Basic Immunology, Lynn F. Woodward Dec 1997

Basic Immunology, Lynn F. Woodward

Range Beef Cow Symposium

The immune system can be thought of as a surveillance system to discriminate between “self" and "non-self." From simple life forms such as insects to advanced life forms such as humans, all living organisms have some form of host defense mechanism. Most have multiple, overlapping mechanisms ranging from very non-specific resistance to highly specific immunity. White blood cells forming "pus" around a splinter is representative of non-specific host resistance to invasion while immunity to IBR virus after vaccination or following recovery from active infection is representative of specific active immunity.

These host defense systems protect livestock and man from the …

Nucleotide Or Nucleoside Photoaffinity Compound Modified Antibodies, Methods For Their Manufacture And Use Thereof As Diagnostics And Therapeutics, Boyd E. Haley, Heinz Köhler, Krishnan Rajagopalan, Gabriela Pavlinkova

Chemistry Faculty Patents

Sites on antibodies having affinity for photoaffinity compounds, in particular purine or azidopurine containing compounds are taught. These sites provide for the site-specific attachment of nucleotide photoaffinity compounds to antibodies, e.g., ATP- or GTP-analog photoaffinity compounds by photochemical means. These nucleotide photoaffinity compounds may additionally be attached to molecules having a desired therapeutic or diagnostic activity, and the resultant conjugates used as diagnostics or therapeutics.

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Like other arteriviruses, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is shed in semen, a feature that is critical for the venereal transmission of this group of viruses. In spite of its epidemiological importance, little is known of the association of PRRSV or other arteriviruses with gonadal tissues. We experimentally infected a group of boars with PRRSV 12068-96, a virulent field strain. By combined use of in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, we detected infection by PRRSV in the testes of these boars. The PRRSV testicular replication in testis centers on two types of cells: (i) epithelial germ cells of the …

Cd40-Mediated Signaling Of Interleukin-1(Beta) Synthesis And Rescue From Apoptosis In Monocytes: Modulation By Il-4 And Il-10, Jonathan C. Poe Dec 1997

Cd40-Mediated Signaling Of Interleukin-1(Beta) Synthesis And Rescue From Apoptosis In Monocytes: Modulation By Il-4 And Il-10, Jonathan C. Poe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To date, the cellular mechanisms involved in the progression of diseases characterized by chronic inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), remain largely unknown. However, cell-to-cell contact interactions between CD4+ helper T (Th) cells and monocytes have been implicated in the induction and maintenance of pro-inflammatory cytokine synthesis that is characteristic to the pathogenesis of RA. One such cytokine produced during monocyte-Th cell contact is interleukin (IL)-1 β, a mediator directly involved in the characteristic tissue destruction that occurs in the synovia of individuals with RA. Previous studies in our laboratories have shown that ligation of CD40 on monocytes with CD40 …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

We report the results of molecular analysis of 39 isolates of Cryptosporidium parvum from human and bovine sources in nine human outbreaks and from bovine sources from a wide geographic distribution. All 39 isolates could be divided into either of two genotypes, on the basis of genetic polymorphism observed at the thrombospondin-related adhesion protein (TRAP-C2) locus. Genotype 1 was observed only in isolates from humans. Genotype 2, however, was seen in calf isolates and in isolates from a subset of human patients who reported direct exposure to infected cattle or consumed items thought to be contaminated with cattle feces. Furthermore, …

Evolution Of The Schistosomes (Digenea: Schistosomatoidea): The Origin Of Dioecy And Colonization Of The Venous System, Thomas R. Platt, Daniel R. Brooks Dec 1997

Evolution Of The Schistosomes (Digenea: Schistosomatoidea): The Origin Of Dioecy And Colonization Of The Venous System, Thomas R. Platt, Daniel R. Brooks

