A Study Of Personalized Systems Of Instruction For The Community College Student In Developmental Mathematics, Debra A. Wimer

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if the Urban Challenge Grant program, a modified "Personalized System of Instruction"(PSI) was more effective and efficient than the traditional lecture method of instruction for community college students testing into the lowest level of developmental mathematics. Students were separated into an experimental group (Urban Challenge Grant program) and a control group (traditional lecture method). Each group was given a New Jersey College Basic Skills Placement Test (NJCBSPT) pre-test. The experimental group, after one semester of instruction, was given the post-NJCBSPT. The control group students were given the post-NJCBSPT after 2 semesters of …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Publications

Organic dyes have found increasing use a s sensitizers in laser surgical procedures, due to their high optical absorbances. Little is known, however, about the nature of the degradation products formed when these dyes are irradiated with a laser. Previous work in our laboratories has shown that irradiation of polymeric and biological tissues with CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers produces a host of volatile and semivolatile by-products, some of which are known to be potential carcinogens. This work focuses on the identification of the chemical by-products formed by diode laser and Nd:YAG laser irradiation of indocyanine green (ICG) and carbon black …

On Some New Constructions Of Difference Sets, Sarah Agnes Spence May 1997

On Some New Constructions Of Difference Sets, Sarah Agnes Spence

Honors Theses

Difference sets are mathematical structures which arise in algebra and combinatorics, with applications in coding theory. The fundamental question is when and how one can construct difference sets. This largely expository paper looks at standard construction methods and describes recent findings that resulted in new families of difference sets. This paper provides explicit examples of difference sets that arise from the recent constructions. By gaining a thorough understanding of these new techniques, it may be possible to generalize the results to find additional new families of difference sets. The paper also introduces partial and relative difference sets and discusses how …

Paper Session Iii-A - Commercialization Of Ksc Instrumentation Developed To Improve Safety, Reliability, And Cost Effectiveness Of Space Shuttle Processing, Launch, And Landing, William R. Helms, Stanley O. Starr

Space Congress® Proceedings

The top priority at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is safety of the flight crew and Shuttle vehicle. This priority is followed by safety of the personnel and physical assets of KSC, and reducing the costs associated with processing the Shuttle and other flight components, driven by budget and down sizing pressures. The KSC Instrumentation Laboratories, managed and staffed by both civil service NASA personnel and by I-NET, the Engineering Support Contractor, help ensure the accomplishment of these priorities by adapting or developing technologies to improve operational safety and decrease processing costs. The Laboratories are organized by technical discipline into nine …

Paper Session Iii-D - Post Mission Utilization Of Satellites For College And Secondary Education, Melvin Degree, Said Hamilton

Space Congress® Proceedings

NASA is in a unique position to promote utilization of post mission satellites to provide college and secondary school educational opportunities in the mechanics and intricacies of space satellite operation. Many of NASA’s communication and scientific satellites are decommissioned after completion of their mission for various reasons, such as budgetary constraints, end of life expectancy, fulfillment of scientific mission or operational constraints. Therefore, it seems sensible to assess the feasibility of developing alternative applications for these satellite resources. In particular, there may be an opportunity to garner additional, long-term educational benefits from the utilization of such satellites.

NASA is studying …

Optimization And Spectrophotometric Comparisons Of Radiochromic Dye (2,3,5-Triphenyl-2-H-Tetrazolium Chloride) In Gelatin And Agar Models: Gamma And Electron Beam Irradiations, Lakindra P. Frances

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

After irradiation, the colorless radiochromic dye, 2,3,5-triphenyl-2H-tetrazolium chloride (TTC), changes to red triphenyl formazan pigment, and the distribution of absorbed dose in the tissue-equivalent gelatin and agar media can be studied. Using solutions 8% by weight gelatin and 8% by weight agar, both with 3 mM citric acid as buffer and 4 mM concentration of dye, the radiation-induced absorbency of a sample slowly decreased with increasing wavelength. In the gel, TTC is very light sensitive, and 7 days after irradiation, becomes less stable. The samples were irradicated by gamma and electron beam. Nine different doses were used for the 60 …

The Link Between Scrambling Numbers And Derangements, Barry Balof, Eric Farmer, Jamie Kawabata May 1997

The Link Between Scrambling Numbers And Derangements, Barry Balof, Eric Farmer, Jamie Kawabata

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

The group equation abcdef = dabecf can be reduced to the equation xcde = dxec. In general, we are interested in how many variables are needed to represent group equations in which the right side is a permutation of the variables on the left side. Scrambling numbers capture this information about a permutation. In this paper we present several facts about scrambling numbers, and expose a striking relationship between permutations that cannot be reduced and derangements.

An Investigation Into The Growing Popularity Of Script Typefaces And The Technical Means By Which They Are Created Today, Yacotzin Alva May 1997

An Investigation Into The Growing Popularity Of Script Typefaces And The Technical Means By Which They Are Created Today, Yacotzin Alva

Theses

The examination of any current type specimen book invariably discloses a large number of faces designed to imitate some form of handwriting. Strictly speaking, such designs are known as script types. It is a matter of opinion which typefaces should be classified as scripts, especially since all early type designs were derived from written forms. Today, we typically label a typeface as a script if it retains the look of having been written with a pen or other writing implement. Type specimen catalogues of the nineteenth century list numerous examples of such written forms, though these are mostly restricted to …
