Evaluation Of Continuous Flow Constructed Wetlands Treating Swine Waste, Stephanie Rivard May 1997

Evaluation Of Continuous Flow Constructed Wetlands Treating Swine Waste, Stephanie Rivard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The ability for wetlands to purify contaminated water is not a new concept. Natural wetlands have been cleansing water within our environment for ages. After studying the process of natural wetlands the same concept was applied to municipal waste. It is the success of constructed wetlands treating municipal waste that created the new idea for the application of a wetland system to treat wastewater from livestock facilities. Through proper design and management, constructed wetlands may be useful for reducing the nutrient concentration of waste (Rieck el al., 1996). Taking into consideration the higher nutrient loads of livestock waste, the same …

A Study Of Combustion Profiles Of Co-Fired Coal/Biomass/Limestone Samples In A Fluidized Bed Combustor, Beverly Campbell May 1997

A Study Of Combustion Profiles Of Co-Fired Coal/Biomass/Limestone Samples In A Fluidized Bed Combustor, Beverly Campbell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Concerns over declining landfill space and a renewed interest in waste-toenergy technologies have increased the possibilities of co-firing different types of fuels in atmospheric fluidized bed combustion systems. The laboratory sized atmospheric fluidized bed combustor (AFBC) at Western Kentucky University was designed to serve as a highly flexible research and development facility to gain operating experience, evaluate combustion performance, and estimate the effect of flue gas emissions on the atmosphere. The operating conditions for the AFBC system are similar to those used at the TVA 160-MW AFBC Pilot Plant located near Paducah, Kentucky. AFBC systems are ideal for co-firing because …

The Circulating Processor Model Of Parallel Systems, Amy Apon, Lawrence Dowdy May 1997

The Circulating Processor Model Of Parallel Systems, Amy Apon, Lawrence Dowdy

Publications

This paper introduces the circulating processor model for parallel computer systems. The circulating processor model is a product form queuing network model where the processors are allowed to circulate between the parallel applications instead of the more traditional circulating task model. Certain behaviors of parallel systems are better captured using this new approach. The circulating processor model may be load dependent or load dependent. The load dependent circulating processor model is exact for systems which contain a single parallel application. An exact error is calculated for the load independent circulating processor model for systems which contain a single parallel application. …

Was Newton's Calculus A Dead End? The Continental Influence Of Maclaurin's Treatise Of Fluxions, Judith V. Grabiner May 1997

Was Newton's Calculus A Dead End? The Continental Influence Of Maclaurin's Treatise Of Fluxions, Judith V. Grabiner

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

We will show that Maclaurin's Treatise of Fluxions did develop important ideas and techniques and that it did influence the mainstream of mathematics. The Newtonian tradition in calculus did not come to an end in Maclaurin's Britain. Instead, Maclaurin's Treatise served to transmit Newtonian ideas in calculus, improved and expanded, to the Continent. We will look at what these ideas were, what Maclaurin did with them, and what happened to this work afterwards. Then, we will ask what by then should be an interesting question: why has Maclaurin's role been so consistently underrated? Thse questions will involve general matters of …

Two-Spinon Dynamic Structure Factor Of The One-Dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet, Michael Karbach, Gerhard Müller, A. Hamid Bougourzi, Andreas Fledderjohann, Karl-Heinz Mütter May 1997

Two-Spinon Dynamic Structure Factor Of The One-Dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet, Michael Karbach, Gerhard Müller, A. Hamid Bougourzi, Andreas Fledderjohann, Karl-Heinz Mütter

Physics Faculty Publications

The exact expression derived by Bougourzi, Couture, and Kacir for the two-spinon contribution to the dynamic spin structure factor S(q, ω) of the one-dimensional s=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet at T=0 is evaluated for direct comparison with finite-chain transition rates (N<28) and an approximate analytical result previously inferred from finite-N data, sum rules, and Bethe ansatz calculations. The two-spinon excitations account for 72.89% of the total intensity in S(q, ω). The singularity structure of the exact result is determined analytically and its spectral-weight distribution evaluated numerically over the entire range of the two-spinon continuum. The leading singularities …

Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Newsletters and Publications

The Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre (CCWHC) was established in 1992 as an organization among Canada's 4 veterinary colleges, with a mandate to apply veterinary medicine to wildlife management and conservation in Canada. A major function of the CCWHC is nation-wide surveillance of wild animal diseases. Disease surveillance is conceived as consisting of 4 different activities: detection, diagnosis, information management, and use of information. In the CCWHC surveillance program, detection of disease is carried out by a wide range of professional and avocational field personnel, and much effort is expended to stimulate and support this activity. Diagnosis is done by …

Bmw Of North America, Inc. V. Gore: The Supreme Court Rejects A Punitive Damage Award On Due Process Grounds, Rob S. Register

Mercer Law Review

The Supreme Court of the United States has addressed the validity of punitive damages awards many times over the years, but until now has never overturned one based on a claim of excessiveness under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. BMW of North America, Inc. v. Gore is the first case in which the Court reversed and remanded a large punitive damage amount based on those grounds.

