The Organization As A Person: Analogues For Intervention, John G. Bruhn Jan 1997

The Organization As A Person: Analogues For Intervention, John G. Bruhn

Clinical Sociology Review

Attempting to understand an organization as though it were a person can offer insights into how organizations grow, develop, prosper, falter, and regenerate or decline. Several analogues are offered to be used as an addition to a consultant's approach in determining what is right and wrong with an organization in planning an appropriate intervention, if needed. The author suggests that a clinical sociologist has a role in promoting the health of organizations and in preventing problems, as well as in intervening to solve problems.

Eddy Formation On A Continental Slope, Janet M. Becker, Rick Salmon Jan 1997

Eddy Formation On A Continental Slope, Janet M. Becker, Rick Salmon

Journal of Marine Research

We consider a uniform-density ocean in which the depth-independent horizontal velocity is driven by a two-gyre wind. Numerical solutions of the governing vorticity equation reveal that the solutions with a flat ocean bottom differ greatly from those in which a continental shelf and slope are present along the western boundary. In the ocean basin with a western continental shelf, steady inertial circulations readily lose stability to unsteady inertial circulations that spawn eddies. However, eddies do not form in the corresponding solutions for the flat-bottom ocean. Reducing the friction leads to flat-bottom solutions that shed eddies far offshore, but still differ …

Solitary Rossby Waves With Baroclinic Modes, Z. Kizner Jan 1997

Solitary Rossby Waves With Baroclinic Modes, Z. Kizner

Journal of Marine Research

A class of exact solutions of the equation of conservation of the quasi-geostrophic vorticity in a continuously stratified ocean on the β-plane is studied. These are stationary solitary waves traveling east and having horizontal scale comparable with the Rossby deformation radius, which exist due to the balance between the nonlinearity and β-effect. The solutions look like a sum of a barotropic modon and a number of axially symmetric baroclinic components. The baroclinicity, represented in the form of vertical normal modes, introduces an extra “degree of freedom” into the problem (as compared with the barotropic model) and allows for the construction …

Analysis Of Diel Variability In Chlorophyll Fluorescence, John Marra Jan 1997

Analysis Of Diel Variability In Chlorophyll Fluorescence, John Marra

Journal of Marine Research

Examples of the diel variability in chlorophyll and beam attenuation are presented using data from moored in situ fluorometers and transmissometers, and from profiles of the beam attenuation coefficient and fluorescence. The data are discussed in terms of the three primary processes thought to influence the diel variability in chlorophyll: (1) fluorescence yield per unit chlorophyll a, (2) chlorophyll a changes per cell (or, carbon), and (3) changes in phytoplankton carbon (growth). A simple, provisional, model is presented which incorporates these three biological processes, under the assumption that the corresponding diel variability in particle attenuation represents the change in …

A One-Dimensional Physical-Biological Model Study Of The Pelagic Nitrogen Cycling During The Spring Bloom In The Northern North Sea (Flex ‘76), Wilfried Kuhn, Günther Radach Jan 1997

A One-Dimensional Physical-Biological Model Study Of The Pelagic Nitrogen Cycling During The Spring Bloom In The Northern North Sea (Flex ‘76), Wilfried Kuhn, Günther Radach

Journal of Marine Research

A one-dimensional model of the pelagic ecosystem was developed and applied to the spring bloom in the northern North Sea making use of the data set obtained during the Fladenground experiment FLEX '76. The physical submodel is the second-order turbulence closure model of level 2 type developed by Mellor and Yamada (1974, 1982). The biological submodel is a depth-resolved version of the nitrogen flux model of the lower trophic levels in the pelagic proposed by Fasham et al. (1990). The parameter set employed by Fasham et al. did not yield satisfying results. However, using a parameter set adapted …

On The Development Of Thermohaline Correlations As A Result Of Nonlinear Diffusive Parameterizations, Raffaele Ferrari, W. R. Young Jan 1997

On The Development Of Thermohaline Correlations As A Result Of Nonlinear Diffusive Parameterizations, Raffaele Ferrari, W. R. Young

