Imitation Pedagogy: The Ongoing Debate, Nancy Joyce Snow

Theses Digitization Project

Imitation was one of the five teaching methods passed down from the Greeks and was, from antiquity down to the nineteenth century, highly respected among scholars and educators. However, imitation has lost status as a viable pedagogy, and especially perhaps in the field of composition studies.

The Best Of Both Worlds: Financing Software Filters For The Classroom And Avoiding First Amendment Liability, 16 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 659 (1998), Peter G. Drever Iii

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

As the Internet expands, educational institutions have become interested in the medium for the purpose of expanding learning opportunities. Information that may be objectionable to some members of the community, however, would then be available to children in schools with Internet access. Attempts to regulate the content of the Internet have yet to pass a First Amendment challenge. Concern over what children will be exposed to when the Internet is introduced in the classroom is currently being addressed by educators and legislators alike. The Communications Decency Act was the first to attempt to address the issue of Internet access in …

Suicide And Family Survival, Nancy K. Veldey Jan 1997

Suicide And Family Survival, Nancy K. Veldey

Graduate Research Papers

Early one beautiful summer morning, a twenty-two-year-old young man, who was loved by his family and liked by many friends, went to his place of employment in the town where he was attending college, and for reasons known, or perhaps not known, only to him, chose to kill himself by means of hanging. His decision not only ended his life; it impacted the lives of others in a way that will have an effect on them, and those with whom they associate, for a long time, if not forever. His family was left not only with the task of dealing …

Ultrastructural Observations Of Peri-Implant Mucosa Morphology Around Different Types Of Abutment In Humans, C. Piacentini, P. Lanzarini, R. Rodriguez Y Baena, S. Rizzo, C. Brusotti Jan 1997

Ultrastructural Observations Of Peri-Implant Mucosa Morphology Around Different Types Of Abutment In Humans, C. Piacentini, P. Lanzarini, R. Rodriguez Y Baena, S. Rizzo, C. Brusotti

Cells and Materials

Scanning electron microscopy (SFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to examine the morphological aspects of peri-implant mucosa around abutments of differing geometry (biconical and cylindrical) and of differing surface micromorphology. The samples were taken from seven patients who had undergone implant surgery at least one year prior to the study. In samples from biconical abutments, SEM of the sulcular epithelium showed that it consisted of flattened polygonal cells with a surface resembling a honeycomb. Superficial desquamation was rarely found. In contrast, in the samples from cylindrical abutments, the sulcular epithelium showed extensive desquamation and surface irregularity, but not …

The Dominican Republic-- After The Caudillos, Emelio Betances, Hobard Spalding Jan 1997

The Dominican Republic-- After The Caudillos, Emelio Betances, Hobard Spalding

Sociology Faculty Publications

The Dominican Republic played a major role in the early history of NACLA, and it is therefore fitting that the country be re-examined in one of NACLA's thirtieth anniversary issues. It was largely in response to the 1965 U.S. invasion and occupation of the island that a group of academics, clergy and radical activists organized a 1966 conference called the North American Congress on Latin America. The "congress" stayed together beyond the conference, and in February, 1967, began publishing the NACLA Newsletter, which evolved into today's NACLA Report on the Americas.

Accounting History: The Contribution Of Osamu Zojima, John K. Courtis Jan 1997

Accounting History: The Contribution Of Osamu Zojima, John K. Courtis

Accounting Historians Journal

In 1987, Professor Kojima published his 16 chapter Japanese version of Introduction to Accounting History. His intention was to prepare an English translation, but he died on 21 February 1989 from cardiac infarction having reached the middle of the 13th chapter with an unfinished handwritten first draft. After this draft was subsequently typed, the unfinished portion of the English translation was completed by Mr E. Usami. Consultation with Professor B. S. Yamey resulted in the correction of errors by Professor Kojima's loyal colleagues, Professors Yoshihiro Hirabayashi (Osaka City University), Hiroyasu Okitsu (Kinki University) and Tsuneo Nakano (Kobe University). The translation …

Mixing Oil And Water: The Government's Mistaken Use Of The Medicare Anti-Kickback Statute In False Claims Act Prosecutions, Robert Salcido Jan 1997

Mixing Oil And Water: The Government's Mistaken Use Of The Medicare Anti-Kickback Statute In False Claims Act Prosecutions, Robert Salcido

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

In 1996, billing integrity generated a great deal of debate and litigation in the health care arena. Significantly, the federal government views a violation of the Anti-Kickback Act as a basis for a False Claims Act action. While federal courts are split on the issue, the author strongly contends that using the False Claims Act to do what the Anti-Kickback Act was intended to do is inappropriate, given Congress' intention in enacting each legislation.

The Government's Use Of The Civil False Claims Act To Enforce Standards Of Quality Of Care: Integrity Or The Heavy Hand Of The 800-Pound Gorilla, Michael M. Mustokoff, Jody A. Werner, Michael S. Yecies Jan 1997

The Government's Use Of The Civil False Claims Act To Enforce Standards Of Quality Of Care: Integrity Or The Heavy Hand Of The 800-Pound Gorilla, Michael M. Mustokoff, Jody A. Werner, Michael S. Yecies

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

Fraud and abuse issues abound in health care. A new, rather unique assertion is that submitting a bill for health care that is inadequate constitutes a violation of the Civil False Claims Act. The authors contend that there are more effective and appropriate ways to address poor quality of care, and that using the False Claims Act in this matter is like fitting a square peg in a round hole.

Directors' Duty Obtain A Fair Price In The Conversion Of Nonprofit Hospitals, Eric S. Tower Jan 1997

Directors' Duty Obtain A Fair Price In The Conversion Of Nonprofit Hospitals, Eric S. Tower

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

Boards of Directors of tax-exempt hospitals are increasingly struggling with whether to convert their facilities to for-profit status. Other than the traditional duties of loyalty and fair dealings imposed upon directors, there is currently little guidance to assure that boards obtain a fair price for the hospital in such conversions. The author provides recommendations to assure proper valuation.

Post-Decision Diagnosis: Medical Device Preemption Alive And Mostly Well After Medtronic, Inc. V. Lohr, Scott W. Sayler, Steven M. Thomas Jan 1997

Post-Decision Diagnosis: Medical Device Preemption Alive And Mostly Well After Medtronic, Inc. V. Lohr, Scott W. Sayler, Steven M. Thomas

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

In Medtronic, Inc. v. Lohr, the United States Supreme Court, in a five-to-four split, held that the Medical Device Amendments of 1976 did not preempt state tort claims against a pacemaker manufacturer. A careful reading of the factually specific holding of this case suggests that manufacturers of medical devices distributed pursuant to premarket approval requirements and investigational device exemption can still successfully raise preemption as a defense to state common law tort claims.

To Resuscitate Or Not ... In The Operating Room: The Need For Hospital Policies For Surgeons Regarding Dnr Orders, Vassyl A. Lonchyna Jan 1997

To Resuscitate Or Not ... In The Operating Room: The Need For Hospital Policies For Surgeons Regarding Dnr Orders, Vassyl A. Lonchyna

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

As more Americans have become aware of end-of-life planning, health care professionals are faced with more "Do Not Resuscitate" orders. A patient with a terminal condition who has signed such an order may enter the operating room for a surgical procedure; few hospitals have developed protocols to assist the medical staff. In most hospitals, it is unclear whether the medical staff should honor the "DNR" or follow the traditional resuscitation protocol of the operating room.
