Exotic Mesons In Quenched Lattice Qcd, James E. Hetrick, C. Bernard Dec 1997

Exotic Mesons In Quenched Lattice Qcd, James E. Hetrick, C. Bernard

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

Since gluons in QCD are interacting fundamental constituents just as quarks are, we expect that in addition to mesons made from a quark and an antiquark, there should also be glueballs and hybrids (bound states of quarks, antiquarks and gluons). In general, these states would mix strongly with the conventional q-bar-q mesons. However, they can also have exotic quantum numbers inaccessible to q-bar-q mesons. Confirmation of such states would give information on the role of "dynamical" color in low energy QCD. In the quenched approximation we present a lattice calculation of the masses of mesons with exotic quantum numbers. These …

On Multiple Solutions Of A Nonlinear Dirichlet Problem, Alfonso Castro, Jorge Cossio, John M. Neuberger

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We prove that a semilinear elliptic boundary value problem has five solutions when the range of the derivative of the nonlinearity includes at least the first two eigenvalues. We also prove that if the region is a ball the semilinear elliptic problem has two solutions that change sign and are nonradial.

A Study Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons During Combustion In An Afbc System, Laura Dicken Dec 1997

A Study Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons During Combustion In An Afbc System, Laura Dicken

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to develop the on-line method of analysis which leads to the study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during combustion in an atmospheric fluidized bed combustor (AFBC) system. The study of PAHs is important because they may be produced upon the combustion of coal. The US EPA prioritizes PAHs as major pollutants due to their mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. Standards of PAHs were analyzed by injection into the gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). These standards were then analyzed using the on-line method. Two coals were burned in the AFBC system and effluent samples were collected. These …

Fundamental Investigations Of Mechanistic Pathways Of Selected Organic Reactive Intermediates, Carl Whittle Dec 1997

Fundamental Investigations Of Mechanistic Pathways Of Selected Organic Reactive Intermediates, Carl Whittle

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Part 1 of this thesis deals with the role that it -electron density plays in the formation of it -complexes in electrophilic aromatic substitution. Using commercial and synthetic compounds of varying it-electron density, the fact that % -complexes actually exist in these species was determined by a mass spectral investigation that was designed to monitor alkyl side-chain isomerizaitons. Also, the amount of it-complex was determined for each compound by measuring the amount of alkyl carbenium ion loss in each compound's mass spectrum. Found within the systems was an internal trend showing that the greater the amount of 7t-electron density in …

Inhalation Toxicity Of (1→3)-Β-D-Glucan: Recent Advances, Birgitts Fogelmark, Margarets Sjöstrand, David Williams, Ragnar Rylander

ETSU Faculty Works

To investigate the effects of (1→3)-β-D-glucan after inhalation, animals were exposed to different forms of glucan and the number of lung lavage cells was determined 24 h after exposure. None of the different forms assayed caused any increase in cell numbers. In animals exposed to endotoxin, all types of cells were increased after 24 h. A simultaneous exposure to curdlan reduced this increase in a dose-related fashion. The results suggest that (1→3)-β-D-glucan-related acute injury to the lung is induced by mechanisms other than those induced by inflammagenic agents such as endotoxin.

Layout For Visualizing Large Software Structures In 3d, Colin Ware, Glenn Franck, Monica Parkhi, Tim Dudley Dec 1997

Layout For Visualizing Large Software Structures In 3d, Colin Ware, Glenn Franck, Monica Parkhi, Tim Dudley

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

There is increasing evidence that 3D visualization of complex structures has advantages over 2D visualization. While nested directed graphs are an important method of representing information in 2D or 3D, they must be effectively organized in order to be understood. Most work on graph layout has assumed that fully automatic layout is desirable. Through our work with graphs representing large software structures, we have found that, due to the importance of the semantic content, it is necessary to combine automatic layout with manual layout. This paper describes a system called GraphVisualizer3D, which was designed to help people understand large nested …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Microphysical properties of jet exhaust aerosol and contrails were studied in the near field of the emitting aircraft for different fuel sulfur contents. Measurements were performed behind two different aircraft (ATTAS test aircraft of type VFW 614 and Airbus A310-300) using fuels with sulfur contents of 6 ppm and 2700 ppm, respectively. At closest approach (plume age < 1 s), the total number concentrations exceeded the measuring range of the condensation particle counter, i.e., N > 105 cm-3. The concentration of the dry accumulation mode aerosol, i.e., predominantly soot particles, was not affected by the fuel sulfur content. At a plume age of 10 s, an increase in total number concentration (Dp > 0.01 μm) by a …

The Effects Of Trade Orientation And Human Capital On Total Factor Productivity, Stephen M. Miller, Mukti P. Upadhyay Dec 1997

The Effects Of Trade Orientation And Human Capital On Total Factor Productivity, Stephen M. Miller, Mukti P. Upadhyay

