Effect Of Noise In Optically-Fed Phased Array Antennas For Cdma Wireless Networks, Taha Landolsi, Lakshman S. Tamil, William P. Osborne Dec 1997

Effect Of Noise In Optically-Fed Phased Array Antennas For Cdma Wireless Networks, Taha Landolsi, Lakshman S. Tamil, William P. Osborne

Conference Proceedings

The characteristics of an optically fed phased array antenna are affected by the amplitude and phase noise introduced by optical amplifiers (EDFA) used in the system. A theoretical derivation and a numerical computation of the effect of phase noise on antenna performance are given in this paper. The phase fluctuations make the main beam to jitter around a mean value directly related to the mean and the variance of the amplified spontaneous emission induced random phase change.

The Determination Of The Crystal Structure Of 2-Methyl-2methylacrylyl-Cyclohexanone- (1,5)-Diaxaspiro Mononeopentyl By X-Ray Christallography, Joann Stevenson Dec 1997

The Determination Of The Crystal Structure Of 2-Methyl-2methylacrylyl-Cyclohexanone- (1,5)-Diaxaspiro Mononeopentyl By X-Ray Christallography, Joann Stevenson

McCabe Thesis Collection

Cyclohexanone, the central component of the compound 2-methyl-2-methylacrylylcyclohexanone-( l,5)-diaxaspiro mononeopentyl (see figure on page 2), serves as a solvent for oil in piston type aircraft and in natural and vinyl resins. It is used in the production of crude rubber, waxes, fats, shellac and DDT and other pesticides. Cyclohexanone also is a part of the production of adipic acid, which is used to prepare nylon and is used to prepare cyclohexanone resins via condensation to enhance the adhesive properties of products like floor paints.

Cyclohexanones are among the most accessible hydroaromatic derivatives and serve as the initial materials for the …

Electron-Impact Total Ionization Cross Sections Of Ch And C2H2, Yong-Ki Kim, M. Asgar Ali, M. Eugene Rudd Dec 1997

Electron-Impact Total Ionization Cross Sections Of Ch And C2H2, Yong-Ki Kim, M. Asgar Ali, M. Eugene Rudd

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

Electron-impact total ionization cross sections for the CH radical and C2H2 (acetylene) have been calculated using the Binary-Encounter-Bethe (BEB) model. The BEB model combines the Mott cross section and the asymptotic form of the Bethe theory, and has been shown to generate reliable ionization cross sections for a large variety of molecules. The BEB cross sections for CH and C2H2 are in good agreement with the available experimental data from ionization thresholds to hundreds of eV in incident energies.

Shielding Strategies For Human Space Exploration Chapter 9: Hze Interactions In Biological Materials, M. Eugene Rudd Dec 1997

Shielding Strategies For Human Space Exploration Chapter 9: Hze Interactions In Biological Materials, M. Eugene Rudd

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

It is shown that most of the energy deposited by fast charged particles traversing matter occurs through ionization, i.e., the ejection of electrons during the atomic collision. The important mechanisms of ionization are identified and several methods of calculating the relevant differential and total cross sections are described. These include both classical and quantum theoretical methods and two semi-empirical models. The calculational methods were intended only for light, bare-ion projectiles, and care must be exercised in extending them to heavy, dressed projectiles.

Identifying Permanent And Temporary Components In Daily And Monthly Japanese Stock Prices, Ray Bonnie, Shaw Chen, Jeffrey E. Jarrett Dec 1997

Identifying Permanent And Temporary Components In Daily And Monthly Japanese Stock Prices, Ray Bonnie, Shaw Chen, Jeffrey E. Jarrett

College of Business Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study is to analyze time series of daily and monthly values for the Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) and stock price values for 15 companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Section 1 (TSE-I), to determine the contribution of permanent and temporary components to Japanese stock prices. The existence of temporary components in the price series would imply that Japanese stock returns arc partially predictable. The method of canonical correlation is used to determine components common to each series and the persistence of each component series is evaluated by estimating the amount of dependence in the …

Chromospherically Active Stars. Xvi. The Double-Lined Binary 42 Capricorni, Francis C. Fekel

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

New spectroscopic observations of the chromospherically active binary, 42 Capricorni, have resulted in the detection of lines of the secondary, improved orbital elements, and the determination of fundamental properties of the components. 42 Cap has an orbital period of 13.174004 d, an eccentricity of 0.176, and a mass ratio A/B of 1.375. No evidence for a variation of the center-of-mass velocity, suggested by earlier investigators, has been found. Spectral types of the primary and secondary are G1 IV and G2 V, respectively. The V mag difference of 1.94 and HIPPARCOS parallax result in MV = 2.79 mag for A and …

The Stable Manifold Theorem For Sde's (Stochastic Analysis Seminar, Msri), Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed

Miscellaneous (presentations, translations, interviews, etc)

I gave the following two talks at the Stochastic Analysis Seminar at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Berkeley, California. The two talks describe recent joint work with Michael Scheutzow.