Studies Of Dictyostelium Discoideum Plasmid Ddp6 And On The Mechanism Of Action Of Rep Proteins From The Ddp2 Plasmid Family, Iman M. Shammat May 1997

Studies Of Dictyostelium Discoideum Plasmid Ddp6 And On The Mechanism Of Action Of Rep Proteins From The Ddp2 Plasmid Family, Iman M. Shammat

Biology

Dictyostelium discoideum plasmid Ddp6 from the wild strain NC47.2 is a 5257 bp nuclear plasmid with a copy number of 200-300 per cell. Analysis of the nucleotide sequence and structural organization of the Ddp6 plasmid has identified it as a new member of the Ddp2 plasmid family. Ddp6 contains a single gene that is homologous to the rep gene of Ddp2. As with Ddp2, a single constitutively expressed transcript of 3.3 kb was detected from the rep gene. The Ddp6 Rep open reading frame of 2.8 kb encodes a protein of 932 amino acids. A set of 10 conserved peptide …

We report γ-ray detection performance measurements and computer simulations of a sub-millimeter pitch CdZnTe strip detector. The detector is a prototype for γ-ray measurements in the range of 20-600 keV. The prototype is a 1.5 mm thick, 64×64 orthogonal stripe CdZnTe detector of 0.375 mm pitch in both dimensions, with approximately one square inch of sensitive area. Using discrete laboratory electronics to process signals from an 8×8 stripe region of the prototype we measured good spectroscopic uniformity and sub-pitch (~0.2 mm) spatial resolution in both x and y dimensions. We present below measurements of the spatial uniformity, relative timing and …

Thermal Decomposition Reactions Of Acetaldehyde And Acetone On Si(100), J.L. Armstrong, J.M. White, Marjorie Langell May 1997

Thermal Decomposition Reactions Of Acetaldehyde And Acetone On Si(100), J.L. Armstrong, J.M. White, Marjorie Langell

Marjorie A. Langell Publications

We have studied the thermal interactions of acetone and acetaldehyde on Si(100), both sputtered and annealed, using high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, (HREELS), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). There is no carbonyl stretch in HREELS and the C and O(1s) XPS peaks reflect two different carbonyl processes, one involving bond cleavage, the other a reduction of the C–O bond order. Hydrogen TPD gives a peak at 840–850 K which is as much as threefold more intense than from H-saturated Si(100). SiO desorbs near 1050 K and XPS shows total loss of oxygen and …

The Geomorphic Basis Of Colorado Squawfish Nursery Habitat In The Green River Near Ouray, Utah, Cynthia L. Rakowski May 1997

The Geomorphic Basis Of Colorado Squawfish Nursery Habitat In The Green River Near Ouray, Utah, Cynthia L. Rakowski

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nursery habitat availability is considered a bottleneck to successful recruitment of Colorado squawfish (Ptychocheilus Lucius). Detailed geomorphic studies were conducted in a 1.5-km reach to examine channel response to flows and the geomorphic setting of nursery habitats during a 2-year period. Videography was used to extend relationships in the 1.5-km reach to a longer 10-km reach.

Nursery habitat availability varied yearly with little persistence in location or geomorphic setting of individual habitats for the 2 years of this study. A small number of habitats provided most of the area of high-quality (i.e., deep) habitat, and most of the …

Empirical Studies Of Ionospheric Electric Fields, Ludger Scherliess May 1997

Empirical Studies Of Ionospheric Electric Fields, Ludger Scherliess

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The first comprehensive study of equatorial- to mid-latitude ionospheric electric fields (plasma drifts) is presented, using extensive incoherent scatter radar measurements from Jicamarca, Arecibo, and Millstone Hill, and F-region ion drift meter data from the polar orbiting DE-2 satellite. Seasonal and solar cycle dependent empirical quiet-time electric field models from equatorial to mid latitudes are developed, which improve and extend existing climatological models. The signatures of electric field perturbations during geomagnetically disturbed periods, associated with changes in the high-latitude currents and the characteristics of storm-time dynamo electric fields driven by enhanced energy deposition into the high-latitude ionosphere, are studied. Analytical …

Differences In Creative Thinking Between American And Japanese College Students In Education, Noriko Saeki May 1997

Differences In Creative Thinking Between American And Japanese College Students In Education, Noriko Saeki

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Fifty-one American and 54 Japanese college students in education were tested to investigate whether there were any cross-cultural differences in creative thinking. No gender differences were found in both cultures, but the American college students had higher scores on the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT) figural test than the Japanese college students. The difference was statistically significant and the effect size was large. Very low correlations were found between the TTCT and the American 111 College Testing (ACT) for the American college students and between the TTCT and the Center Test for the Japanese college students.

Acculturation, Family Variables, And Cognition Of A Subgroup Of American Indian Children Ages 3-9, Michael Alan Cummings

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A study was conducted to examine the relationship between specific family variables and measures of cognitive abilities for preschool and young school-aged children of an American Indian ancestry. More specifically, the study used two cognitive measures, the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children and the Embedded Figures Test, and examined the influence that 23 family variables and cultural background (acculturation) had on measures of spatial abilities.