Journal of Marine Research

Some oceanographic mixing parameterizations assume that transports depend nonlinearly on the buoyancy gradient; e.g., diffusivities are proportional to some power of the buoyancy gradient. In this paper we examine the consequences of these nonlinear-diffusion parameterizations by solving an initial value problem in which the t = 0 thermohaline fields are prepared as random and uncorrelated distributions of temperature and salinity. Solutions of the nonlinear diffusion equation as a ‘rundown’ problem show that correlations develop between the temperature and salinity. These correlations are such that the evolving thermohaline gradients tend to be strongly compensating in their joint effect on buoyancy.

Parameterization Of Mesoscale Eddy Fluxes In Zonal Ocean Flows, Vladimir O. Ivchenko, Kelvin J. Richards, Bablu Sinha, Jörg-Olaf Wolff Jan 1997

Parameterization Of Mesoscale Eddy Fluxes In Zonal Ocean Flows, Vladimir O. Ivchenko, Kelvin J. Richards, Bablu Sinha, Jörg-Olaf Wolff

Journal of Marine Research

Quasi-geostrophic dynamics in an eddy-resolving zonal re-entrant channel in the Southern Hemisphere have been studied for east- and westward wind forcing scenarios. The main difference is seen in the zonally averaged velocity profiles. In the case of eastward forcing, transient eddies strongly intensify the flow in the channel center into a jet, a feature totally absent in the westward forcing cases. The free jet is associated with a five times higher available potential energy compared to the westward flow. We have used these two distinctly different flow regimes to investigate possible parameterizations of the eddy fluxes in both situations. Parameterizations …

Circulation Around Islands And Ridges, Joseph Pedlosky, Lawrence J. Pratt, Michael A. Spall, Karl R. Helfrich Jan 1997

Circulation Around Islands And Ridges, Joseph Pedlosky, Lawrence J. Pratt, Michael A. Spall, Karl R. Helfrich

Journal of Marine Research

The circulation in an ocean basin containing an island is studied under nearly geostrophic, beta plane dynamics. The model is a fluid of uniform density driven by wind forcing or sources and sinks of mass at the upper boundary of the flow. The circulation is studied analytically, numerically, as well as in the laboratory through the device of the “sliced cylinder” model for the ocean circulation. Of particular interest is the estimate of the transport between the island and the oceanic basin's boundary. The model is conceived as relevant to both the wind-driven circulation as well as the circulation of …

Eastern South Dakota Wetlands, Rex R. Johnson, Kenneth F. Higgins, Michael L. Kjellsen, Charles R. Elliot Jan 1997

Eastern South Dakota Wetlands, Rex R. Johnson, Kenneth F. Higgins, Michael L. Kjellsen, Charles R. Elliot

Natural Resource Management Faculty Books

Diverse and extensive wetland resources have always been familiar parts of the landscape to farmers, hunters, and residents of eastern South Dakota. The journals and oral histories of adventurers, trappers, and natives and immigrants reveal how wetlands shaped the wildlife and the people who lived on and modified the land to meet their own needs. The history of South Dakota wetlands parallels the history and interactions of people and wetlands elsewhere in North America and the world. This interaction can best be characterized as constant conflict. Driven primarily by economics, farmers the world over expended tremendous energy to "reclaim" and …

Combinatorics Of Open Covers (Iii): Games, CP(X), Marion Scheepers Jan 1997

Combinatorics Of Open Covers (Iii): Games, CP(X), Marion Scheepers

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Some of the covering properties of spaces as defined in Parts I and II are here characterized by games. These results, applied to function spaces Cp(X) of countable tightness, give new characterizations of countable fan tightness and countable strong fan tightness. In particular, each of these properties is characterized by a Ramseyan theorem.

