Investigations Of Health Status And Body Condition Of Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) In The Gulf Of Alaska, Brian Scott Fadely Apr 1997

Investigations Of Health Status And Body Condition Of Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) In The Gulf Of Alaska, Brian Scott Fadely

Marine Biology

Harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) declines during the past 20 years in the Kodiak Island and Prince William Sound regions contrast with stable or slightly increasing populations in southeastern areas of Alaska. Aspects of health status and body condition were investigated to test the hypothesis that these declines were driven by nutritional limitation, and to determine whether recent differential population trajectories among Kodiak Island, Prince William Sound, and southeast Alaska could have health-related components. For comparisons between 1992-96, three aspects of health status were examined; blood chemistry, blubber distribution and quantity; and blubber quality. Clinical ranges of plasma chemistries and hematologies …

Structural Analysis Of The Alaska Economy: A Perspective From 1997, Scott Goldsmith Apr 1997

Structural Analysis Of The Alaska Economy: A Perspective From 1997, Scott Goldsmith

ISER Reports

The structure of the Alaska economy is reflected in the share of personal income and employment attributable to each of the BASIC industrial sectors and other external sources of household purchasing power. We identify twelve activities upon which the size and composition of the Alaska economy depends and trace their growth over time. Although an oversimplification of reality, the economic base model is a useful tool for studying the structure of the Alaska economy. In the economic base model, BASIC activities are the source of economic growth for the regional economy. Our analysis offers a consistent methodology but is not …

Integrating Technology Into The Library Curriculum Of Grades Four Through Eight For The Lower Alloways Creek Elementary School, Deborah A. Wesolek Apr 1997

Integrating Technology Into The Library Curriculum Of Grades Four Through Eight For The Lower Alloways Creek Elementary School, Deborah A. Wesolek

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a library curriculum guide for grades four through eight for the Lower Alloways Creek Elementary School, Salem, New Jersey.

Prior to this guide, the library curriculum for Lower Alloways Creek Elementary School consisted of an outdated skills array. It no longer met the needs of the students or the staff of the school. With the addition of an automated circulation and catalog system, as well as CD-ROM, and the Internet, it became clear that the curriculum must be redeveloped, revised and thoroughly updated to include these new technologies. This will assist in …

Kids Count Alaska 1997, Norman Dinges, Claudia Lampman, Ann Garret, Mera Atlis, Olga Efimova, Alexandra Hill, Barbara Minton

ISER Reports

From 1991 through 1995, nearly 55,400 babies were born in Alaska. The overwhelming majority (89 percent) were born to mothers at least 20 years old. But that still leaves more than 6,000 babies born to teenage mothers during the first half of the 1990s. And more than a third of those babies were born to mothers under 18 years old. Teenage mothers and their children face economic disadvantages (see Births to Teens indicator), but they also face health risks. Half the youngest mothers (15 and under) and nearly four in ten older teenagers get inadequate prenatal care. Even among mothers …

Kodiak Population Projections, Scott Goldsmith, Alexandra Hill Apr 1997

Kodiak Population Projections, Scott Goldsmith, Alexandra Hill

ISER Reports

The City of Kodiak asked the Institute of Social and Economic Research to generate population projections through 2020 for the city and the adjacent area (Service Area l) served by city sewer. The projections currently used in planning a new wastewater treatment facility extremely high to many knowledgeable observers. ISER reviewed the existing population projections and generated an independent set of projections based on our explicit analysis of the Kodiak economy and demography. In the projections for Kodiak Island Borough. tourism and seafood are the driving factors in explaining projected population growth. Other wage and salary and federal government categories …

The Development Of Diving Behavior And Physiology In Juvenile Weddell Seals (Leptonychotes Weddellii) In Mcmurdo Sound, Antarctica, Jennifer Moss Burns

Marine Biology

The development of diving behavior and physiology in juvenile Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica was studied in order to determine the effects of age, body size, and condition on diving ability. During the austral summers of 1992, 1993, and 1994, the diving behavior of 39 pups and 15 yearlings was monitored using time depth recorders (TDRs). In addition, 26 pups were equipped with satellite-linked time depth recorders (SLTDRs) to track fall and winter diving behavior. Blood samples and morphological measurements were taken at each handling. Pups began to dive within two weeks of birth, and the mean …

