New York City's Watershed Agreement: A Lesson In Sharing Responsibility, Michael C. Finnegan Jun 1997

New York City's Watershed Agreement: A Lesson In Sharing Responsibility, Michael C. Finnegan

Pace Environmental Law Review

The New York City Watershed Agreement is a commitment of historic proportions. New York City's financial commitments to land acquisition, Partnership Programs, and infrastructure and water quality improvements totals over $1.2 billion. New York State commitments to land acquisition and partnership programs amount to more than $53 million and federal commitments under the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments total $105 million. This level of financial commitment represents New York City's understanding that the financial burden of clean drinking water should be borne primarily by those who enjoy it. The financial package mandated by the Watershed Agreement constitutes a needed …

Western Women’S Travel Writing About The Pacific Islands, Claudia Knapman Jun 1997

Western Women’S Travel Writing About The Pacific Islands, Claudia Knapman

Pacific Studies

Although there has been a revival of interest in nineteenth-century women’s travel writing, this is a neglected area of Pacific scholarship. Though the work of Western women travelers who wrote about the Pacific Islands has been drawn upon by some researchers, this literature has not received attention as a genre, as a body of source material, or as the focus of academic research questions. This article, while neither a detailed analysis of particular writers and their works nor an attempt to delineate the field, uses three categorizations--the realist, the protofeminist, and the orientalist--derived from analyses of women’s travel writing elsewhere …

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

The Telecommunications Act of 1996, signed into law by President Clinton in February, addresses, among many other important subjects, some of the technical problems that have arisen from the increasing popularity of mobile communications. This article will provide an overview of the Act and will focus specifically on the protections afforded a telecommunications provider in § 704 of the Act.

The Birds Collected At San Antonio By A. L. Heermann, Stanley D. Casto Jun 1997

The Birds Collected At San Antonio By A. L. Heermann, Stanley D. Casto

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

A. L. Heermann collected birds at San Antonio from early 1854 until his death in 1865. His recently discovered papers indicate that he kept a fairly large inventory of skins and that he exchanged a series of eggs with Alfred Newton in 1861. Significant records attributed to Heermann include specimens of the Golden-cheeked Warbler (Dendroica chrysoparia), Snowy Owl (Nyctea scandiaca), Buff-breasted Sandpiper (Tryngites subruficollis), and Eskimo Curlew (Nwnenius borealis). A list of all species collected or recorded at San Antonio by Heermann, as well as a previously unpublished photograph of him as a young man are included herein.

CUP Faculty Research

Inhibition of protein synthesis per se does not potentiate the stress-activated protein kinases (SAPKs; also known as cJun NH2-terminal kinases [JNKs]). The protein synthesis inhibitor anisomycin, however, is a potent activator of SAPKs/JNKs. The mechanism of this activation is unknown. We provide evidence that in order to activate SAPK/JNK1, anisomycin requires ribosomes that are translationally active at the time of contact with the drug, suggesting a ribosomal origin of the anisomycin-induced signaling to SAPK/JNK1. In support of this notion, we have found that aminohexose pyrimidine nucleoside antibiotics, which bind to the same region in the 28S rRNA that is the …

Ru 486 Examined: Impact Of A New Technology On An 0 Id Controversy, Gwendolyn Prothro Jun 1997

Ru 486 Examined: Impact Of A New Technology On An 0 Id Controversy, Gwendolyn Prothro

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Abortion is an extremely divisive issue in American politics and culture. Prothro begins this Article by analyzing the current legal standards governing reproduction, which draw a sharp distinction between abortion and contraception. Prothro then examines the function of RU 486, demonstrating that it acts both as a contraceptive and as an abortifacient. Because of this dual capacity, RU 486 does not fit neatly into the current legal framework. Prothro concludes this Article by arguing that RU 486 should force the Supreme Court to create a new framework for the "procreative right." Prothro argues that this new framework should treat the …

That Obscure Object Of Redemption Or 'Reality' In Two Adaptations Of Heinrich Böll., Richard Falcon

University of Dayton Review

The two adaptations I want to consider are: Jean Marie Straub and Danielle Huillet's Nicht versohnt oder Es hilft nur Gewalt wo Gewalt herrscht based on the 1958 novel Billard um halbzehn and released in 1966 and Volker Schlondortrs and Margarethe von Trotta's Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum oder Wie Gewalt entstehen und wohin sie führen kann, based on the Erzählung of the same name and released in 1975.

Planning For The Social And Economic Impact Of Hiv/Aids In Malaysia, Rokiah Ismail Jun 1997

Planning For The Social And Economic Impact Of Hiv/Aids In Malaysia, Rokiah Ismail

Archival Material (1990s)

The HIV epidemic has been spreading throughout the globe for more than 15 years, and it has been with us in Malaysia for at least 12 years . The HIV virus has been slowly but surely spreading throughout our population, without taking heed to social status, educational level, or upbringing. It affects anyone. Never has this world experienced a disease epidemic that lasts for so long without being able to curb its spread and prevent the devastating effects it has on the individual, society and nation. For, to date, there is no cure for this infection and there are no …

Case Studies Of High-Ability Students With Learning Disabilities Who Have Achieved, Sally M. Reis, Terry W. Neu, Joan M. Mcguire

Education Faculty Publications

We used qualitative methods to study 12 young people with learning disabilities who were successful at the college level. The participants reported negative school experiences, verified by their parents and school records, such as social problems, difficulty with teachers, and frustration with certain academic areas. The interaction of their high abilities and their learning disabilities produced a number of negative consequences since their talents were not usually addressed by the school system they attended. However, despite these experiences, participants were able to integrate specific personal traits and special compensation strategies and environmental modifications to succeed in a challenging university setting. …
