Evaluation Of Shore Protection Measures Applied To Eroding Beaches In Florida, Luciana Slomp Esteves Jan 1997

Evaluation Of Shore Protection Measures Applied To Eroding Beaches In Florida, Luciana Slomp Esteves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Evaluations of shore erosion and protection in Florida are constrained by time and space. This study characterizes about 95% of Florida's beaches based on the degree of urban development, direction and rates of shoreline change, presence of sensitive ecological communities, and distribution of sea defense works. The 22 coastal-county maps prepared for this study show that approximately 195 km (16%) of Florida's beaches are eroding and 283 km (23%) are protected by engineering works. About 72% of eroded beaches are geographically associated with inlets. Sand management at inlets is crucial to improve erosion mitigation in Florida. Suggestions designed to enhance …

From Koje-Do To Panmunjom: The Problem Of Repatriation Of Prisoners Of War During The Korean Armistice Negotiations, Joseph H. Poles Jan 1997

From Koje-Do To Panmunjom: The Problem Of Repatriation Of Prisoners Of War During The Korean Armistice Negotiations, Joseph H. Poles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The repatriation of prisoners of war during the Korean Conflict presented the greatest problem to the armistice negotiators trying to end the fighting. Problems arose in the interpretation of various articles of the Geneva Convention of 1949 as it related to prisoners of war. The Communist interpreted these articles to mean that prisoners of war had to be repatriated back to their country of origin. The United Nations position was that the intent of the Geneva Convention meant that prisoners of war had a choice. This war within a war prolonged the Korean Conflict for more than one year. As …

For God And Country: W. T. Stead And The Beginnings Of The New Journalism In Victorian Britain, 1883-1885, Phillip Michael Guerty Jan 1997

For God And Country: W. T. Stead And The Beginnings Of The New Journalism In Victorian Britain, 1883-1885, Phillip Michael Guerty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Since the late nineteenth century, scholars and historians have attributed the growth of a sensational press in Britain to long-term societal changes such as the rise of capitalism. What has been ignored, however, is the importance of individual initiative, mainly that of W. T. Stead of the Pall Mall Gazette. During the Sudan Crisis of 1883-1885, Stead introduced a new type of journalism to England that combined typographical innovations, such as maps and striking headlines, with a lively literary style. At the root of this new type of reporting were Stead's deep-felt convictions about spreading Christianity, extending the empire, and …

Florida Local Government Compliance With Transportation Concurrency, Raymond A. Liberti Jan 1997

Florida Local Government Compliance With Transportation Concurrency, Raymond A. Liberti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Growth management grew as a concept and policy objective in the 1970s and 1980s. The interrelationships of the state and local governments changed when Florida developed growth policy and local government implemented the policy. Nine mandatory elements to be included in a local comprehensive plan and seven mandatory concurrency elements of the 1985 Florida Growth Management Act were expensive elements for local government to implement. As a result, the issue of funding the impacts of growth drove the growth management agenda, leaving the question of compliance. The question is: Did Florida local government comply with the transportation concurrency element of …

Software Reliability Engineering: An Evolutionary Neural Network Approach, Robert. Hochman Jan 1997

Software Reliability Engineering: An Evolutionary Neural Network Approach, Robert. Hochman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis presents the results of an empirical investigation of the applicability of genetic algorithms to a real-world problem in software reliability--the fault-prone module identification problem. The solution developed is an effective hybrid of genetic algorithms and neural networks. This approach (ENNs) was found to be superior, in terms of time, effort, and confidence in the optimality of results, to the common practice of searching manually for the best-performing net. Comparisons were made to discriminant analysis. On fault-prone, not-fault-prone, and overall classification, the lower error proportions for ENNs were found to be statistically significant. The robustness of ENNs follows from …

Stock Market Efficiency An International Comparison, Michael C. Kirk Jan 1997

Stock Market Efficiency An International Comparison, Michael C. Kirk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Major financial newspapers and financial news programs in the United States, such as the Wall Street Journal and the Financial News Network, often mention macroeconomic data in attempting to predict a potential adjustment in the level of stock market prices. The presentation ofthis data is particularly prevalent when the level of stock market prices is in record territory. However, many believe that there exists no relationship, correlation or causal relationship between the level of stock market prices and macroeconomic indicators, especially in technologically advanced nations. The purpose ofthis paper is to test the efficiency of three international stock markets. If …

