Supremum Distribution Of Gaussian Processes And Queueing Analysis Including Long-Range Dependence And Self-Similarity, Jinwoo Choe, Ness B. Shroff Dec 1997

Supremum Distribution Of Gaussian Processes And Queueing Analysis Including Long-Range Dependence And Self-Similarity, Jinwoo Choe, Ness B. Shroff

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this report we study the supremum distribution of a general class of Gaussian processes {Xt : t 2 0) having stationary increments. This distribution is directly related to the steady state queue length distribution of a queueing system, and hence its study is also important for various applications including communication network analysis. Our study is based on Extreme Value Theory and we show that log P({s~p~X:>t ~> x)) + asymptotically grows at most (on the order of) log x, where m, corresponds to the reciprocal of the maximum (normalized) variance of Xt. This result is considerably stronger than …

Preliminary Investigation Of The Extent And Effects Of Sediment Contamination In White Lake Near Whitehall Leather Tannery, Richard Rediske, Gary Fahnenstiel, Tom Nalepa, Peter Meier, Claire Schelske

Scientific Technical Reports

By using a combination of chemistry, toxicological evaluation, ecological analysis, and radiodating, this investigation has defined the ecological effects and the nature and extent of sediment contamination in the Tannery Bay area of eastern White Lake. The sediments in Tannery Bay represent a source of chromium transport for most of the eastern basin of White Lake. The recent deposition of chromium contaminated sediments exceeding 500 mg/kg in down gradient locations shows that export processes are responsible for the movement of this material from Tannery Bay. Arsenic and mercury appear to be less mobile and are retained in the sediments of …

Bound Μ⁺Μˉ System, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Gerhard Soff, Vladimir G. Ivanov, Savely Karshenboim

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider the hyperfine structure, the atomic spectrum, and the decay channels of the bound μ+μ- system (dimuonium). The annihilation lifetimes of low-lying atomic states of the system lie in the 10-12 s range. The decay rates could be measured by detection of the decay products (high-energy photons or electron-positron pairs). The hyperfine-structure splitting of the dimuonic system and its decay rate are influenced by electronic vacuum polarization effects in the far timelike asymptotic region. This constitutes a previously unexplored kinematic regime. We evaluate next-to-leading-order radiative corrections to the decay rate of low-lying atomic states. We …

Freezing Of Confined Water: A Bilayer Ice Phase In Hydrophobic Nanopores, Kenichiro Koga, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Hideki Tanaka Dec 1997

Freezing Of Confined Water: A Bilayer Ice Phase In Hydrophobic Nanopores, Kenichiro Koga, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Hideki Tanaka

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the phase behavior of a thin film of water confined to a slit nanopore with smooth walls. A first-order water-to-ice freezing transition has been observed. The resulting ice, which is a crystal of bilayer consisting of rows of distorted hexagons, does not resemble any ice crystals found so far. The confined water contracts upon freezing when the confinement load is low ( ∼0.5 kbar) and expands when the load is high (10 kbar). The residual entropy of the bilayer ice can be calculated exactly, which is about half of the entropy of the …

Evolution Of The Schistosomes (Digenea: Schistosomatoidea): The Origin Of Dioecy And Colonization Of The Venous System, Thomas R. Platt, Daniel R. Brooks Dec 1997

Evolution Of The Schistosomes (Digenea: Schistosomatoidea): The Origin Of Dioecy And Colonization Of The Venous System, Thomas R. Platt, Daniel R. Brooks

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Trematodes of the family Schistosomatidae are considered venous system specialists whose sister group is the vascular system generalists (Spirorchidae) of turtles. Colonization of homeotherms by vascular trematodes required precision egg laying near the conduit for egg passage to the external environment and avoidance of pathogenesis that might result in the premature death of the host. Evolution of dioecy from the hermaphroditic condition may have proceeded through androdioecy in which hermaphrodites were specialized for precision egg placement in the vascular system and larger adults became functional males. The evolution of nuclear genes suppressing female function along with cytoplasmic genes suppressing male …

This project describes the design, construction and testing of this scintillation detector. The K detector was designed to augment an existing detector stack at IUCF, and will serve to increase the energy range of previous studies of neutral pion production in proton-proton collisions near threshold. The test data for the current project came from a proton-proton scattering experiment, during which several runs were carried out between the bombarding …

Laboratory Comparison Of Trench Design Options For Recovering Spilled Oil, Renuka Fernando Dec 1997

Laboratory Comparison Of Trench Design Options For Recovering Spilled Oil, Renuka Fernando

Masters Theses

The research goal was to improve the performance of drainage trenches used to recover spilled oil in the subsurface. Different trench designs were compared in two laboratory experiments. The first laboratory experiment clearly demonstrates that the performance of a oil recovering drainage trench could be improved by replacing the standard gravel pack sand used around the drain pipe with mixtures of teflon and sand. The effectiveness of a downgradient impermeable 'backstop' also was studied in the first experiment.

