Allowing Intervention By Non-Settling Prps: Not The Environmentally Correct Decision, But One That Is Unavoidable?, Joseph F. Mahoney

Pace Environmental Law Review

Under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), the Environmental Protection Agency may enter into an agreement either to finance the cleanup of hazardous waste sites or to limit the liability of certain parties that may be responsible for the damage at the site in question. These agreements, referred to as consent decrees, generally contain provisions that protect the signing polluters from contribution claims brought by non-settling parties. This Case Note addresses whether non-settling parties should be able to move to intervene in a consent decree under a statutory right of contribution. On this issue, the courts are …

Molecular And Cellular Biology Of Prostate Cancer, El-Nasir Lalani, Marc Elie Laniado, Paul David Abel Jun 1997

Molecular And Cellular Biology Of Prostate Cancer, El-Nasir Lalani, Marc Elie Laniado, Paul David Abel

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Prostate cancer is an enigmatic disease. Although prostatic-intraepithelial neoplasia appears as early as the third decade and as many as 80% of 80 year old men have epithelial cells in their prostate that fit the morphological criteria for cancer, only about 10% of men will ever have the clinical disease and less than 3% will die from it. There have been no significant proven interventions which have altered the natural history of the disease since hormone down regulation was introduced in the 1940s and new research has been poorly supported. There is however an urgent need to develop new criteria …

Genomic Diversity In Staphylococcus Aureus, Bret Max Barton Jun 1997

Genomic Diversity In Staphylococcus Aureus, Bret Max Barton

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Staphylococcus aureus chromosomal DNA from 125 methicillin-resistant and 10 methicillin-sensitive clinical isolates was digested with rare-cutting restriction endonucleases and subjected to pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Thirty-nine distinct genomic macrorestriction patterns (GPs) were identified using SmaI; 29 of these patterns are from methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA).

A dendrogram showing percent similarity among the patterns was constructed which revealed the considerable genomic diversity of the collection even though the isolates had been obtained during outbreaks. The majority of the MRSA formed one broad group with two outbreak subclasses. However, 8 of the 29 MRSA GPs (28%) were diverse.

Digestion with Csp …

The Relationship Of Tooth Size And Arch Form To Arch Depth, Harold C. Avila Jun 1997

The Relationship Of Tooth Size And Arch Form To Arch Depth, Harold C. Avila

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of arch form and tooth size to arch depth measurements of study models (Casts) and their respective lateral cephalometric radiographs (Radiographs) in a population of patients treated to an acceptable occlusion without extraction. One hundred and twenty casts were divided into three tooth size classes within each of four arch form categories. Results showed there was a statistically significant change in the arch depth measurement when tooth size was varied. There was no statistically significant change in the arch depth measurement when arch form was varied. The results showed greater …

Pathophysiology Of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, Jo-Yong Chen, Chang-Zern Hong Jun 1997

Pathophysiology Of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, Jo-Yong Chen, Chang-Zern Hong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) usually develops in a limb after an injury. It is characterized by constant burning pain, allodynia, hyperalgesia, swelling, vasomotor and sudomotor changes. Once RSD is established, successful outcome depends upon early recognition and therapy. The therapies include sympathetic blockade, myofascial trigger point injection, physical therapy, oral corticosteroid, etc. Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain the mechanism responsible for RSD. However, no single hypothesis proposed to date explains all of the features of RSD. It has been recognized for decades that pain may in certain instances be dependent on sympathetic innervation of the area afflicted with …

A Study Of Quality Oriented Model For Hospital Accreditation In Department Of Rehabilitation, Mu-Jung Kao, Mei-Wun Tsai, I-Nan Lien, Kai-Yuan Tang, Yen-Ho Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The present hospital accreditation in Department of Rehabilitation in Taiwan is emphasized in assessing hospital structure instead of total quality consideration. The purpose of this study is to establish a new quality oriented model for hospital accreditatin in department of rehabilitation according to the quality assurance model by Donabedian including structure, process and outcome basis. In this study , an assessment questionnaire for accreditation was designed by Delphi method. The author suggests that hospital accreditation for Department of Rehabilitation should include process and outcome components in addition to structure, and a wide survey of hospital accreditation in Department of Rehabilitation should …

