Absolute Triply Differential (E,2E) Cross Section Measurements For H With Comparison To Theory, J. Roder, H. Erhardt, Cheng Pan, Anthony F. Starace, Igor Bray, Dmitry V. Fursa Sep 1997

Absolute Triply Differential (E,2E) Cross Section Measurements For H With Comparison To Theory, J. Roder, H. Erhardt, Cheng Pan, Anthony F. Starace, Igor Bray, Dmitry V. Fursa

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Absolute triply differential (e,2e) cross section measurements are presented for H (for incident energies, E0, of 15.6 and 17.6 eV) for equal energy sharing and the θ12 = π configuration. Results of distorted partial wave calculations agree with the measurements; those of convergent close coupling calculations agree with the relative angular distributions, but are lower than experiment by factors of from 2 to 7. Relative experimental results for H for E0 = 14.6 eV show a qualitative change in shape, which agrees with theory. Implications of the absolute experimental results for the …

Study Of The Effects Of Initial-Bred Nuclei On Zeolite Naa Crystallization By Quasi-Elastic Light Scattering Spectroscopy And Electron Microscopy, Leszek Gora, Kiril A. Streletzky, Robert W. Thompson, George D.J. Phillies Sep 1997

Study Of The Effects Of Initial-Bred Nuclei On Zeolite Naa Crystallization By Quasi-Elastic Light Scattering Spectroscopy And Electron Microscopy, Leszek Gora, Kiril A. Streletzky, Robert W. Thompson, George D.J. Phillies

Physics Faculty Publications

Synthesis studies have been conducted at 25, 60, and 80 °C with a clear solution batch composition that produces zeolite NaA. Aluminosilicate precursor material was added to promote the synthesis and to evaluate the effects of adding initial-bred nuclei that were created by a precursor “seed” reaction. It is shown that the initial-bred nuclei promoted the crystallization rate, that the crystalline mass produced was increased when using the initial-bred nuclei, and that the nucleation of a second population was not inhibited by the addition of initial-bred nuclei as seeds.

Asymptotics Of Zeros Of Relativistic Hermite Polynomials, Matthew He, K. Pan, Paolo E. Ricci

Mathematics Faculty Articles

The relativistic Hermite polynomial (RHP) is a class of orthogonal polynomials associated with varying weights. We study the asymptotics of the zeros of the RHP when both degree $n$ of polynomials and relativistic parameter $N$ approach infinity.

Nonlinear Front Evolution Of Hydrodynamic Chemical Waves In Vertical Cylinders, J. W. Wilder, D. A. Vasquez, Boyd F. Edwards Sep 1997

Nonlinear Front Evolution Of Hydrodynamic Chemical Waves In Vertical Cylinders, J. W. Wilder, D. A. Vasquez, Boyd F. Edwards

All Physics Faculty Publications

The nonlinear stability of three-dimensional reaction-diffusion fronts in vertical cylinders is considered using the viscous hydrodynamic fluid equations in the limit of infinite thermal diffusivity. A nonlinear front evolution equation is presented and used to examine the transition from nonaxisymmetric to axisymmetric convection observed in experiments performed in cylinders. Comparisons with experiments show excellent agreement in both the shape and speed of the front.

Optimization Of Microstructure Development During Hot Working Using Control Theory, James C. Malas Iii, W. Garth Frazier, S. Venugopal, Enrique A. Medina, Steven Madeiros, Raghavan Srinivasan, R. Dennis Irwin, W. M. Mullins, Anil Chaudhary Sep 1997

Optimization Of Microstructure Development During Hot Working Using Control Theory, James C. Malas Iii, W. Garth Frazier, S. Venugopal, Enrique A. Medina, Steven Madeiros, Raghavan Srinivasan, R. Dennis Irwin, W. M. Mullins, Anil Chaudhary

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

A new approach for controlling microstructure development during hot working processes is proposed. This approach is based on optimal control theory and involves state-space type models for describing the material behavior and the mechanics of the process. The effect of process control parameters such as strain, strain rate, and temperature on important microstructural features can be systematically formulated and then solved as an optimal control problem. This method has been applied to the optimization of grain size and process parameters such as die geometry and ram velocity during the extrusion of plain carbon steel. Experimental results of this investigation show …

Maximum Entropy Approach To Optimal Sensor Placement For Aerospace Non-Destructive Testing, Roberto A. Osegueda, Carlos M. Ferregut, Mary J. George, Jose M. Gutierrez, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The ideal design of an airplane should include built-in sensors that are pre-blended in the perfect aerodynamic shape. Each built-in sensor is expensive to blend in and requires continuous maintenance and data processing, so we would like to use as few sensors as possible. The ideal formulation of the corresponding optimization problem is, e.g., to minimize the average detection error for fault locations. However, there are two obstacles to this ideal formulation:

--First, this ideal formulation requires that we know the probabilities of different fault locations and the probabilities of different aircraft exploitation regimes. In reality, especially for a …

Electron Transfer Across A Peptide−Peptide Interface Within A Designed Metalloprotein, Gennady V. Kozlov, Michael Y. Ogawa Sep 1997

Electron Transfer Across A Peptide−Peptide Interface Within A Designed Metalloprotein, Gennady V. Kozlov, Michael Y. Ogawa

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Mechanistic studies of biological electron-transfer (ET) reactions have involved the use of surface-derivatized proteins, protein−protein complexes, and polypeptide-bridged donor−acceptor compounds. These latter studies seek to use well-defined model systems to better define the role of the intervening protein matrix in mediating biological electron transfers. However, whereas many in vivo ET reactions occur across a noncovalent protein−protein interface, the primary role of the peptide spacers found in current model systems is to provide a covalent link between the donor and acceptor sites. As such, these systems are poorly suited to probe the mechanisms of ET reactions occurring across a peptide−peptide interface.

The Culture Of Catholic Schools, James L. Heft Sep 1997

The Culture Of Catholic Schools, James L. Heft

Journal of Catholic Education

This article explores the elusive but important role culture plays in making Catholic schools distinctive. It examines the connection between ritual, especially the Eucharist, and the everyday practices and habits of those who constitute the school community. It further examines the relationship between dogma and dialogues, affirming that both are necessary for Christian life and community.

Lamb Shift Of 3p And 4p States And The Determination Of Α, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Gerhard Soff, Peter J. Mohr

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The fine-structure interval of P states in hydrogenlike systems can be determined theoretically with high precision, because the energy levels of P states are only slightly influenced by the structure of the nucleus. Therefore a measurement of the fine structure may serve as an excellent test of QED in bound systems, or alternatively as a means of determining the fine-structure constant a with very high precision. In this paper an improved analytic calculation of higher-order binding corrections to the one-loop self-energy of 3P and 4P states in hydrogenlike systems with a low nuclear charge number Z is presented. The method …