Chemical Stability Study Of Bace0.9Nd0.1O3−Α High Temperature Proton-Conducting Ceramic, Fanglin Chen, O. Toft Sorensen, Guangyao Meng, Dingkum Peng

Faculty Publications

BaCe0.9Nd0.1O3−a (BCN) ceramic is known to be an excellent high-temperature proton conductor and is a candidate electrolyte for use in solid oxide fuel cells, hydrogen or steam sensors and steam electrolysers. In this work, the chemical stability of BCN was investigated systematically by combining XRD and DTA–TG techniques to study its processing compatibility and its feasibility in potential applications. It was found that above 1200 °C, BCN reacted with alumina or zirconia, leading to the loss of barium and an excess of cerium. In cold water, both sintered BCN disks and powder samples had very …

Anne Hutchinson And The Economics Of Antinomian Selfhood In Colonial New England, Michelle Burnham Jan 1997

Anne Hutchinson And The Economics Of Antinomian Selfhood In Colonial New England, Michelle Burnham

English

If American literary histories so often begin with the New England Puritans, it is because histories with such a starting point are able to tell an appealing national story of coherent community and religious freedom. So, at any rate, suggests T. H. Breen when he notes that beginning the national narrative instead with John Smith and the Virginia colony would require telling a far less pleasing tale of American greed, domination, and exploitation. Philip Gura has likewise wondered how Sacvan Bercovitch's model of an "American self," formulated from exclusively Puritan New England materials, might be complicated by John Smith's mercantilism. …

Prediction Of Yarn Strength From Fiber Properties Using Fuzzy Artmap, Raonak Zaman, Donald C. Wunsch Jan 1997

Prediction Of Yarn Strength From Fiber Properties Using Fuzzy Artmap, Raonak Zaman, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The count-strength-product (CSP) of cotton yarn is a complex function of fiber properties and spinning performance. The traditional way of predicting yarn CSP is using linear multiple regression. The correlation coefficient between actual CSP and predicted CSP obtained from linear regression is almost always less than 0.9. In this paper, we used a Fuzzy ARTMAP network to predict yarn CSP from fiber properties and spinning performance. Fiber properties and spinning data were used as inputs to ARTa, and yarn CSP was used as ARTb input. Our objectives are: better prediction of the quality of the end product, …

Stability Of Discrete-Time Matrix Polynomials, Khanh Tu Ngo, Kelvin T. Erickson Jan 1997

Stability Of Discrete-Time Matrix Polynomials, Khanh Tu Ngo, Kelvin T. Erickson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper derives conditions for the stability of discrete-time systems that can be modeled by a vector difference equation, where the variables are m x 1 vectors and the coefficients are m x m matrices. Stability of the system is related to the locations of the roots of the determinant of a real m x m matrix polynomial of nth order. In this case, sufficient conditions for the system to be stable are derived. The conditions are imposed on the infinity norm of two matrices constructed from the coefficient matrices and do not require the computation of the determinant polynomial. …

The New--But Is It Improved?--Power System, Mariesa Crow Jan 1997

The New--But Is It Improved?--Power System, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the author examines the effect that deregulation will have on the US power system. The paper details how the electric power industry in the USA is undergoing major changes, both politically and technically, as a result of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's Orders 888 and 889 issued in 1996. These orders essentially deregulate the transmission network, allowing producers and customers access to the network for electricity transactions.

Adaptive Critic Based Neurocontroller For Autolanding Of Aircrafts, S. N. Balakrishnan, Gaurav Saini Jan 1997

Adaptive Critic Based Neurocontroller For Autolanding Of Aircrafts, S. N. Balakrishnan, Gaurav Saini

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, adaptive critic based neural networks have been used to design a controller for a benchmark problem in aircraft autolanding. The adaptive critic control methodology comprises successive adaptations of two neural networks, namely action and critic network (which approximate the Hamiltonian equations associated with optimal control theory) until closed loop optimal control is achieved. The autolanding problem deals with longitudinal dynamics of an aircraft which is to be landed in a specified touchdown region (within acceptable ranges of speed, pitch angle and sink rate) in the presence of wind disturbances and gusts using elevator deflection as the control …

Liability Of Suppliers Of Natural Raw Materials And The Restatement (Third) Of Torts: Products Liability--A First Step Toward Sound Public Policy, M. Stuart Madden Jan 1997

