Sprachwiderstand': Critical Language Analysis In Böll's Writings Of The 1980s, Frank Finlay
Sprachwiderstand': Critical Language Analysis In Böll's Writings Of The 1980s, Frank Finlay
University of Dayton Review
Like so many of his contemporaries who experienced the historical calamity of the Third Reich, Heinrich Böll had ample opportunity to witness the physical and psychological coercion deployed by the National Socialists in establishing and maintaining their criminal regime. Moreover, as a writer, he possessed an acute understanding of the key ideological role which language played in manufacturing consent for Hitler's racist tyranny, not least via the insidious and all-embracing propaganda of the state-controlled media. It was the historical example of German fascism, therefore, which convinced Böll that ideology was pervasively present in language and that the written and spoken …
Experiment Und Entdeckung': The Relevance Of Drama To Böll's Literary Development, John Walker
Experiment Und Entdeckung': The Relevance Of Drama To Böll's Literary Development, John Walker
University of Dayton Review
Böll describes the artist's act of creation in terms of a tension between embodiment (Verkorperung) and unpredictability (Unberechenbarkeit). For Böll, literature never directly reflects a reality external to itself, but creates an autonomous linguistic reality of its own. Yet he insists that the writer is responsible, both aesthetically and ethically, for the embodiment of that reality in the socially objective medium of human speech and writing. He goes on to speak of a space which is left over or left in between — ein Rest or ein Zwischenraum — between the potential and the actual presence of meaning in language. …
A Cross-Cultural Study Of Irish And Egyptian Expressions Of Sympathy With Reference To Gender, Anne Abdel Moneim Hassan
A Cross-Cultural Study Of Irish And Egyptian Expressions Of Sympathy With Reference To Gender, Anne Abdel Moneim Hassan
Archived Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the cross-cultural pragmatic differences in realizing the speech act of sympathy. Specifically it examines: (1) the similarities and differences in strategies used for expressing sympathy by both males and females in the Egyptians and Irish groups and (2) the kinds of pragmatic failure expected to occur among the Egyptian male and female EFL learners when expressing sympathy in the target language.
Two types of data were collected: spontaneous and elicited. Spontaneous data were collected by audiotape recording and note taking. Elicited data were collected by a ten-item discourse completion task (DCT). Subjects of the elicited data were …
Misappropriation Theory As A Permissible Basis Of Section 10(B) Liability, The, Heather L. Reinsch
Misappropriation Theory As A Permissible Basis Of Section 10(B) Liability, The, Heather L. Reinsch
Missouri Law Review
Whether the misappropriation theory is a permissible basis for liability under section 10(b) of the Securities Exchange Act is an issue that has split the U.S. Courts of Appeals. The issue turns on the statutory interpretation of section 10(b) and Rule 10b-5, as well as policy considerations. The Supreme Court finally settled the issue in United States v. O'Hagan, when it reversed the Eighth Circuit and permitted the United States government to base section 10(b) liability on the misappropriation theory. The effect of the Court's decision is to make a person liable under section 10(b) if he received material and …

Netbags Revisited: Cultural Narratives From Papua New Guinea, Pamela J. Stewart, Andrew J. Strathern
Netbags Revisited: Cultural Narratives From Papua New Guinea, Pamela J. Stewart, Andrew J. Strathern
Pacific Studies
In this article we reconsider materials on netbags from the Highlands of Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya, as well as other parts of Melanesia, arguing that understanding of them is best set into a framework of ideas regarding embodiment and processes of trope expansion. Starting from the equation of netbag and womb, we trace the ramifications of this object of material culture and its contemporary significance in a commodifying context. Main emphasis is placed on materials from the Melpa or Mount Hagen area of the Western Highlands Province in Papua New Guinea, with comparisons to the cultures of the …

Fuzzy Based Forebody Vortex Flow Controller For The X-29a Aircraft, Jin Suzuki
Fuzzy Based Forebody Vortex Flow Controller For The X-29a Aircraft, Jin Suzuki
Masters Theses
This paper demonstrates the development and performance of A Fuzzy Logic based regulator for an aircraft which is equipped with pneumatic forebody Vortex Flow Controller at high angle-of-attack flight condition. The VFC provides the pilot additional control power at flight conditions where conventional effectors such as rudder and differential flaps lose effectiveness.
Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) is applied to a mixed bang-bang and conventional type control system. This unique configuration ensures robustness of the system and simplifies the controller design. Performance of the FLC based regulator shows a 10.3% reduction in cost function compared to the system controlled by a …
