Experiments With "Hp Java", Bryan Carpenter, Yuh-Jye Chang, Geoffrey C. Fox, Donald Leskiw

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We consider the possible role of Java as a language for High Performance Computing. After discussing reasons why Java may be a natural candidate for a portable parallel programming language, we describe several case studies. These cover Java socket programming, message-passing through a Java interface to MPI, and class libraries for data-parallel programming in Java.

Hpjava: Data Parallel Extensions To Java, Bryan Carpenter, Guansong Zhang, Geoffrey C. Fox, Xinying Li

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We outline an extension of Java for programming with distributed arrays. The basic programming style is Single Program Multiple Data (SPMD), but parallel arrays are provided as new language primitives. Further extensions include three distributed control constructs, the most important being a data-parallel loop construct. Communications involving distributed arrays are handled through a standard library of collective operations. Because the underlying programming model is SPMD programming, direct calls to MPI or other communication packages are also allowed in an HPJava program.

How Secure Transactions Are Achieved On The Internet Using Ssl: An Honors Presentation Of Internet Security Practices And Protocols, Julie Klinefelter

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The goal of this project is to research and present the security protocol "Secure Sockets Layer" or as it is more commonly referred to, "SSL." SSL is one of the main encryption techniques used by the internet industry to help ensure the secure transfer of information across the internet. It is one of the main encryption techniques currently under review by Internet Engineering Task Force. SSL is comprised of a strict protocol that initiates a secure "session" between two computing devices. The session is established above the transport level (on the OSI model) and encrypts from the session up. Therefore …

Directed Panspermia. 3. Strategies And Motivations For Seeding Star-Forming Clouds, Michael Noah Mautner Jan 1997

Directed Panspermia. 3. Strategies And Motivations For Seeding Star-Forming Clouds, Michael Noah Mautner

Chemistry Publications

Microbial swarms aimed at star-forming regions of interstellar clouds can seed stellar associations of 10 - 100 young planetary systems. Swarms of millimeter size, milligram packets can be launched by 35 cm solar sails at 5E-4 c, to penetrate interstellar clouds. Selective capture in high-density planetary accretion zones of densities > 1E-17 kg m-3 is achieved by viscous drag. Strategies are evaluated to seed dense cloud cores, or individual protostellar condensations, accretion disks or young planets therein. Targeting the Ophiuchus cloud is described as a model system. The biological content, dispersed in 30 μm, 1E-10 kg capsules of 1E6 freeze-dried microorganisms …

Forest Research In Iowa's State Parks - The Values Of Natural Diversity, Donald R. Farrar Jan 1997

Forest Research In Iowa's State Parks - The Values Of Natural Diversity, Donald R. Farrar

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Approximately 3% of Iowa's forests are contained in state parks and preserves. In addition to aesthetics and recreation, these protected forests provide a vital service in the unique opportunities they provide for forest research. As intact ecosystems where natural ecological processes dominate, they provide standards by which we measure the effects of livestock pasturing, methods of timber harvest, and other manipulations of managed forests. A number of current studies and public programs emphasize the importance of natural diversity in forests. They rely on state parks and preserves to provide a measure of potential diversity for a given region of the …

We have measured the molecular orientation and bonding of adsorbed ferrocene on Ag(100) and Cu(100) using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The results for molecular adsorption on Ag(100) are complemented by high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) measurments and ab initio calculations for the ferrocene vibrational modes. The measurements indicate that ferrocene adsorbs on Ag(100) with the molecular axis perpendicular to the surface. In contrast, as indicated using ARPES and scanning tunneling microscopy, ferrocene adsorbed on the Cu(100) surface is oriented with the molecular axis parallel with the surface. Model calculations allow us to assign all of the observed vibrational modes …

Early Efforts Of The U.S. Public Accounting Profession To Investigate The Use Of Statistical Sampling, James Joseph Tucker, Frank C. Lordi Jan 1997

Early Efforts Of The U.S. Public Accounting Profession To Investigate The Use Of Statistical Sampling, James Joseph Tucker, Frank C. Lordi

