A Nested Watershed Study In The Kuparuk River Basin, Arctic Alaska: Streamflow, Scaling, And Drainage Basin Structure, James Patrick Mcnamara Apr 1997

A Nested Watershed Study In The Kuparuk River Basin, Arctic Alaska: Streamflow, Scaling, And Drainage Basin Structure, James Patrick Mcnamara

Theses (Unassigned)

The central hypothesis of this dissertation is that permafrost influences the form, function, and scaling of hydrologic and geomorphologic characteristics in the Kuparuk River basin in Northern Alaska. This problem was addressed using three approaches: field hydrologic studies, statistical scaling studies, and geomorphology studies using digital elevation models. Permafrost and snow exert significant controls on hydrologic processes in the Kuparuk River basin. Storm hydrographs show fast responses, long time lags, extended recessions, and high runoff/precipitation ratios. These features arise from the diminished storage capacity caused by permafrost. Summer storm flow compositions in the are dominated by old water, as is …

An Investigation Of Cusp Latitude Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Physics: A Time Series Analysis Approach, Curt A. Szuberla Apr 1997

An Investigation Of Cusp Latitude Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Physics: A Time Series Analysis Approach, Curt A. Szuberla

Theses (Unassigned)

The shocked solar wind plasma of the magnetosheath has direct access to the Earth's high-latitude ionosphere and upper atmosphere only through the magnetospheric cusps. The interaction of solar and terrestrial plasmas and fields in these regions has made them an obvious choice for the study of coupling processes in the geospace environment. Some of the information regarding these processes is manifest in the transmission and generation of wave energy, a portion of which can be detected by ground-based magnetometers. In the present day, records of the magnetic field are stored in a digital format; therefore, some form of signal processing …

The Mass Balance And The Flow Of A Polythermal Glacier, Mccall Glacier, Brooks Range, Alaska, Bernhard Theodor Rabus Apr 1997

The Mass Balance And The Flow Of A Polythermal Glacier, Mccall Glacier, Brooks Range, Alaska, Bernhard Theodor Rabus

Theses (Unassigned)

Studies of surface motion and geometry, ice thickness, and mass balance were carried out on the arctic McCall Glacier. They revealed characteristic processes of glacier flow and mass balance that independently reflect the polythermal temperature regime of the glacier, which consists of cold ice except for a discontinuous layer of temperate ice at the base. Analysis of the present flow of McCall Glacier showed the longitudinal stress coupling length to be significantly larger than on temperate glaciers. This is a consequence of the smaller mass balance gradients and associated lower strain rates of arctic glaciers. Furthermore, flow analysis suggests year-round …

Physiological Adaptations For Overwintering By The Black-Capped Chickadee (Parus Atricapillus) In Interior Alaska (64 Degrees North Latitude), Susan Marie Sharbaugh Apr 1997

Physiological Adaptations For Overwintering By The Black-Capped Chickadee (Parus Atricapillus) In Interior Alaska (64 Degrees North Latitude), Susan Marie Sharbaugh

Biological Sciences

Winter in interior Alaska (64$\sp\circ$N) is characterized by short photoperiod (LD 5:19) and chronic subfreezing temperatures. These conditions present a physiological challenge to overwintering animals. This challenge increases as body size decreases. In small animals, higher surface to volume ratio and concomitant higher mass-specific metabolic rate (compared to larger animals) vastly increase energetic demand. This thesis focuses on the physiological adaptations of the smallest (12 g) overwintering bird in interior Alaska, the Black-capped Chickadee (Parus atricapillus). To determine if seasonal acclimatization of Black-capped Chickadees at high latitude differs from that of conspecifics at lower latitudes, standard metabolic rates (SMR), metabolic …

Neural Control Of Singing In The Dark-Eyed Junco (Junco Hyemalis), Cynthia Corbitt Gulledge Apr 1997

Neural Control Of Singing In The Dark-Eyed Junco (Junco Hyemalis), Cynthia Corbitt Gulledge

Biological Sciences

This dissertation includes several discrete projects addressing various aspects of the neural control of singing in the Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), a migratory songbird. I collected the birds from a local wild population during the breeding season and migration. Chapter 2 addresses the role of testosterone in controlling volumes of the brain regions that control song learning and song production (vocal control regions, VCRs), which grow and shrink seasonally and are correlated with changes in singing behavior. I found that: the role testosterone plays may depend on the age of the bird and the brain region in question. Expanding on …

Production Of Vascular Aquatic Plants In Wetlands Of Alaska: A Comparative Study, Amy Sophia Larsen Apr 1997

Production Of Vascular Aquatic Plants In Wetlands Of Alaska: A Comparative Study, Amy Sophia Larsen

Biological Sciences

I examined the effects of climate and hydrology on aboveground biomass of macrophytes in wetlands across Alaska by investigating the effects of latitude, July mean air temperature, lake type (open, periodically inundated, and closed), hydrology, and water and sediment chemistry on emergent and submersed vascular plant biomass to determine environmental variables that influenced wetland plant growth. I sampled aboveground biomass of macrophytes in four wetland complexes within Alaska: Kenai and Tetlin National Wildlife Refuges, Minto Flats State Game Refuge, and the Arctic Coastal Plain near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. In addition to peak aboveground biomass, I also collected water and sediment …

Paleoecology And Ecomorphology Of The Giant Short-Faced Bear In Eastern Beringia, Paul Edward Matheus Apr 1997

Paleoecology And Ecomorphology Of The Giant Short-Faced Bear In Eastern Beringia, Paul Edward Matheus