Economics Working Papers

We study the effects of trade orientation and human capital on total factor productivity for a pooled cross-section, time-series sample of developed and developing countries. We first estimate total factor productivity from a parsimonious specification of the aggregate production function involving output per worker, capital per worker, and the labor force, both with and without the stock of human capital. Then we consider a number of potential determinants of total factor productivity growth including several measures of trade orientation as well as a measure of human capital. We find that a high degree of openness benefits total factor productivity and …

From Doubt To Affirmation: Reflections On The Recent History Of Catholic Parochial Education, Timothy Walch Dec 1997

From Doubt To Affirmation: Reflections On The Recent History Of Catholic Parochial Education, Timothy Walch

Journal of Catholic Education

The author of a new history of parochial schools reviews the soul-searching that gripped Catholic education in the 1980s and shows how doubt and anxiety forced Catholic educators to face a simple but vital fact of life: As long as there are parents, pastors, and teachers interested in parochial education, these schools will survive and thrive. Even though American Catholic parochial education will never again attain the position of influence it had in the middle of the 20th century, parish schools will remain important education laboratories for the coming century.

Combining Multi-Attribute Utility And Geographic Information For Boundary Decisions: An Application To Park Planning, Jeffrey Keisler, Ronald Sundell Dec 1997

Combining Multi-Attribute Utility And Geographic Information For Boundary Decisions: An Application To Park Planning, Jeffrey Keisler, Ronald Sundell

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

The quality and value of an area depend primarily on what is found within its designated boundaries. To determine the value of such areas in terms of boundaries, we have developed a methodology for integrating multi-attribute utility functions with spatial analysis so that desirable, or appropriate, boundaries can be determined on the basis of the goals and objectives for the park. The key to successful evaluation is the development of measures for what decision makers value, rather than merely using what is easily measured. In a detailed example for planning of national parks, the fundamental objectives are conservation and societal …

A New Dynamic Mechanism Of Topological Charge Creation In A Commensurate One-Dimensional Charge Density Wave Near The Contact With A Normal Metal, A. S. Rozhavsky, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, A. S. Kovalev Dec 1997

A New Dynamic Mechanism Of Topological Charge Creation In A Commensurate One-Dimensional Charge Density Wave Near The Contact With A Normal Metal, A. S. Rozhavsky, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, A. S. Kovalev

Faculty Publications

The dynamics of conversion of conduction electrons into topological solitons of a charge density wave (CDW) commensurability in an external electric field is investigated. A novel mechanism of initiation of a nonlinear CDW current in the vicinity of the interface between a CDW and a normal metal is revealed and explained. The nonlinear current is produced by the conduction solitons created by the moving profile of the order parameter, formed during the conversion of electrons into collective phase excitations of a CDW. The field dependence of the current is of threshold nature and has no analogs in the bulk mechanisms …

Data Assimilation Experiments In The Gulf Stream Region: How Useful Are Satellite-Derived Surface Data For Nowcasting The Subsurface Fields?, Tal Ezer, George L. Mellor

CCPO Publications

Satellite-derived surface data have become an important source of information for studies of the Gulf Stream system. The question of just how useful these datasets are for nowcasting the subsurface thermal fields, however, remains to be fully explored. Three types of surface data-sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface height (SSH), and Gulf Stream position (GSP)-are used here in a series of data assimilation experiments to test their usefulness when assimilated into a realistic primitive equation model. The U.S. Navy's analysis fields from the Optimal Thermal Interpolation System are used to simulate the surface data and to evaluate nowcast errors. Correlation …

Device Independent Color Imaging Modules For Iris Explorer, Christopher Hauf Dec 1997

Device Independent Color Imaging Modules For Iris Explorer, Christopher Hauf

Theses

Having a flexible and expandable system of interconnecting modules which create device independent color image processing chains is a powerful tool for color science research and education. The objective of this research was to see if there existed a commercially available application which would provide the framework for such a system, learn that application, build a system of device independent imaging modules, and document the process so future developer's could easily expand the system. The Numerical Algorithms IRIS Explorer software proved to be the best fit for the system since it offered an intuitive user interface, a powerful set of …

The Rediscovery Of Grounded Theory: Strategies For Qualitative Research In Adult Education, Wayne A. Babchuk Dec 1997

The Rediscovery Of Grounded Theory: Strategies For Qualitative Research In Adult Education, Wayne A. Babchuk

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Grounded theory is becoming an increasingly popular research methodology for use in adult education and other forms of educational inquiry, yet there is currently considerable disagreement among its co-founders concerning the implementation of this approach. Reflective of this ambiguity and to further confuse matters for the potential grounded theorist, educators who have used this methodology in the field often operationalize grounded theory’s procedures and practices according to their own interpretations and contextualiy-specific research needs. Moreover, these analysts often do not thoroughly document the specifics of their research, often failing to provide information concerning the methodological decisions they surely must have …
