Behavior Management In Children With Autism And Related Disorders, Lisa J. Miller Jan 1997

Behavior Management In Children With Autism And Related Disorders, Lisa J. Miller

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Children with autism and related disorders commonly suffer from developmental delays and physical impairments. These often require services such as physical and occupational therapy. The behavioral symptoms these children display can pose an additional challenge to therapy sessions, requiring therapists to spend time dealing with the behaviors rather than focusing on the treatment.

The purpose of the study is to review the literature on autism and related disorders and to provide effective means of behavior management to achieve more effective therapy sessions. This paper will discuss physical therapy interventions such as sensory integration and deep touch proprioception, and how these …

Fatigue : Investigation Of A Human Factor For Aviation Curricula, Thomas R. Weitzel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This descriptive study investigated the perceived problem of human fatigue as an operational consideration within the U.S. air carrier industry and the status of fatigue as content within U.S. aviation education/training curricula. An instrument was developed and expert-validated for self-completion by the following three groups (each with its sample size): (a) aviation higher education, represented by a mailing to 50 individuals; (b) air carrier training/management, represented by a mailing to 50 individuals; and (c) a professional training group of 58 general aviation flight instructors, with administration by the researcher during scheduled company meetings. Parasites, Porotic Hyperostosis, And The Implications Of Changing Perspectives, T. D. Holland, Michael J. O'Brien Jan 1997

Parasites, Porotic Hyperostosis, And The Implications Of Changing Perspectives, T. D. Holland, Michael J. O'Brien

History Faculty Publications (Archived)

Cribra orbitalia and porotic hyperostosis traditionally have been viewed (at least by archaeologists) as indicators of chronic iron deficiency anemia resulting from a dependency upon maize. Recent interpretations, however, have sought to explain these conditions as an evolutionary, adaptive response to intestinal parasites rather than as a consequence of poor nutrition. Thus diet is eliminated as a contributing factor. This model, however, adopts too simplistic a view of evolution. Furthermore, it concomitantly severs the well-documented link that exists between cranial lesions and cereal-based subsistence. A more realistic approach would be to incorporate both diet and pathogens (bacterial as well as …

Varietal Differences In The Total And Enantiomeric Composition Of Theanine In Tea, K. Helen Ekborg-Ott, Andre Taylor, Daniel W. Armstrong Jan 1997

Varietal Differences In The Total And Enantiomeric Composition Of Theanine In Tea, K. Helen Ekborg-Ott, Andre Taylor, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Theanine is the main amino acid component in tea. It usually constitutes between 1 and 2% of the dry weight of the tea leaves. It is as prevalent in tea as all other free amino acids combined. Both enantiomers of theanine were found to have a similar sweet taste, with little or no aftertaste. It was found that black and half-green teas (except for Formosa Oolong) contained as much, or more, theanine as green teas. No correlation was found between the absolute concentration of theanine in tea and its enantiomeric composition. An inverse correlation was found between certain grades of …
