The Iron And The Steel Industry In Nigeria: An Assessment Of Performance, Sunday N. Essien
The Iron And The Steel Industry In Nigeria: An Assessment Of Performance, Sunday N. Essien
CBN Occasional Papers
The iron and steel industry is considered to play an important role in the process of rapid development and attainment self-sufficiency in the industrial sector. This paper assesses the performance of the Steel industry in Nigeria against the effective utilization of available manpower, raw material and energy resources in the country as well as the domestic technological capabilities. unfortunately, these endowments have not been optimally utilized in the planning and implementation of the steel project with result that the import components of production remain very high. Based on the declining trend in operations of the existing plants, the paper concludes …

Aerial Photography Techniques To Estimate Populations Of Laughing Gull Nests In Jamaica Bay, New York, 1992-1995, Richard A. Dolbeer, Jerrold L. Belant, Glen E. Bernhardt
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
We evaluated aerial photography (full coverage, using fixed-wing aircraft) and aerial video (transects, using helicopter) surveys to estimate the population of Laughing Gull (Larus ahicilla) nests in Jamaica Bay, New York, during June 1992-1995. We counted 4,920 nests in the colony using aerial photography and estimated 5,367 nests using aerial video in 1992. In 1993-1995, we respectively counted 5,691,5,095, and 6,126 nests in the colony using aerial photography, and estimated from ground plots that our counts differed from the actual number of nests by means of -9% to 1%. Overall (1993-1995) correction factors (by which to multiply the aerial photography …
Numerical Observation Of A Tubular Phase In Anisotropic Membranes, Mark Bowick, Marco Falcioni, Gudmar Thorleifsson
Numerical Observation Of A Tubular Phase In Anisotropic Membranes, Mark Bowick, Marco Falcioni, Gudmar Thorleifsson
Physics - All Scholarship
We provide the first numerical evidence for the existence of a tubular phase, predicted by Radzihovsky and Toner (RT), for anisotropic tethered membranes without self-avoidance. Incorporating anisotropy into the bending rigidity of a simple model of a tethered membrane with free boundary conditions, we show that the model indeed has two phase transitions corresponding to the flat-to-tubular and tubular-to-crumpled transitions. For the tubular phase we measure the Flory exponent \nu_F and the roughness exponent \zet. We find \nu_F=0.305(14) and \zeta=0.895(60), which are in reasonable agreement with the theoretical predictions of RT --- \nu_F=1/4 and \zeta=1.

Spectroscopically Distinct Cobalt(Ii) Sites In Heterodimetallic Forms Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica: Characterization Of Substrate Binding, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz
Physics Faculty Research and Publications
The Co(II)Zn(II)- and Zn(II)Co(II)-substituted derivatives of the aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP) were probed by EPR spectroscopy. EPR spectra of the high-spin S = 3/2 Co(II) ions in [CoZn(AAP)] and [ZnCo(AAP)] indicated that each metal binding site provides a spectroscopically distinct signature. For [CoZn(AAP)], subtraction of EPR spectra recorded at pH 7.5 and 10 revealed that two species were present and that the relative contributions to each of the experimental spectra were pH-dependent. The first EPR species, predominant at lower pH values, was simulated as a relatively featureless axial signal with geff values of 2.20, 3.92, and …

Museum. Edu : A Guide For Developers Of Museum Web Sites That Strive To Educate, Michael J. Mathews
Graduate Student Independent Studies
Often, as a museum's web site is developed, designers strive to create experiences that educate the web site visitor who may or may not ever visit the actual physical collection. This paper is intended to be a guide for museum educators who are seeking to design or assist in the design of museum web sites that connect with users.
The World Wide Web is expanding at a breathtaking rate. It is quickly becoming simply expected that established companies and institutions will have an address on the web. Museums and other educational institutions have helped to pioneer much of what the …

On The Green Vol. 27 No. 15 August 4, 1997, Gallaudet University
1991-2000
On the Green is an internal publication of Gallaudet College, which later became Gallaudet University. It notified employees of updates around the campus and in the broader community, including new construction and the establishment of new academic programs. Running until 2010, it was supplanted by various forms of online mass communications across multiple audiences.

Using the CLEO-II data set we have searched for the decays B0 → D(*)+D(*)-. We observe one candidate signal event for the decay B0 → D*+D*- with an expected background of 0.022 ± 0.011 events. This yield corresponds to a branching fraction of B(B0 → D*+D*-) = [5.317-3.7+7.1(stat) ± 1.0(syst)] x 10-4 and an upper limit of B(B0 → D*+D*-) < 2.2 X 10-3 at the 90% C.L. We see no significant excess of signal above …
Scanning Motions Of An Atomic Force Microscope Tip In Water, Kenichiro Koga, Xiao Cheng Zeng
Scanning Motions Of An Atomic Force Microscope Tip In Water, Kenichiro Koga, Xiao Cheng Zeng
Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications
Integral equation techniques are used to study scanning motions of a single-atom tip of the atomic force microscope (AFM) over a rigid, hydrophobic monolayer substrate in water. The calculated force curve is found to be oscillatory, in agreement with recent AFM experiments, which can lead to multiple scanning trajectories for the tip under a constant load. The unique trajectory along which the system is thermodynamically stable is revealed. This study shows that the tip may take a hopping motion over a defect-free substrate due to layering of water molecules between the tip and substrate.
Modeling Improvements For Water Supply Forecasting In The Columbia River Basin, Daniel Albert Buller
Modeling Improvements For Water Supply Forecasting In The Columbia River Basin, Daniel Albert Buller
Dissertations and Theses
The purposes of this study were twofold. The first was to explore possible improvements that could be made over existing methods by applying alternative modeling approaches, including the one developed by Garen to forecast runoff volumes in the Columbia River at The Dalles, Oregon. The second was to use the Southern Oscillation as one of the variables to forecast spring and summer runoff and to evaluate whether this variable adds significant information early in the season before any snow has accumulated. The Columbia River basin's mountainous topography and northern latitude are ideally suited for water supply forecasting because much of …

Overview Of The Longitudinal Surveys Of Australian Youth Program 1996, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
LSAY Technical Reports
The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) program brings together two existing, long-established projects, ACER’s Youth in Transition and DEETYA’s Australian Youth Survey. The origins and extent of these two projects are described in the following pages. While contact with the AYS cohort is due to finish in 1997, it is hoped to continue to survey members of the Youth in Transtion 1975 birth cohort up to at least age 25. In addition, a new program of surveys of students progressing through school and into postschool education and the labour force was established in 1995. New cohorts of Year 9 …
