Palimericks, James Puder
Palimericks, James Puder
Word Ways
Limericks and palindromes both being popular forms of linguistic recreation, it occurred to me to wonder whether the two could be salutarily combined. Is it possible to compose a decent limerick which is also an end-to-end palindrome? And if so, is it worth the trouble?

Spinal Cord Stimulation For Chronic Pain Management: Towards An Expert System, Kenneth M. Alo, Richard Alo, Andre De Korvin, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Chronic pain is a serious health problem affecting millions of people worldwide. Currently, spinal cord simulation is one of the most effective methods of easing the chronic pain. For most patients, a careful selection of weak electric currents enables to drastically decrease the pain level. The first devices offered only a few possible regimes, and it was possible to choose an appropriate regime simply by exhaustive search. Continuous engineering progress leads to more and more flexible devices that offer a wide variety of millions of possible simulation regimes. With this variety, it is no longer possible to test all of …

From Expert Words Directly To Numerical Simulations: Group-Theoretic Approach To Computing With Words In Information/Intelligent Systems, Vladik Kreinovich, Brian Penn, Scott A. Starks
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many real-life situations, e.g., when making an environmental decision, it is important to be able to predict long-term consequences of different decisions. Very often, these predictions must be done in the situation where the only available information consists of expert rules, which are formulated by words from natural language. One possible way to transform these expert words into numerical simulation (leading to prediction) is to use the fuzzy control methodology. However, there is a problem with using this methodology: it invokes replacing each word by a membership function, and this replacement drastically increases the required computer space (and thus, …

Socio-Economic Rights And The South African Transition: The Role Of The Truth And Reconciliation Commission, Ronald Slye
Faculty Articles
This article examines a part of a foundational principle of the South African Bill of Rights that individuals are entitled to a range of rights that ensure individual security, freedom, and well-being, and that these rights are interdependent and the crucial role of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (the "TRC") in laying the groundwork for the fulfillment of those rights.
A 'New' Cultural Geography? Debates About Invention And Reinvention, Lily Kong
A 'New' Cultural Geography? Debates About Invention And Reinvention, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The Remaking Human Geography series critically reviews key journal articles, published in the last ten years, which have become 'citation classics'. Contributors to the series report on the academic debate which followed publication of the original article and assess why the article proved so influential. In this case Kong reviews an article on cultural geography by Cosgrove and Jackson (first published in Area in 1987). Peter Jackson also offers his thoughts on the 'cultural turn' and on future directions in this research field.

The Role Of The "Harm/Benefit" And "Average Reciprocity Of Advantage" Rules In A Comprehensive Takings Analysis, Lynda J. Oswald
Vanderbilt Law Review
A "regulatory taking" occurs when the government does not formally exercise its power of eminent domain, but enacts a law or undertakes an action that results in a de facto "taking" of property for which compensation is constitutionally mandated., The United States Supreme Court has struggled for decades to determine when a land use regulation is a valid exercise of the police power (and thus not subject to the compensation requirement of the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution) and when such a regulation goes "too far" and becomes a regulatory taking.
The Supreme Court has developed a number …

The Socio-Economic Role Of Crude Oil In The United States And Finland, Judith Deak Kallo
The Socio-Economic Role Of Crude Oil In The United States And Finland, Judith Deak Kallo
Theses
Running a company requires daily assessment of opportunities, risks and trends which involve socio-economic changes and scientific uncertainties. Technical-material resources play a major role in the uncertainty of corporate economics. Overproduction combined with increasing efficiencies have resulted in accelerated use and misuse of resources, accompanied by socio-ecological abuses related to wars and pollution. A significant current threat is global warming. As a result of this global challenge several companies have moved towards a more comprehensive environmental business management model. This is seen in corporate management initiating life cycle assessment and risk analysis of their products.
The socio-economic role of crude …