Atomic And Electronic Structures Of Neutral And Charged Boron And Boron-Rich Clusters, J. Niu, B. K. Rao, P. Jena Jan 1997

Atomic And Electronic Structures Of Neutral And Charged Boron And Boron-Rich Clusters, J. Niu, B. K. Rao, P. Jena

Physics Publications

Ab initio molecular orbital theory based on both density functional formalism and quantum chemical methods has been used to calculate the equilibrium geometries, binding energies, ionization potentials, fragmentation patterns, and electronic structures of neutral and charged boron clusters containing up to six atoms. Calculations have also been performed on restricted geometries for BnX (n=1,5,12; X=Be, B, C) and B20 clusters to see if clusters can be designed so as to increase their stability. Energetics of doubly chargedB++n clusters have also been studied to find the critical size for Coulomb explosion. The results are compared with existing experimental and theoretical data.

Wavelet Transforms In Generalized Fock Spaces, John Schmeelk, Arpad Takaci Jan 1997

Wavelet Transforms In Generalized Fock Spaces, John Schmeelk, Arpad Takaci

Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Publications

A generalized Fock space is introduced as it was developed by Schmeelk [1-5], also Schmeelk and Takači [6-8]. The wavelet transform is then extended to this generalized Fock space. Since each component of a generalized Fock functional is a generalized function, the wavelet transform acts upon the individual entry much the same as was developed by Mikusinski and Mort [9] based upon earlier work of Mikusinski and Taylor [10]. It is then shown that the generalized wavelet transform applied to a member of our generalized Fock space produces a more appropriate functional for certain appfications.

A Concurrent Validity Study Of The Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test And The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale - Revised, Kimberly D. Rayburn Jan 1997

A Concurrent Validity Study Of The Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test And The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale - Revised, Kimberly D. Rayburn

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Kaufinan Brief Intelligence Test (K-BIT) as a valid screening instrument for the more comprehensive Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) was studied. Both assessment instruments were administered to 34 subjects referred to a private psychological practice as part of a requested battery of test. Each test produces a verbal score, nonverbal score and combined verbal and nonverbal score. Results indicate that each section of the K-BIT has a significant correlation to its WAIS-R counterpart. The correlation between the verbal scores, nonverbal scores and the combined scores of the two instruments were .87, .78, and .88, respectively. The K-BIT appears to …

An Approach To A Generalized Synthesis For 2-Halo-1,1-Diarylalkenes, Cheryll R. Roberts Jan 1997

An Approach To A Generalized Synthesis For 2-Halo-1,1-Diarylalkenes, Cheryll R. Roberts

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study was concerned with the development of a generalized synthesis of halogenated 1,1-diarylalkenes. The alkylation of 1,1-diphenylethylene was carried out by the addition of organolithium compounds (C Li, PhLi, t-BuLi, n-BuLi). N-bromo-succinimide (NBS) was used for bromination. The reaction forming triphenylbromo-ethylene gave the largest percent yield (93.6%). The reaction forming 2-bromo-3,3- dimethyl-l,l-dipheny1-1-butene resulted in a 38.1% yield. Each product structure was confirmed by proton and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance, and infrared spectroscopy.

Determination Of Selected Hydrocarbon Concentrations In Reformate Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy, Roy Roger Bledsoe Jr.

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Near infrared spectroscopy was used as a quantitative technique employing multiple linear regression and partial least squares regression for determining the concentration of hydrocarbon groups and individual hydrocarbons present in reformate, a refinery process stream. Models were generated for total aromatics, benzene, toluene, total xylenes and individual xylene isomers, ethylbenzene, total paraffins, n-hexane, n-heptane, total isoparaffins, isopentane, 2-methylhexane, total naphthenes, methylcyclopentane, and total olefins. Some models are being used with an on-line instrument to constantly monitor a reformate stream as it leaves the reforming unit, with a standard error of performance of 0.118 volume percent for the prediction …

Analytical Models For Vehicle/Gap Distribution On Automated Highway Systems, Jacob Tsao, Randolph W. Hall, Indrajit Chatterjee Jan 1997

Analytical Models For Vehicle/Gap Distribution On Automated Highway Systems, Jacob Tsao, Randolph W. Hall, Indrajit Chatterjee