A Survey About The Causes Of Delay Diagnosis And Prognosis In Spinal Tumors, Yi-Hsi Hsieh, Baii-Ja Yang Jun 1997

A Survey About The Causes Of Delay Diagnosis And Prognosis In Spinal Tumors, Yi-Hsi Hsieh, Baii-Ja Yang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Fifty patients with primary spinal tumors operated in Mackay memorial hospital between 1985 and 1995 were reviewed retrospectively. The commonest diagnoses were nerve sheath cell tumors (neurilemmomas and schwannoma) and meningioma. The mean delay in diagnosis was 1.32 years (range: half month to 7 years). The commonest intial symptoms were back pain and numbness over limbs, but later muscle weakness and sphincter disturbances came to predominate. Most patients visited orthopaedic surgeons and neurologist at beginning, and were initially diagnosed as spondylosis or herniated intervertebral disc. Six patients had been received physical therapy under the diagnosis of HIVD or spondylosis before the …

Mixed Nerve Conduction Study Of Brachial Plexus And Its Application On The Diagnosis Of Brachial Plexus Lesion, Jo-Tong Chen, Shu-Min Chen, Thy-Sheng Lin, Ta Shen Kuan, Chang-Zern Hong Jun 1997

Mixed Nerve Conduction Study Of Brachial Plexus And Its Application On The Diagnosis Of Brachial Plexus Lesion, Jo-Tong Chen, Shu-Min Chen, Thy-Sheng Lin, Ta Shen Kuan, Chang-Zern Hong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

This study demonstrates a technique to measure the mixed nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) of the ulnar and median component of the brachial plexus and its application on the diagnosis of brachial plexus lesion. Twenty patients with clinically confirmed pectoralis minor syndrome (Group I) and ten patients with traumatic brachial plexus injury due to traffic accident (Group II) were studied. The ulnar nerve was stimulated at the ulnar groove and the median nerve stimulated at the antecubital fossa of the elbow. The averaged nerve action potentials were simultaneously recorded from both axilla and Erb’s point with surface recording electrodes. MNCV of …

The Study On Cognitive Function In Stroke Patients, Shih-Pin Chao, Shich-Fu Wu Jun 1997

The Study On Cognitive Function In Stroke Patients, Shih-Pin Chao, Shich-Fu Wu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is a simple and effective bed-side screening test for cognitive function. Cognitive defect is frequently encountered clinically in stroke patients, but several sophisticated cognitive function tests are not proper for them. MMSE is used as a tool to investigate the correlation between cognitive function and the severity of brain damage of the stroke patient. A total of 65 patients, who had developed hemiplegia, hemiparesis or cerebellar dysfunction as a result of cerebral vascular disease, were collected in this study. All patients had received MMSE, motor status examination of affected limbs, and brain CT within 3 weeks …

Videofluoroscopic Examination As An Objective Evaluation Tool In Multiple Sclerosis Individuals With Dysphagia --- Casereport, Mei-Li Cheng, Tyng-Guey Wang, Yeun-Chung Chang, Chi-Fen Chang, Jin-Shin Lai, I-Nan Lien Jun 1997

Videofluoroscopic Examination As An Objective Evaluation Tool In Multiple Sclerosis Individuals With Dysphagia --- Casereport, Mei-Li Cheng, Tyng-Guey Wang, Yeun-Chung Chang, Chi-Fen Chang, Jin-Shin Lai, I-Nan Lien

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Multiple sclerosis (MS) may involve different part of central nervous system and is characterized by remission and relapse clinically. However, dysphagia does not happen regularly. The incidence of dysphagia in MS is still in debate. It ranges from 3% to to 33% in limited reports. It could be a persistent or a intermittent symptom with various severity. In previous literature, the evaluation of this disorder was limited in clinical examination and lack of an objective method. We presented a 62-year-old man with MS and dysphagia. He underwent videofluoroscopic examination (VFE) and intensive swallowing training. The VFE demonstrated that the major …