Past studies suggested that American Indian children, as a group, perform above the standardization sample on measures of visual-spatial skills, have higher simultaneous processing skills, and are more field independent. It was anticipated that at …

Geomorphology Of The Green River In Dinosaur National Monument, Paul E. Grams May 1997

Geomorphology Of The Green River In Dinosaur National Monument, Paul E. Grams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Longitudinal profile, channel cross-section geometry, and depositional patterns of the Green River in its course through the eastern Uinta Mountains are each strongly influenced by river-level geology and tributary sediment delivery processes. We surveyed channel cross sections at 1-km intervals, mapped surficial geology, and measured size and characteristics of bed material in order to evaluate the geomorphic organization of the 70- km study reach. Canyon reaches that are of high gradient and narrow channel geometry are associated with the most resistant lithologies exposed at river level and the most frequent occurrences of tributary debris fans. Meandering reaches that are characterized …

Geochemical, Petrologic, And Structural Characterization At Multiple Scales Of Deformation Associated With The Punchbowl Fault, Southern California, Steven E. Schulz May 1997

Geochemical, Petrologic, And Structural Characterization At Multiple Scales Of Deformation Associated With The Punchbowl Fault, Southern California, Steven E. Schulz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Three traverses across the exhumed trace of the Punchbowl fault zone in the Pelona Schist, southern California, were examined at the millimeter to kilometer scales to determine the morphology, deformation mechanisms, and geochemistry of the fault zone in schistose rocks. The Pelona Schist is predominantly a quartz-albite-muscovite-actinolite schist with associated minor metabasalts. The Punchbowl fault zone, which is exhumed 2-4 km, has 44 km of right lateral slip, and is composed of a fault core enveloped by a damaged zone.

The fault core is a region of extreme slip localization that records most fault displacement. Deformation in the fault core …

Quaternary Bear River Paleohydrogeography Reconstructed From The 87sr/86sr Composition Of Lacustrine Fossils, David P. Bouchard May 1997

Quaternary Bear River Paleohydrogeography Reconstructed From The 87sr/86sr Composition Of Lacustrine Fossils, David P. Bouchard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Diverted from its former course to the Pacific Ocean by basalt flows in Gem Valley, Idaho, the Bear River presently flows south into the Bonneville Basin. Constraining the timing of the river's diversion is pivotal to understanding the hydrologic budgets, and thus the climatological implications of the Bonneville Basin lakes. This study employs strontium (Sr) isotopes in mollusc fossils as a tracer of the Bear River water that entered Lake Thatcher, a small, closed-basin lake into which the redirected river flowed en route to the Bonneville Basin. The Sr ratios, combined with the temporal control afforded by amino acid geochronology …

A Hydrogeochemical Study Of The Evolution Of The Headwaters Of The Bear River In The Uinta Mountains, Utah, Michael F. Leschin May 1997

A Hydrogeochemical Study Of The Evolution Of The Headwaters Of The Bear River In The Uinta Mountains, Utah, Michael F. Leschin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The headwaters of the Bear River in the Uinta Mountains of Utah provide a good setting in which to examine the influence of geological materials on stream chemistry. Ionic contributions to the stream-water from soils, vegetation, and the atmosphere generally are sparse enough that they do not mask the geologic contributions. Samples from 37 sites on the four major headwater streams and several minor tributaries were examined geochemically. Data derived from the samples allowed the construction of a hydrogeochemical weathering model specific to the study area. A significant feature of this model is that carbonic acid is the dominant chemical …

Evaluation Of Translocation Criteria For Trumpeter Swans Reintroduced To Northern Utah: Habitat Quality And Interactions With Tundra Swans, Katharina A. M. Engelhardt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Fifty-seven Trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator) were translocated to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and the Bear River Club Company in northern Utah. The purpose of this effort was to encourage dispersal of the Rocky Mountain population of Trumpeter swans during the winter, and to reestablish a migratory route to southern wintering grounds. I assessed the success of the translocation by evaluating 13 translocation criteria proposed in the literature. In this study I addressed two of these criteria in detail by evaluating habitat quality at the translocation sites and by analyzing potential competitive interactions with Tundra swans ( …

Cenozoic Tectonic And Paleogeographic Evolution Of The Horse Prairie Half-Graben, Southwest Montana, Colby J. Vandenburg May 1997

Cenozoic Tectonic And Paleogeographic Evolution Of The Horse Prairie Half-Graben, Southwest Montana, Colby J. Vandenburg

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Horse Prairie basin (HPB) of southwestern Montana is a complex, east dipping half-graben that contains three angular unconformity-bounded sequences of Tertiary lacustrine, paludal, and fluvial sediments overlying middle Eocene volcanic rocks. The basin is near the eastern edge of the Cordilleran thrust belt, and represents the western half of a larger Paleogene rift basin. Geologic mapping within the Everson Creek and Bannock Pass 7.5 minute quadrangles indicates that five temporally and geometrically distinct episodes of extension characterize the late Mesozoic (?) to Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the upper HPB.

The first episode of extension occurred prior to emplacement of …