Liability Of Suppliers Of Natural Raw Materials And The Restatement (Third) Of Torts: Products Liability--A First Step Toward Sound Public Policy, M. Stuart Madden

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

From its inception, the law governing liability for damage or injuries caused by defective products has pertained to potential liability for products that have been processed, finished, or fabricated. Naturally occurring raw materials, for the most part, have been considered beyond doctrinal concern, largely because characterizing a merchantable raw material, such as copper or pigiron, as defective is conceptually difficult. Nevertheless, certain doctrines that developed for the application of products liability to other products have gained sporadic application to naturally occurring raw materials, including the sophisticated purchaser defense, the bulk supplier defense, and the ingredient supplier defense. Madden argues that …

[Introduction To] The Oxford Book Of The American South: Testimony, Memory, And Fiction, Edward L. Ayers, Bradley C. Mittendorf Jan 1997

[Introduction To] The Oxford Book Of The American South: Testimony, Memory, And Fiction, Edward L. Ayers, Bradley C. Mittendorf

Bookshelf

Resonating with the testimony of slaves and slaveholders, the powerful and the powerless, women and men, black people and white, The Oxford Book of the American South combines the most telling fiction and nonfiction produced in the South from the late eighteenth century to the present. The first anthology to put short stories, novels, autobiographies, diaries, memoirs, and journalism together, this collection is a rich and varied record of life below the Mason Dixon line. We see the antebellum period both from the perspective of those who experienced it first-hand, such as Thomas Jefferson and Harriet Jacobs, as well as …

Hierarchical Classification As An Aid To Browsing, John R. Rose, Caroline M. Eastman Jan 1997

Hierarchical Classification As An Aid To Browsing, John R. Rose, Caroline M. Eastman

Faculty Publications

An approach to browsing large chemical reaction databases is presented. The method that is described builds on earlier work in which unsupervised hierarchical classification was used to extract generalizations of reaction classes from reaction databases for use in reaction knowledge bases. The method described in this paper involves classification based on both semantic and topological features. It supports the creation of deep hierarchies in which succeeding levels represent increasing degrees of abstraction. The creation of a hierarchy allows the user to quickly locate interesting items or classes of items by performing a tree traversal as opposed to sequentially scanning a …

An Analog Integrated Circuit For Continuous-Time Gain And Offset Calibration Of Sensor Arrays, Yu Ming Chiang, John G. Harris Jan 1997

An Analog Integrated Circuit For Continuous-Time Gain And Offset Calibration Of Sensor Arrays, Yu Ming Chiang, John G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Parameter variations cause unavoidable nonuniformities in Infra-Red Focal Plane Arrays and other integrated sensors. Since these nonuniformities change slowly with time, calibrating sensors one-time only is not suitable-much more frequent calibration is required. We have developed an algorithm that continually calibrates an array of sensors that contain gain and offset variations. This algorithm has been mapped to analog hardware and designed and fabricated with a 2um CMOS technology. Measured results from the chip show that the system achieves invariance to gain and offset variations of the input signal.

Private Actors & (And) Structural Balance: Militia & (And) The Free Rider Problem In Private Provision Of Law, Andrew P. Morriss Jan 1997

Private Actors & (And) Structural Balance: Militia & (And) The Free Rider Problem In Private Provision Of Law, Andrew P. Morriss

Faculty Scholarship

Miners in Montana in the 1860s created "common law," nongovernmental legal institutions which dispensed millions of dollars of public resources to private individuals. Armed Vigilantes rode across the territory administering private justice. They hung twenty-two men, including an elected sheriff and his deputies. Even as Montana finally became a territory in May 1864, "it nevertheless chose still to regard itself as back of beyond, as a remote, independent, and untouchable empire. It resented and continually obstructed, ungratefully, the federal controls which accompanied the blessings of territorial recognition." Such activities were not limited to the early days of the Montana Territory: …

Selecting The "Best" Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Timothy R. Anderson, Akin Uslu Jan 1997

Selecting The "Best" Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Timothy R. Anderson, Akin Uslu

