The Self-Organizing Desk, Daniela Rus, Peter De Santis
Dartmouth Scholarship
The self-organizing desk is a system that enhances a physical desk-top with electronic information. It can remember, organize, update, and manipulate the information contained in the documents on a desk. The system consists of a simple robot eye that can survey the desk, a module for smart extraction of information from the images taken by the robot, a module for representing this information in multiple views, and a module that allows a user to interact with this information.

Fast Discrete Polynomial Transforms With Applications To Data Analysis For Distance Transitive Graphs, J. R. Driscoll, D. M. Healy, D. N. Rockmore
Dartmouth Scholarship
Let $\poly = \{P_0,\dots,P_{n-1}\}$ denote a set of polynomials with complex coefficients. Let $\pts = \{z_0,\dots,z_{n-1}\}\subset \cplx$ denote any set of {\it sample points}. For any $f = (f_0,\dots,f_{n-1}) \in \cplx^n$, the {\it discrete polynomial transform} of f (with respect to $\poly$ and $\pts$) is defined as the collection of sums, $\{\fhat(P_0),\dots,\fhat(P_{n-1})\}$, where $\fhat(P_j) = \langle f,P_j \rangle = \sum_{i=0}^{n-1} f_iP_j(z_i)w(i)$ for some associated weight function w. These sorts of transforms find important applications in areas such as medical imaging and signal processing.
In this paper, we present fast algorithms for computing discrete orthogonal polynomial transforms. For a system …

An Interview Study Of Native American Philosophical Foundations In Education, Vivian Delgado
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to focus on oral Native American world views or philosophies. Native world views and philosophies and epistemology deal with the foundation of knowledge of and about aboriginal peoples. In most cases oral traditions are thousands of years old and have maintained their philosophical value. Prior to the establishment of Western education, narratives among indigenous people were used to teach and educate in the most formal sense. Today it serves as a credible and authentic source in Native American education and is weighted with the same importance that it has always had. The re-discovery of …

The Jewish/Nephite Lunar Calendar, Randall P. Spackman
The Jewish/Nephite Lunar Calendar, Randall P. Spackman
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Nephite record keepers were very meticulous in monitoring the passage of time. Lehi’s departure from Jerusalem in the reign of Zedekiah marks the beginning of one formal reckoning of time. The prophesied 600-year window to the birth of Christ could well have been measured in lunar years. Lehi must have drawn on familiar Israelite calendrical practices to establish his calendar. Lehi’s descendants likely used twelve lunar months for their calendar without adding an occasional thirteenth month to adjust for the length of a solar year, which would solve the chronological problem of dating Lehi’s departure 600 years before the birth …

Staffing Up And Dropping Out: Unintended Consequences Of High Demand For Teachers, Mark Fetler
Staffing Up And Dropping Out: Unintended Consequences Of High Demand For Teachers, Mark Fetler
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Growing public school enrollment and the need to maintain or improve service to students has increased the demand for teachers, perhaps more rapidly than existing sources can accommodate. While some schools recruit well qualified teachers by offering higher salaries or better working conditions, others may satisfy their need for staff by relaxing hiring standards or assigning novice teachers to difficult classrooms. ...

Model Discrimination And Estimation Of The Intraparticle Mass Transfer Parameters For The Adsorption Of Bovine Serum Albumin Onto Porous Adsorbent Particles By The Use Of Experimental Frontal Analysis Data, G. A. Heeter, Athanasios I. Liapis
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Experimental data from a chromatographic system involving the adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) onto porous anion-exchange adsorbent particles packed in a column are presented. The parameters that characterize the mass transfer mechanisms of intraparticle diffusion and convection are estimated by fitting the predictions of dynamic mathematical models describing adsorption in column systems having spherical perfusive and purely diffusive adsorbent Particles to the experimental breakthrough data obtained from the column adsorption system. Both linear and nonlinear expressions for the equilibrium isotherm are considered. The values of the transport parameters are estimated in the time domain for the nonlinear adsorption models …