In experiment two, four trench designs were compared: perforated drain pipe; wire-wrapped horizontal well screen; perforated sheet pile; and gravel fill with …

A Comparison Study Of Water Well Grouting Materials, Sherry L. Callaway Dec 1997

A Comparison Study Of Water Well Grouting Materials, Sherry L. Callaway

Masters Theses

To prevent contamination from occurring in water wells, and thereby groundwater, the annulus between the well casing and borehole wall must be sealed with a grout that is capable of maintaining a proper seal. Several factors and properties determine the integrity of the grout and the seal formed by that grout.

A field study discovered limitations in all of the tested grout types. Most grouts were found to vary greatly in thickness surrounding the well casing. Bentonite slurry grouts settled excessively. Cement and bentoni tecement grouts did not adhere to PVC well casing. Bentonite-cement grout fractured. The granulated bentonite was …

Elucidation Of The Pathway Required For The Stimulation Of G6pdh Gene Expression By Insulin And Its Mimetics, Asavari Wagle Dec 1997

Elucidation Of The Pathway Required For The Stimulation Of G6pdh Gene Expression By Insulin And Its Mimetics, Asavari Wagle

Masters Theses

Insulin, an anabolic hormone, exquisitely controls cellular physiology and metabolism by modulating the activity of key proteins which regulate metabolic and mitogenic events. Insulin activates several cytosolic proteins via a phosphorylation cascade, but only some of these proteins are required for its specific action. We have elucidated the insulin signal transduction cascade in primary rat hepatocytes, and outlined some of the events that are required for the insulin induced stimulation of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) gene expression. Using well-characterized and structurally different inhibitors, we show that insulin stimulation of the gene requires the IRS-1/P13K pathway and not the RAS/RAF/MAPK pathway. Gene …

Lithologic And Stratigraphic Analysis Of Glacial Diamictons, Sturgis, Michigan, R. Christopher Gardner Dec 1997

Lithologic And Stratigraphic Analysis Of Glacial Diamictons, Sturgis, Michigan, R. Christopher Gardner

Masters Theses

Seven diamictons are identified in the subsurface glacial drift near Sturgis, Michigan using textural analyses and x-ray diffraction of clay minerals. The clay mineral content is quantified by comparing the 7-A/10- A peak height ratios from x-ray diffraction diffractograms of oriented clay-size particle (< 2um) mounts. Two diamictons occur at the base of the drift. Unit 1 is gray , resembling the shale it overlies. The texture of Unit 1 is sandy clay loam to loam and average 7-A/10-A peak height clay mineral ratios of 0.446 ±0.069. Unit 2 is a yellowish-brown diamicton, it overlies Unit 1, and is a sandy loam to loam with average 7-A/10-A clay mineral ratio of 0.657 ±0.151. Diamicton Units 4 and 5 overlie a thick unit of sand and gravel on top of Unit 2. Units 4 and 5 have similar color and texture, however the 7-A/10-A ratios are 1.059 ±0.090 and 0.810 ±0.072 respectively. Unit 6 is a thin diamicton unit, leached of calcite, and x-ray diffraction suggests that there is a range of weathering horzins between borings. Unit 7 is loamy, whereas Unit 8 generally ranges from sandy clay loam to sandy loam with average 7-A/10-A ratios of 0.865 ±0.090 and 1.195 ±0.189.

The Effect Of Data Model, System And Task Characteristics On User Query Performance – An Empirical Study, Hock Chan, Keng Siau, Kwok-Kee Wei

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the proliferation of end-user computing and empowerment of end users in the organizations, the user-database interface is increasingly being recognized as an important research area. A user-database interface consists of two key components: the data model and the query language. Database management system designers can manipulate these two components to produce an effective database interface to maximize user task performance. However, in order to do this, the designers first need to know the effect of the two components on end users and the interaction effect of the two components. Despite the acknowledgment of user-database interface as a cornerstone in …

Determination Of A Flexibility Range For Cellular Manufacturing Systems Under Product Mix Variations, Hamid Seifoddini, Manocher Djassemi Dec 1997

Determination Of A Flexibility Range For Cellular Manufacturing Systems Under Product Mix Variations, Hamid Seifoddini, Manocher Djassemi

Industrial Technology and Packaging

One of the underlying assumptions in cellular manufacturing is that product mix is relatively stable over time. In this paper, a procedure for the sensitivity analysis of the performance of a cellular manufacturing system with respect to changes in the product mix is presented and a flexibility range representing the capability of the system in dealing with these changes is determined using simulation modelling. The simulation results in this study show that as the changes in the product mix increase the superiority of the performance of the cellular manufacturing system to the corresponding job shop system diminishes.
