fluxes of total dissolved Cu by 3->40-fold, suggesting that any Cu fluxing from the sediments is likely to be organically complexed. …

When Democracy Is Not Self-Government: Toward A Defense Of The Unanimity Rule For Criminal Juries, Richard A. Primus Jan 1997

When Democracy Is Not Self-Government: Toward A Defense Of The Unanimity Rule For Criminal Juries, Richard A. Primus

Cardozo Law Review

In 1972, the Supreme Court sanctioned a departure from a long tradition of common law jury procedure by announcing that criminal juries in state courts need not achieve unanimity to convict. The issue remains contentious. On its face, whether or not unanimity should be required in jury verdicts is a procedural question. In reality, of course, the question implicates substantive policy issues as well. Concerns about jury decision rules are linked, as many procedural questions are, to concerns about the results that the procedures in question will yield. For example, a system that allowed non-unanimous verdicts would probably have a …

The Relationship Of Teacher Retention To Personality Style At Visionquest National Limited, Beth Ann Rosica Jan 1997

The Relationship Of Teacher Retention To Personality Style At Visionquest National Limited, Beth Ann Rosica

Dissertations

Problem. VisionQuest National Limited is a treatment and education program for court-placed students. Recruiting and retaining quality teachers is a problem faced by VisionQuest administrators. Over the course of a school year, there are usually several teaching-position vacancies, and turnover is high, especially in the first few months of employment.

Method. The Keirsey Temperament Sorter, a derivative of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, was administered to all VisionQuest teachers to determine their personality type. The personality types of the VisionQuest teachers were compared to those of teachers in the general population. Length of employment of VisionQuest teachers was also analyzed in …

Comparison Of Pulmonary Artery, Tympanic, Oral, And Axillary Temperatures, Linda Oravec Walter Jan 1997

Comparison Of Pulmonary Artery, Tympanic, Oral, And Axillary Temperatures, Linda Oravec Walter

Masters Theses

Hypothermia depresses the myocardium and shifts the oxygen dissociation curve to the left. Accurate tem perature monitoring Is essential. Studies conflict regarding the accuracy of sites other than the pulmonary artery (the gold standard) In temperature measurement of intubated patients. Using Roy’s Adaptation Model as a conceptual framework, repeated measures analysis of variance found a significant difference between the pulmonary artery, tympanic, oral, and axillary temperatures when taken within 15 minutes of arriving to the cardiothoracic unit and then hourly for four hours after open heart surgery. Post hoc t-test showed significant differences during rapid temperature changes. When temperatures were …

An Integrated Unit Of Study, Diana J. Drummer Jan 1997

An Integrated Unit Of Study, Diana J. Drummer

Honors Capstones

Children learn through their experiences and through active participation. If this statement is true, then the child within the school setting must be taught according to this belief. Integrated curriculum allows for the student to connect all the disciplines of math, science, social studies, reading and other subjects and presents them with a clear, organized picture of the purpose and reason for learning. Hilda Taba designed an outline for integration that present students with real life problems and allows for the students to solve these problem. She believes that students, when presented with ideas and facts, will pull the information …

Grasp--A Language To Facilitate The Synthesis Of Parallel Programs, Todd Alan Gross Jan 1997

Grasp--A Language To Facilitate The Synthesis Of Parallel Programs, Todd Alan Gross

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the context of this thesis, the name Grasp subsumes three distinct but highly interrelated projects. First of all, Grasp is a programming language that allows the user to define properties of graph-theoretic objects by using high-level nonprocedural descriptions called specifications. Second, Grasp is a translator that converts specifications to standard sequential C functions. Finally, Grasp is a model of computation that has been left largely uninvestigated despite possessing several advantageous properties. Each of these aspects of Grasp is described in a contextually clean and detailed manner, but in the end the theoretical aspects of Grasp are espoused over the …

An Analysis Of Printed Circuit Boards During Reflow Soldering., Paul Barry Jan 1997

An Analysis Of Printed Circuit Boards During Reflow Soldering., Paul Barry

Theses

Electronic manufacturing is currently one of the fastest growing industrial areas. This is due to the rapid advances in the computer and telecommunications sectors. Due to these advances, new surface mount devices have been developed to achieve greater miniaturisation at lower costs. As a result, a new surface mount technology has been developed to mount these devices onto printed circuit boards. However, problems exist with aspects of this process, principally open solder joints which result from circuit board warpage. The aim of this thesis is to undertake a) both an experimental and theoretical investigation of the reflow solder process and …

Expert System For The Generation Of A Work Breakdown Structure, Bernard O'Callaghan Jan 1997

Expert System For The Generation Of A Work Breakdown Structure, Bernard O'Callaghan