FIRST TALK:

THE STABLE MANIFOLD THEOREM FOR SDE'S , Part I

Wednesday, December 3, 1997, 11:00-12:00 am, MSRI Lecture Hall.

In this talk, we formulate a local stable manifold theorem for stochastic differential equations in Euclidean space, driven by multi-dimensional Brownian motion. We introduce the concept of hyperbolicity for stationary trajectories of a SDE. This is done using the Oseledec muliplicative ergodic theorem on the linearized SDE around the stationary …

Continuation Of Illinois River Water Quality Monitoring Of Moores Creek, Paul F. Vendrell Dec 1997

Continuation Of Illinois River Water Quality Monitoring Of Moores Creek, Paul F. Vendrell

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

In Northwest Arkansas, nutrients transported by surface water are a major concern. These nutrients are implicated in causing water quality impairment of lakes in Northwest Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. The nutrients of concern are nitrogen and phosphorus. Nitrogen and phosphorus stimulate algae production in water bodies and can cause objectionable water quality. Problems associated with algae growth are aesthetic impairment, objectionable taste and odor of potable water, interference with recreation activities, and fish kills in some hyper-eutrophic cases. The sources of these nutrients are primarily from land application of confined animal wastes as soil amendments to pastures. In 1990, the …

Socratic Autonomy And Responsibility In The Apology , Raymond M. Herbenick Dec 1997

Socratic Autonomy And Responsibility In The Apology , Raymond M. Herbenick

University of Dayton Review

In short, the theme of "Autonomy and Responsibility" becomes more intelligible once two shortfalls are remedied: first, failure to recognize a good reasons model of ethical reasoning in the elenchial activities of Plato's historical Socrates; and second, failure to adequately correct Plato's historical Socrates with guises of Socrates offered by contemporaries such as Xenophon and Aristophanes and by next-generation historians of philosophy such as Aristotle. However, only the first shortfall will be remedied in what follows.

Forensic Soil Analysis: Characterization Of The Sand Fraction, John Baize

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this project was to develop a comprehensive analytical method for the characterization of soil by examining particle size, elemental composition, and percent organic matter in soil, and to determine its forensic applicability. In this study, five soils of varying geological locations were examined including two samples from Kentucky; two samples from Pennsylvania; and one from Washington D C A Gilson sonic sieve shaker was used to separate fractions of soil to determine particle size, and a JEOL scanning electron microscope with a Kevex EDS detector was used to determine elemental composition. These techniques coupled with percent total …

An Examination Of The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Newton's Method For Nonlinear Optimization, Renita Demalade Dec 1997

An Examination Of The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Newton's Method For Nonlinear Optimization, Renita Demalade

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis begins with the history of operations research and introduces two of its major branches, linear and nonlinear optimization. While other methods are mentioned, the focus is on analytical methods used to solve nonlinear optimization problems. We briefly look at some of the most effective constrained methods for nonlinear optimization and then show how unconstrained methods often play a role in developing effective constrained optimization algorithms. In particular we examine Newton and steepest descent methods, focusing primarily on Newton/quasi-Newton methods. Because Newton's method is primarily viewed as a root-finding method, we start with the basic root-finding algorithm for single …

Mathematical Modeling Of Convective Heat Transfer In Mammoth Cave, Jonathan Jernigan Dec 1997

Mathematical Modeling Of Convective Heat Transfer In Mammoth Cave, Jonathan Jernigan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Around two centuries ago, changes were made to the entrances of Mammoth Cave and its passages. Today the Historic Entrance to Mammoth Cave is enlarged and the passage just beyond the entrance known as Houchins' Narrows has been cleared of rubble and filled with sediments. These enlargements have resulted in an increase in airflow throughout the Historic Section of the cave causing environmental conditions such as air temperature and airflow to fluctuate. These fluctuations have negatively impacted inhabitants and contents of the cave system. To restore natural conditions within the cave, Science and Resource Management personnel at Mammoth Cave National …

Development Of An Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Combustor (Afbc), William Orndorff Dec 1997

Development Of An Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Combustor (Afbc), William Orndorff

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The relatively recent interest in the U.S. in the development of atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) has been preceded by two main factors. First of these is the ever present problem of acid rain and growing public support for cleaner burning fossil fuels. Second is the increasing demand on public landfills and subsequent need for burning of municipal solid waste. From these factors and their corresponding influences, Western Kentucky University has the impetus and has received the financial assistance necessary to build and develop a laboratory scale AFBC system. A brief history of the events leading to this development, as …

Coincidences Are Not Accidental: A Theorem, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 1997

Coincidences Are Not Accidental: A Theorem, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In this paper, we formalize and prove the statement that coincidences cannot be accidental, a statement that underlies many useful heuristics in mathematics and physics.

Our proof uses a version of Kolmogorov complexity, a technique originally developed to describe randomness and "accidentalness".