Faculty Publications

Highway congestion has in recent years become a pervasive problem for urban and suburban areas alike. The concept of Automated Highway Systems is based on the belief that integration of sensing, communication, and control technologies into vehicles and highways can lead to a large improvement in capacity and safety without requiring a significant amount of additional highway right-of-way. A fundamental determinant of Automated Highway Systems capacity is the vehicle-following rule, the rule that governs the behavior of vehicles traveling along a common lane (e.g., the spacing between any two longitudinally adjacent vehicles). Vehicle following affects the longitudinal capacity (achievable flow …

Structural And Dynamical Uncertainties In Modelling Axisymmetric Elliptical Galaxies, Aaron J. Romanowsky, C. S. Kochanek Jan 1997

Structural And Dynamical Uncertainties In Modelling Axisymmetric Elliptical Galaxies, Aaron J. Romanowsky, C. S. Kochanek

Faculty Publications

Quantitative dynamical models of galaxies require deprojection of the observed surface brightness to determine the luminosity density of the galaxy. Existing deprojection methods for axisymmetric galaxies assume that a unique deprojection exists for any given inclination, even though the projected density is known to be degenerate to the addition of ‘konus densities’ that are invisible in projection. We develop a deprojection method based on linear regularization that can explore the range of luminosity densities that are statistically consistent with an observed surface brightness distribution. The luminosity density is poorly constrained at modest inclinations (i ≿ 30°), even in the limit …

Image Analysis Of Primary Bone-Derived Cells On Different Polystyrene Surfaces, R. M. Shelton, G. Landini Jan 1997

Image Analysis Of Primary Bone-Derived Cells On Different Polystyrene Surfaces, R. M. Shelton, G. Landini

Cells and Materials

The aim of the present study was to examine whether two different cell populations could be discerned using image analysis of a variety of morphological parameters on bacteriological and tissue culture polystyrene surfaces. Rat periosteal and osteoblast cultures were established on both polystyrene petri dishes and examined using phase contrast microscopy after one and two weeks before capturing digital images which were stored on a personal computer. The digital images were processed to identify the cell margins or perimeter, from which seven different morphological parameters were calculated using a program developed (by GL) for both the cell populations on the …

A One-Pass Algorithm For Accurately Estimating Quantiles For Disk-Resident Data, Khaled Alsabti, Sanjay Ranka, Vineet Singh Jan 1997

A One-Pass Algorithm For Accurately Estimating Quantiles For Disk-Resident Data, Khaled Alsabti, Sanjay Ranka, Vineet Singh

College of Engineering and Computer Science - Former Departments, Centers, Institutes and Projects

The '-quantile of an ordered sequence of data values is the element with rank ' \Theta n, where n is the total number of values. Accurate estimates of quantiles are required for the solution of many practical applications. In this paper, we present a new algorithm for estimating the quantile values for disk-resident data. Our algorithm has the following characteristics: (1) It requires only one pass over the data; (2) It is deterministic; (3) It produces good lower and upper bounds of the true values of the quantiles; (4) It requires no a priori knowledge of the distribution of the …

Semantics Vs. Syntax Vs. Computations: Machine Models For Type-2 Polynomial-Time Bounded Functionals, James S. Royer Jan 1997

Semantics Vs. Syntax Vs. Computations: Machine Models For Type-2 Polynomial-Time Bounded Functionals, James S. Royer

College of Engineering and Computer Science - Former Departments, Centers, Institutes and Projects

This paper investigates analogs of the Kreisel-Lacombe-Shoenfield Theorem in the context of the type-2 basic feasible functionals. We develop a direct, polynomial-time analog of effective operation in which the time bounding on computations is modeled after Kapron and Cook's scheme for their basic polynomial-time functionals. We show that if P = NP, these polynomial-time effective operations are strictly more powerful on R (the class of recursive functions) than the basic feasible functions. We also consider a weaker notion of polynomial-time effective operation where the machines computing these functionals have access to the computations of their procedural parameter, but not to …