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the most important strengths of Data Envelopment Analysis, (DEA), is that it allows almost complete freedom in the way that each decision making unit, (DMU), evaluates itself relative to its peers. This tends to result in many DMUs receiving a high efficiency score. Particularly when DEA is applied in a decision making context, it may be desirable to select a single option rather than determining the set of efficient alternatives in ranking efficient DMU or to Assist selecting a "best" DMU. Several extensions to DEA have been proposed and used. This paper examines, compares, and integrates a variety …

A Finite Element Formulation For Aft Fan Duct Acoustic Radiation, Walter Eversman Jan 1997

A Finite Element Formulation For Aft Fan Duct Acoustic Radiation, Walter Eversman

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A finite element code has been developed for the prediction of the radiated acoustic field in and around the aft fan duct of a turbofan engine. The acoustic field is modeled based on the assumption that the steady flow in and around the nacelle is irrotational as is the acoustic perturbation. The geometry of the nacelle is axisymmetric, and the acoustic source is harmonic and decomposed into its angular harmonics. The steady flow is computed on the acoustic mesh and provides data for the acoustic calculations. The jet is included in the steady flow potential flow model by separating the …

Analysis Of Rockbolt Reinforcement Using Beam-Column Theory, Samit Roy, Anand B. Rajagopalan Jan 1997

Analysis Of Rockbolt Reinforcement Using Beam-Column Theory, Samit Roy, Anand B. Rajagopalan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A simple analytical procedure that applies classical beam-column theory for evaluating passive rock bolt roof reinforcement is presented in this paper. The analytical model is derived from first principles and is capable modelling any number of reinforcing bolts. Each rock bolt is modelled as a linear spring and the model allows for non-uniform bolt spacing. In this study the rock beam is assumed to be isotropic and linearly elastic for the sake of simplicity. However, the analytical model can be extended to include anisotropic rock mass as well as inelastic material behavior. The solution to the couped set of governing …

Radiative Heating In Scramjet Combustors, Harlan F. Nelson Jan 1997

Radiative Heating In Scramjet Combustors, Harlan F. Nelson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Currently, there is considerable interest in scramjet engines for hypersonic aircraft and missiles. This paper presents preliminary calculations of the radiative heating of the walls of scramjet combustion chambers. The analysis assumes isothermal, constant property flow fields that are representative of actual combustor flow fields. The fuel is H2, and N2 is taken as inert. Temperature in the combustor is on the order of 2000-3000 K and the pressure is of the order of 5 atm. The combustion products consist mainly of H2O and OH. These gases are strong radiators in the infrared. Radiation heating can be significant because of …

Metropolitan Growth And The Local Role In Surface Water Resource Protection In The Lake Erie Basin, Wendy A. Kellogg Jan 1997

Metropolitan Growth And The Local Role In Surface Water Resource Protection In The Lake Erie Basin, Wendy A. Kellogg

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Local governments can play an important role in protecting surface water resources through their compliance with federal and state regulations and through their own land use planning and management practices. Despite 30 years of water quality initiatives in the Lake Erie basin, nonpoint source runoff from urban and urbanizing lands remains a problem. Loss of riparian corridor integrity is increasing as urban areas in the Lake Erie basin experience areal growth. The use and management of land, predominantly a local responsibility, directly affects surface water resources. The role that local governments play in protecting surface water resources was studied in …

The Utility Of International Law For Protecting Women's Health Rights, Vanessa Merton Jan 1997

The Utility Of International Law For Protecting Women's Health Rights, Vanessa Merton

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

There is one area, however, where international law seems to hold promise; certain cultural practices that pose special, direct threats to the lives and health of women (although male infants and children often share women's vulnerability in this regard). I have in mind sexual slavery, coercive prostitution and pornographic exploitation, rape, compulsory marriage, coerced impregnation and its converse, coerced abortion and sterilization; spousal abuse, dowry deaths and coerced suicide, female infanticide and sex-specific abortion. All of these practices are the product not of microbes, poor hygiene, or a lack of health care, but of deliberate human behavior. All these practices …

Incentives, Information, And Winner's Curse In Construction Industry Bidding, Gerald H. Williams, Timothy R. Anderson Jan 1997

Incentives, Information, And Winner's Curse In Construction Industry Bidding, Gerald H. Williams, Timothy R. Anderson

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper investigates the relationship between incentives, information and winner's curse in the bidding for construction industry contracts. The approach uses both simple Monte Carlo simulations and bidding experiments to show the effects of changing levels of information (in terms of variance) and incentive (in terms of risk share) on the winner's curse.