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Trematodes of the family Schistosomatidae are considered venous system specialists whose sister group is the vascular system generalists (Spirorchidae) of turtles. Colonization of homeotherms by vascular trematodes required precision egg laying near the conduit for egg passage to the external environment and avoidance of pathogenesis that might result in the premature death of the host. Evolution of dioecy from the hermaphroditic condition may have proceeded through androdioecy in which hermaphrodites were specialized for precision egg placement in the vascular system and larger adults became functional males. The evolution of nuclear genes suppressing female function along with cytoplasmic genes suppressing male …

Limited Range Of Genetic Variation In Echinococcus Multilocularis, Heinz Rinder, Robert L. Rausch, Kenichi Takahashi, Hartmuth Kopp, Angelika Thomschke, Thomas Löscher Dec 1997

Limited Range Of Genetic Variation In Echinococcus Multilocularis, Heinz Rinder, Robert L. Rausch, Kenichi Takahashi, Hartmuth Kopp, Angelika Thomschke, Thomas Löscher

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

DNA sequencing of 1.3 kb of rDNA containing both internal transcribed spacers (ITS1, ITS2) and adjoining rRNA coding regions in each of 11 Echinococcus multilocularis isolates from Germany, Japan, and Alaska resulted in identical nucleotide sequences except for a single polymorphic locus 54 bp upstream of the 3' end of the 18S coding region, separating Eurasian isolates from an Alaskan isolate. The same base substitution was found in each of two additional isolates from Alaska. The distribution of the resulting genotypes with regard to their origin is highly significant (>99.9%) and corresponds to the traditional subspecies Echinococcus multilocularis multilocularis …

Distribution Of The Cytotoxin Gene In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Robert Charles Osgood Dec 1997

Distribution Of The Cytotoxin Gene In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Robert Charles Osgood

Master's Theses

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic Gram negative facultative anaerobe. It is found primarily in the soil, but is ubiquitous in nature. The clinical significance of the organism is attributed to its innate resistance to antibiotics and its ability to survive in the presence of compounds that would be lethal to other organisms. Hospitals constitute one such environment where Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been found to exist in weak antiseptic solutions. hand creams. and hydrotherapy tanks. The hospital is also a place where patients who are severely burned. have cystic fibrosis. or whose resistance is otherwise compromised are at an increased risk …

Anthroposophic Perspectives In Primary Care, Ira S. Cantor Md, Steven Rosenzweig Md Dec 1997

Anthroposophic Perspectives In Primary Care, Ira S. Cantor Md, Steven Rosenzweig Md

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

A core challenge of contemporary medicine is to integrate the technological successes of biomedical science with a comprehensive under-standing of the physical, psychosocial, ecological, and spiritual dimensions of health and illness. Toward this end, bridges are being created between conventional medicine and alternative systems of healing which reflect a holistic model of the human being. Even when both conventional and complementary approaches are used side-by-side in the same patient, they remain separate in their basic assumptions and goals. Today's mechanistic disease model is cut off from such notions as life-energy, consciousness, and spirituality, so integral to many alternative paradigms. Anthroposophically …

A Dichotomous Role For Nitric Oxide During Acute Toxoplasma Gondii Infection In Mice, Imtiaz A. Khan, Joseph D. Schwartzman, Tadashi Matsuura, Lloyd H. Kasper Dec 1997

A Dichotomous Role For Nitric Oxide During Acute Toxoplasma Gondii Infection In Mice, Imtiaz A. Khan, Joseph D. Schwartzman, Tadashi Matsuura, Lloyd H. Kasper

Dartmouth Scholarship

Production of nitric oxide by macrophages is believed to be an important microbicidal mechanism for a variety of intracellular pathogens, including Toxoplasma gondii. Mice with a targeted disruption of the inducible nitric oxide synthase gene (iNOS) were infected orally with T. gondii tissue cysts. Time to death was prolonged compared with parental controls. Histologic analysis of tissue from infected mice showed scattered small foci of inflammation with parasites in various tissues of iNOS−/− mice, whereas tissue from the parental C57BL/6 mice had more extensive tissue inflammation with few visible parasites. In particular, extensive ulceration and necrosis of distal small …