Biological Sciences

The short-faced bear (Arctodus simus) was a widespread Tremarctine bear indigenous to North America until its extinction around 11,500 BP. Arctodus inhabited Pleistocene ice-free refugia in Eastern Beringia (the northwestern limit of its range) until at least 20,000 BP. Because of its gracile, long-legged build and extremely large size, most paleontologists believe this bear was a high-speed pursuit predator which had preyed on the largest herbivores of Pleistocene North America. Alternatively, energetic arguments have been used to suggest that Arctodus was too large to be carnivorous and evolved its large size within an herbivorous or omnivorous niche. To test these …

Centralized Goal Formation And Systemic Reform: Reflections On Liberty, Localism And Pluralism, Kenneth A. Strike

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This paper asks whether there are reasonable concerns about liberty raised by standards driven systemic reform. Part I explores three kinds of concerns, students' interests in autonomy and authenticity, academic freedom, and pluralism. Part II explores two ways of conceptualizing the balance between liberty and various public interests, neo-classical economics and contemporary conservative thought. ...

The Economic Rationale Of A Multi-State Lotto, Brett Roush '97 Apr 1997

The Economic Rationale Of A Multi-State Lotto, Brett Roush '97

Honors Projects

First, lotteries offer an opportunity to study how consumers react to straightforward risky situations. Other forms of risk-taking--investing in the stock market, for example--or even many forms of gambling--handicapping horses, for example--do not offer the simplistic situation posed by lotteries. These instruments involve nothing more than a small payment followed by a purely random determination of winner and losers. The potential winnings, moreover, can range from the nugatory (a free ticket) to the awe-inspiring (in July of 1993 the Powerball jackpot reached $110 million). Besides gaining insights into consumer behavior in risky situations, lottery research is important for public policy …

Magnetic Hardening In Fept Nanostructured Films, J. Ping Liu, Yi Liu, C.P. Luo, Z.S. Shan Apr 1997

Magnetic Hardening In Fept Nanostructured Films, J. Ping Liu, Yi Liu, C.P. Luo, Z.S. Shan

David Sellmyer Publications

FePt films have been prepared by sputtering Fe/Pt multilayers onto glass or silicon substrates. The thickness of the Fe and Pt layers was adjusted with the Fe:Pt atomic ratio from about 1:1 to 2:1. Magnetic hardening is observed after heat treatment at elevated temperatures, which led to coercivity values exceeding 20 kOe in samples with an Fe:Pt ratio around 1.2:1. The hardening originates from the formation of the tetragonal FePt phase with high magnetocrystalline anisotropy and a favorable microstructure. Two-phase composite films containing hard and soft phases were obtained when the Fe:Pt ratio increased. Under optimized processing conditions, composite films …

David Sellmyer Publications

The technique of "field sweep-rate dependence of coercivity" together with the delta-M curves, transmission electron microscopy, and media noise measurement have been employed to reveal the correlation among the magnetic switching volume, physical grain size, intergrain interaction, and noise properties. The switching volume for both CoCrTa and CoCrPtTa films was found to be ~ 15 nm in diameter, and weakly dependent on grain size and coercivity for the systems studied. In films with physical grain size larger than the switching volume, strong intergrain interaction and high media noise is observed. In films with the physical grain size close to the …

Metamagnetic Domains And Dynamic Fluctuations In Febr2, O. Petracic, Christian Binek, Wolfgang Kleeman Apr 1997

Metamagnetic Domains And Dynamic Fluctuations In Febr2, O. Petracic, Christian Binek, Wolfgang Kleeman

Christian Binek Publications

The mixed phase and the regime of non-critical fluctuations of the magnetic phase diagram of FeBr2 is investigated by SQUID susceptometry and light diffraction techniques. The experiments seem to evidence instability of the tricritical point as conjectured recently. The observation of stripe domains and light diffraction below and above Tm = 4.6 K and the virtual continuation of the phase transition line to above Tm are in agreement with the occurrence of a critical endpoint at Tm and of a bicritical endpoint at T > Tm. ©1997 American Institute of Physics.

Nanostructure And Magnetic Anisotropy Of Co/Au Multilayers, Yi Liu, Z.S. Shan, David J. Sellmyer Apr 1997

Nanostructure And Magnetic Anisotropy Of Co/Au Multilayers, Yi Liu, Z.S. Shan, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Multilayer Co/Au films were deposited on 40 nm Au underlayer by magnetron sputtering. The Co thickness is kept constant at 0.5 nm while the Au thickness is varied from 0.5 to 8 nm. Magnetic measurements show that the perpendicular anisotropy of the films changes from 3 × 106 to 1.5 × 106 erg/cm3 as the Au thickness changes from 6 to 1 nm. Two films of (Co 0.5 nm/Au 6 nm) × 9/Au 40 nm (denoted Au6) and (Co 0.5 nm/Au 1 nm) × 50/Au 40 nm (denoted Au1) were examined by transmission electron microscopy. For the …

Las Vegas Wash Water Quality Monitoring Program: 1996 Report Of Findings, Richard A. Roline, James J. Sartoris, U.S. Bureau Of Reclamation, U.S. Geological Survey

Publications (WR)

Las Vegas Wash, a natural wash east of the city of Las Vegas, Nevada, carries stormwater, groundwater drainage, and sewage effluent from three sewage treatment plants to Lake Mead. The Wash provides nearly the only surface water outlet for the entire 2,193 mi2 of Las Vegas Valley. A drainage area of 1,586 mi2 contributes directly to the Wash through surface flow which is channeled to Las Vegas Bay of Lake Mead, while drainage of the remaining 607 mi2 is presumably subsurface and may drain toward Las Vegas Wash.

In the 1930's and 1940's, sewage treatment plants were …