Accounting Historians Journal

The study suggests that the AICPA's efforts to investigate the use of statistical sampling appear to have been catalyzed by the confluence of the growing dissatisfaction with the traditional approach to sampling and the widespread recognition of the benefits of statistical sampling which were being realized in other professions and in industry. The fact that large corporations had begun to use statistical sampling in accounting and auditing lent additional urgency to the need to address the issue. In addition, some doubted the tenability of traditional sampling if challenged in court by a statistician. The study also examines the research efforts …

Spatial Analysis Of The Cause Of Mercury Contamination Of Fish In Arkansas - A Report Submitted To The Arkansas Mercury Task Force, H. S. Lin, H. D. Scott Jan 1997

Spatial Analysis Of The Cause Of Mercury Contamination Of Fish In Arkansas - A Report Submitted To The Arkansas Mercury Task Force, H. S. Lin, H. D. Scott

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

There have been concerns about mercury (Hg) contamination in fish in Arkansas since the discovery of the problem in the Ouachita River in 1992 (Armstrong et aI., 1995). Of the more than 170 lakes and streams sampled by the Mercury Task Force from 1992 through 1994, 23% had fish with Hg concentrations exceeding the FDA Action Level of 1 ppm (Armstrong et aI., 1995). Cause of the fish Hg contamination, however, is unknown. Given the economic, human-health and environmental costs associated with fish Hg contamination, it is critical that the cause of this widely-spread problem be identified. Determination of the …

Myoglobin-Facilitated Oxygen Diffusion In The Heart: A Mathematical Assessment, Jason D. Gardner Jan 1997

Myoglobin-Facilitated Oxygen Diffusion In The Heart: A Mathematical Assessment, Jason D. Gardner

Doctoral Dissertations

Myoglobin facilitated oxygen diffusion and Michaelis-Menten kinetics are added to an experimentally-validated cardiac tissue model to determine the steady-state function of myoglobin in working heart tissue. Previous modeling of tissue oxygen partial pressure (pO$\sb2)$ data suggests that the oxygen diffusion coefficient in working heart tissue is greater than expected. To fit the pO$\sb2$ data, the tissue oxygen diffusion coefficient in the model must be elevated to 8 to 12 times reported values. These elevated values of the tissue oxygen diffusion coefficient are not acceptable based upon the current understanding of cardiac muscle physiology. In this dissertation the effect of including …

Surface Textural Analysis Of Quartz Sand Grains From Odp Site 918 Off The Southeast Coast Of Greenland Suggests Glaciation Of Southern Greenland At 11 Ma, P. E. Helland, Mary Anne Holmes Jan 1997

Surface Textural Analysis Of Quartz Sand Grains From Odp Site 918 Off The Southeast Coast Of Greenland Suggests Glaciation Of Southern Greenland At 11 Ma, P. E. Helland, Mary Anne Holmes

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Shipboard analysis of the 1,183-m sedimentary section recovered at Site 918 in the Irminger Basin during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 152 revealed material of glacial origin (diamictons, ice-rafted debris (IRD) and dropstones) as deep as 543 m below sea floor (bsf). The sediment containing the deepest dropstone was biostratigraphically dated shipboard as approximately 7 Ma, pushing back the date for the onset of glaciation on southern Greenland by 5 Ma. Thin layers of fine sand were found as much as 60 m deeper in the core, raising the possibility of an even earlier date for glaciation. To determine the sedimentary …

A Comparison Of Annealing Techniques For Academic Course Scheduling, M.A. Saleh Elmohamed, Geoffrey C. Fox, Paul Coddington Jan 1997

A Comparison Of Annealing Techniques For Academic Course Scheduling, M.A. Saleh Elmohamed, Geoffrey C. Fox, Paul Coddington

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

In this study we have tackled the NP-hard problem of academic class scheduling (or timetabling) at the university level. We have investigated a variety of approaches based on simulated annealing, including mean-field annealing, simulated annealing with three different cooling schedules, and the use of a rule-based preprocessor to provide a good initial solution for annealing. The best results were obtained using simulated annealing with adaptive cooling and reheating as a function of cost, and a rule-based preprocessor. This approach enabled us to obtain valid schedules for the timetabling problem for a large university, using a complex cost function that includes …