Toward A Molecular Theory Of Vapor-Phase Nucleation. V. Self-Consistency In The Decoupled Dimer Limit, K.J. Oh, Xiao Cheng Zeng, H. Reiss
Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications
The previous papers of this series introduced a molecular i / υ cluster theory of vapor phase nucleation. This theory differs from most conventional ones in that the cluster (due to fluctuation) is not only characterized by its number of particles i but also by a spherical volume υ. Thus the free energy of formation of the cluster is not merely a one-dimensional function of the number of particles i but a two-dimensional function of both i and v (i.e., it is a free energy surface). In the first stage of this development (Refs. 1–3) the theory is based on …

Mathematics
A magneto-optic trap (MOT) can provide a well-polarized, backing-free, localized source of radioactive atoms for β-decay experiments. We have trapped approximately 6000 atoms of 38Km ( t1/2 = 0.925s) and 2000 atoms of 37K (1.226 s) produced at the TRIUMF on-line separator TISOL in a vapor-cell MOT. We have measured optical isotope shifts and deduced the nuclear charge radii, which show an unusual lack of change at the neutron number N = 20 shell closure. Plans include a search for scalar contributions to the β+- ν correlation in the 0+→0+ decay …

Nested Hadamard Difference Sets, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab
Nested Hadamard Difference Sets, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
A Hadamard difference set (HDS) has the parameters (4N2, 2N2 − N, N2 − N). In the abelian case it is equivalent to a perfect binary array, which is a multidimensional matrix with elements ±1 such that all out-of-phase periodic autocorrelation coefficients are zero. We show that if a group of the form H × Z2pr contains a (hp2r, √hpr(2√hpr − 1), √hpr(√hpr − 1)) HDS (HDS), p a prime not dividing |H| …

Accumulation Of Lead By Anabaena Cylindrica: Mathematical Modeling And An Energy Dispersive X-Ray Study, David T. Swift, Daniel Forciniti
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The ability of microorganisms to selectively adsorb various heavy metal ions has been recognized for over a decade. We have investigated the biosorption of lead by an active culture of the cyanobacterium Anabaena cylindrica. Energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis was used to evaluate the different uptake mechanisms in the various subcellular regions. Three were identified; a very fast adsorption mechanism in the cell envelope; a time- dependent deposition reaction on the cell surface; and an adsorption mechanism, also time dependent, on the polyphosphate body inside the cell. Atomic absorption spectrometry was then used to quantify the changes with time of bulk …

Effect Of Peer Group Discussion On Self-Concept In The Gifted Adolescent Population, Helena Ann Rizer
MSN Research Projects
The purpose of this research study was to determine whether peer group discussions improve self-concept in the gifted adolescent population. The researcher also sought to ascertain what reflective themes emerged from journals written following the peer group discussions. The Theory of Modeling and Role-Modeling served as the theoretical framework for this quasi-experimental study. The sample consisted of 21 students enrolled in the 11th grade of a residential high school for mathematics and sciences. The school was located on a university campus in the southern region of the United States. The 21 students were randomly assigned to either the experimental (n …

Impedance Spectroscopy Of Bilayer Lipid Membranes And Tio₂ Based Solar Cells, Uwe Hermes
Impedance Spectroscopy Of Bilayer Lipid Membranes And Tio₂ Based Solar Cells, Uwe Hermes
Dissertations and Theses
It has been proposed in the literature that a novel class of biosensors can be based on a bimolecular layer of lipids supported on one side by a metallic surface. In order to estimate the potential of this system for the design of membrane sensors, we have studied properties of a two-electrode system consisting of a teflon insulated metallic wire and a Ag/AgCl electrode, both immersed in KCl solution. The lipid bimolecular layer was formed on the metal surface of the cut teflon insulated wire. The electrical conductivity properties of such a device were studied in the frequency range 20 …