Theses

This thesis outlines research work carried out in the Mechanical & Manufacturing Department in Cork Regional Technical College, Ireland. With computers now having an increasingly dominant role in all areas of business, it was inevitable that computer-based project management packages would become more popular. To date however, these packages have concentrated on monitoring and controlling projects. The definition and brainstorming phases required to generate a project plan are still largely manual tasks. Planning a project initially involves generating a complete and organised list of all the tasks needing to be completed in order to achieve a project’s goal. This list …

The Litigious Plaintiff Hypothesis: Case Selection And Resolution, Theodore Eisenberg, Henry S. Farber Jan 1997

The Litigious Plaintiff Hypothesis: Case Selection And Resolution, Theodore Eisenberg, Henry S. Farber

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The process through which cases are selected for litigation cannot be ignored because it yields a set of lawsuits and plaintiffs that is far from a random selection either of potential claims or of potential claimants. We present a theoretical framework for understanding the operation of this suit-selection process and its relationship to the underlying distribution of potential claims and claimants. The model has implications for the trial rate and the plaintiff win rate at trial. Our empirical analysis, using data on over 200,000 federal civil litigations, yields results that are strongly consistent with the theory.

Orientation Effects On African-American Engineering Students: The Lsu Case., Forest Dent Smith Jan 1997

Orientation Effects On African-American Engineering Students: The Lsu Case., Forest Dent Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Extended orientation courses continue to be introduced as curriculum offerings that assist students to persist in post-secondary institutions. Research on the outcomes of such courses in terms of student retention and achievement is, with regard to race, however, not proceeding at the same pace as orientation course research in general. The purpose of this study was to apply the attrition models of Tinto (1987) and Pascarella, Terenzini, and Wolfe (1986) and examine extended orientation as a contributing factor to the retention and achievement of African-American engineering students. The sample of the study consisted of 354 African-American students who were members …

Coastal Restoration Using Pipeline-Conveyed Sediments., Catherine Faith Voisin Jan 1997

Coastal Restoration Using Pipeline-Conveyed Sediments., Catherine Faith Voisin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A spreadsheet program was successfully developed which determines the engineering requirements for pipeline transport of sediments from dredge sites to wetland restorations sites. The program called SLURRY.XLS involves several new correlations. A new correlation for determining the critical velocity of particle transport is presented. New correlations were statistically developed for determining the drag coefficient of particles. The spreadsheet also successfully determines settling velocities of the individual particle sizes in any settling regime. A second spreadsheet program entitled "CONSOL.XLS" uses geotechnical principles of consolidation for determining marsh surface elevation with and without hydraulic fill versus time. The CONSOL.XLS program permits the …

Lie Theory Of Differentiable Transformations On Banach-Type Manifolds., Amadou Belly Guisse Jan 1997

Lie Theory Of Differentiable Transformations On Banach-Type Manifolds., Amadou Belly Guisse

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Let M be a manifold modeled on a Banach space B, and let U be an open subset of M containing the domain of some chart $\varphi$. The aim of this work is to set mathematical foundations (topological, algebraic geometrical) for the theory of pseudosemigroups of local transformations S on M and their infinitesimal generators $L\sp{r}(S,\ U).$ In the first part of this dissertation we define the topology of local uniform convergence, the most suitable in this case, similar to the compact open topology in the finite dimensional case, and show what relationship it has with different topologies. In the …

A Methodological Examination Of Naturally Occurring School Improvement In Louisiana Schools., John Albert Freeman Jan 1997

A Methodological Examination Of Naturally Occurring School Improvement In Louisiana Schools., John Albert Freeman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The study was conducted as an exploratory investigation of naturally occurring school improvement, which refers to improvement in a school's effectiveness status that is achieved without external change forces. The research design for the study used mixed methodologies divided into three phases to identify and examine schools that improved longitudinally in a "natural" environment. Phase I utilized regression (ordinary least squares) methods to create a database containing all elementary schools in Louisiana, categorized by their level of change. As a result, some 20% of the schools in Louisiana were identified as having improved over a three-year period. This approximated an …

Pure Framed Braids And 3-Manifolds., Jonathan Natov Jan 1997

Pure Framed Braids And 3-Manifolds., Jonathan Natov

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation looks at representations of framed pure braids and compact orientable three manifolds. A representation, $\Phi:Z\sp{n}\oplus P\sb{n}\to \Gamma\sb{n},$ is constructed from the framed pure braid group on n strands to the mapping class group on a surface of genus n. The representation is used to obtain a presentation of the fundamental group. The representation, like that of (M-P), is compatible with Heegaard and Surgery descriptions. An algorithm is presented for transforming mapping class group elements to a stably equivalent pure framed braid, under the correspondence given by the representation. A geometric description, using the representation, is given for multiplication …
