Japanese Fdi, Exports And Technology Transfer To China, Elspeth Thomson Mar 1997

Japanese Fdi, Exports And Technology Transfer To China, Elspeth Thomson

CAPS Working Paper Series

The purposes of this paper are to examine the relationship between Japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) and Japanese exports to China since the Open Door Policy, and to make some observations about Chinese expectations for and assessment of Japanese technology transferal. Multiple regression analysis is carried out and it is found that in most sectors, FDI was not an influencing factor on exports. In the 1980s it appears that Japanese investors were most interested in producing goods for export, but in the 1990s, they have become more interested in selling their products to the Chinese market. The Chinese Government had …

Varity Corp. V. Howe: Will It Cause An Increase In Litigation Against Employers Who Administer Erisa Plans?, Tina Knight Kukanza

Mercer Law Review

In Varity Corp. v. Howe, the United States Supreme Court held that section 502(a)(3) of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 ("ERISA") authorizes an award of relief to an individual for a breach of fiduciary duty by the administrator of an employee benefit plan covered by ERISA and affirmed the relief awarded.

Wetland Loss In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico: Multiple Working Hypotheses, R. Eugene Turner Mar 1997

Wetland Loss In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico: Multiple Working Hypotheses, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

I examined four hypotheses about causes for the dramatically high coastal wetland losses (0.86% yr−1) in the northern Gulf of Mexico: an extensive dredged canal and spoil bank network, a decline in sediments in the Mississippi River during the 1950s, Mississippi River navigation and flood protection levees, and salinity changes. Natural factors contributing to these habitat changes include eustatic sea-level rise and geological compaction, which appear to have remained relatively constant this century, although variation does occur. These four hypotheses were tested using data on land-to-water changes in 15-min quadrangle maps inventoried for four intervals between the 1930s and 1990. …

A Cultural Exchange: Singapore And The United States Can Learn From Each Other In Restructuring Social Security Plans, Ken J. Moyle Mar 1997

A Cultural Exchange: Singapore And The United States Can Learn From Each Other In Restructuring Social Security Plans, Ken J. Moyle

Washington International Law Journal

Singapore and the United States approach the concept of retirement income replacement from different directions. The United States relies on the OASDI component of the Social Security Act, a tax-based intergenerational transfer program, while Singapore operates under the Central Provident Fund Act, which requires workers and their employers to contribute to a compulsory savings scheme. Elements of each program conflict with the cultural values of the society it serves, and each society could benefit from adopting certain components and underlying concepts of the other's national retirement plan.

Special Maneuver For Removal Of An Impacted Bronchial Foreign Body At Thoracotomy, Saima H. Khan, Asad Mian, Qaisar M. Khan, Naeem-Uz-Zafar Khan

Department of Emergency Medicine

Tracheobronchial foreign body aspiration is a common, but often unobserved event in children. A delay in diagnosis can lead to difficulty in removal of the aspirated object. The present case report highlights a special intraoperative maneuver at thoracotomy that was adopted to remove an impacted foreign body that could not be removed at bronchoscopy.

Effects Of Lipoproteins On Cyclo-Oxygenase And Lipoxygenase Pathways In Human Platelets, S A. Saeed, R A. Memon, A H. Gilani, B H. Shah

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

The products of arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism in platelets play an important role in platelet shape change, adhesion and aggregation which may participate in the pathogenesis of ischemic heart disease and thrombosis. Since lipoproteins are also involved in the pathogenesis of thrombo-embolic disorders, the effect of human lipoproteins (HDL, LDL, VLDL) on AA metabolism in human platelets was investigated. Lipoproteins were separated by density gradient zonal ultracentrifugation. The effects of lipoproteins on production of AA metabolites in human platelets i.e., thromboxane A2 (TXA2) and hydroxy-eicosatetraenoic acids (HETEs) were examined using radiometric thin layer chromatography coupled with automated data integrator system. …