Physiology Of The Endocrine, Cardiorespiratory And Nervous Systems In Pinnipeds: Integrative Approach And Biomedical Considerations, Tania Zenteno-Savin Apr 1997

Physiology Of The Endocrine, Cardiorespiratory And Nervous Systems In Pinnipeds: Integrative Approach And Biomedical Considerations, Tania Zenteno-Savin

Marine Biology

This thesis explored several aspects of the hormonal and cardiovascular physiology in pinnipeds (seals and sea lions). Plasma concentrations of the vasoactive hormones angiotensin II (Ang II), arginine vasopressin (AVP, the antidiuretic hormone) and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) were studied in six species of seals and sea lions. Resting levels of AVP, ANP and Ang II in these pinnipeds were similar to those reported for other vertebrate species, including humans. Age-related differences were found in the concentrations of these hormones in seals and sea lions. Geographic differences in hormone concentrations were found in Steller sea lions and harbor seals. To …

Production Of Vascular Aquatic Plants In Wetlands Of Alaska: A Comparative Study, Amy Sophia Larsen Apr 1997

Production Of Vascular Aquatic Plants In Wetlands Of Alaska: A Comparative Study, Amy Sophia Larsen

Biological Sciences

I examined the effects of climate and hydrology on aboveground biomass of macrophytes in wetlands across Alaska by investigating the effects of latitude, July mean air temperature, lake type (open, periodically inundated, and closed), hydrology, and water and sediment chemistry on emergent and submersed vascular plant biomass to determine environmental variables that influenced wetland plant growth. I sampled aboveground biomass of macrophytes in four wetland complexes within Alaska: Kenai and Tetlin National Wildlife Refuges, Minto Flats State Game Refuge, and the Arctic Coastal Plain near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. In addition to peak aboveground biomass, I also collected water and sediment …

Assessment Of The Benthic Environment Following Offshore Placer Gold Mining In Norton Sound, Northeastern Bering Sea, Stephen Carl Jewett Apr 1997

Assessment Of The Benthic Environment Following Offshore Placer Gold Mining In Norton Sound, Northeastern Bering Sea, Stephen Carl Jewett

Fisheries

The effects of placer gold mining on the benthic environment of Norton Sound in the northeastern Bering Sea were assessed. Research focused on red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus, a species with commercial and subsistence importance in the Sound and seasonal occurrence in the mining area. The study addressed mining effects on: (1) benthic macroinvertebrates, many serving as food for this crab, (2) crab relative abundance, distribution, and food, and (3) heavy metal concentrations in crabs. Mining on variable substrates in $<$20 m water depths occurred between 1986-90 during ice-free months when crabs were further offshore. Sampling nearly a year subsequent to mining revealed moderate substrate alteration. Benthic community parameters and abundance of numerically predominant families (e.g., owenid, spionid, and capitellid polychaetes and echinarachniid sand dollars) were reduced in mined areas. Many reduced taxa are known crab prey. Although young individuals of opportunistic taxa predominated, taxa were generally smaller at mined areas. Multi-year surveys of a once-mined area showed continued smoothing of bottom relief. Ordination of taxon abundance from mined (1 yr after mining), recolonizing (2-7 yrs after mining), and unmined stations reflected decreasing station disturbance. At least four years were required for benthos to recover from mining. Mining had a negligible effect on crabs. Crab catches, size, sex, and most prey groups in stomachs were similar between mined and unmined areas. Concentrations of eight heavy metals in muscle and hepatopancreas tissues were generally not different in mined areas. Furthermore, these metals were not different in sediments upcurrent and downcurrent of mining. Concentrations of most metals in tissues showed no temporal trend. Elemental concentrations in muscle tissues were below or within the range of concentrations in red king crabs from other North Pacific locations. Most metals from Norton Sound crabs were well below federal guidance levels for human consumption. Effects from mining were apparent for benthic macrofauna with virtually no effects observed for king crabs. Absence of any demonstrable effects of mining on this crab is primarily a result of the high natural dynamics of the Sound and opportunistic feeding behavior and high mobility of the crab.
