The Relationship Between Adult Attachment Styles And Masterson's Delineation Of Personality Disorders, Kristina K. Roberts Jun 1997

The Relationship Between Adult Attachment Styles And Masterson's Delineation Of Personality Disorders, Kristina K. Roberts

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The present study addresses the degree of relationship between adult attachment styles, as assigned by attachment theory, and personality disorders, as delineated by Masterson's developmental self and object relations theory. Relationships between the avoidant-dismissive attachment style and characteristics of the exhibiting narcissistic personality disorder, between the preoccupied attachment style and the borderline personality disorder, and between the avoidantfearful attachment style and the schizoid and avoidant personality disorders were anticipated. Eighty-six individuals involved in the Access Program in Spokane, Washington participated in the study. Thirty-four psychology students at George Fox University also participated in the study as a control group. Participants …

Beyond 4-H Community Service... To Community Service Learning, Allan T. Smith Jun 1997

Beyond 4-H Community Service... To Community Service Learning, Allan T. Smith

Service Learning, General

For more than 70 years Community Service has been an important part of 4-H. So has hands-on, learning-by-doing, that we now call experiential learning. When you put those two ideas together appropriately, the result goes beyond a "feel good" experience: service activities tied closely to what youth are learning positively impact learning, and genuinely help the community.

Epigenetic Silencing Of A Foreign Gene In Nuclear Transformants Of Chlamydomonas, Heriberto D. Cerutti, Anita M. Johnson, Nicholas W. Gillham, John E. Boynton Jun 1997

Epigenetic Silencing Of A Foreign Gene In Nuclear Transformants Of Chlamydomonas, Heriberto D. Cerutti, Anita M. Johnson, Nicholas W. Gillham, John E. Boynton

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

The unstable expression of introduced genes poses a serious problem for the application of transgenic technology in plants. In transformants of the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, expression of a eubacterial aadA gene, conferring spectinomycin resistance, is transcriptionally suppressed by a reversible epigenetic mechanism(s). Variations in the size and frequency of colonies surviving on different concentrations of spectinomycin as well as the levels of transcriptional activity of the introduced transgene(s) suggest the existence of intermediate expression states in genetically identical cells. Gene silencing does not correlate with methylation of the integrated DNA and does not involve large alterations in its …

Gps Tracking For Small Sounding Rockets, Darin K. Fowers Jun 1997

Gps Tracking For Small Sounding Rockets, Darin K. Fowers

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Active areas of research often create the need for improved technology to make observations in a way that has not previously been utilized. Such is the case with middle atmospheric research. This 60 to 120 km region of the atmosphere is too low to be directly probed by satellites and too high to be probed by research airplanes or high altitude balloons. Sounding rockets are the only vehicle that can carry instruments for in situ measurements. Up until now only a few methods have been available to track the location of a sounding rocket - radar skin tracking, radio beacon …

Validation Study Of A Novel Neonatal Pneumotach, Scott A. Kofoed Jun 1997

Validation Study Of A Novel Neonatal Pneumotach, Scott A. Kofoed

Utah Space Grant Consortium

We have developed a pneumotach for measuring respiratory gas flows in humans and or animals. The pneumotach enables the monitoring of respiratory and metabolic function in human subjects over extended periods of time. A bench study was conducted to validate the new pneumotach system against other predicate devices. The pneumotach under test compared well to the predicate devices used.

Development Of A Full-Spectrum Raman Device For Detection Of Environmental Contaminants, David G. Smith Jun 1997

Development Of A Full-Spectrum Raman Device For Detection Of Environmental Contaminants, David G. Smith

Utah Space Grant Consortium

NASA needs sensors to accurately monitor the water and atmospheric quality in its space habitat. Concerns for health and safety necessitate the development of sensors to measure common atmospheric gas concentrations, as well as trace contaminants (low ppm or ppb), including both combustible and noncombustible gases. The University of Utah is developing an enhanced Raman monitoring system to detect airborne, environmental contaminants. We have collected laboratory data to benchmark current laser Raman technology for gas analysis, which provides a reference for future developments. The objective of this project was to design a prototype gas-phase monitor, incorporating new technology that would …

An Exploratory Study: Out-Of-Home Placement Practices In Two Mid-Western Counties, Michael I. Frafjord Jun 1997

An Exploratory Study: Out-Of-Home Placement Practices In Two Mid-Western Counties, Michael I. Frafjord

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this study is to explore the criteria used by social workers in two mid-western counties to place children out of the home. This exploration has been done using a questionnaire that asks questions intended to identify a consensus among workers about the criteria considered to place children. Out-of-home placement for the purpose of this study will include any placement done by a county agency either on an emergency basis or by a plan, started at the beginning of a worker/client relationship. These placements are those in which a child has been removed from the home or from …

A Study Of The Presence Of Bias In Reporting On The Socially Sensitive Issue Of Abortion, Benjamin E. Martin Jun 1997

A Study Of The Presence Of Bias In Reporting On The Socially Sensitive Issue Of Abortion, Benjamin E. Martin

Theses and Dissertations

In a content analysis of news articles and a survey of newspaper editors, this study determined if bias in print media can be detected through the content of news writing.

For the content analysis, news articles dealing with abortion were taken from the New York Times and the Washington Post. The articles, which appeared between Oct. 5 and Nov. 5, 1996, are straight news stories and do not include editorial or opinion articles. Coders were given a series of ten questions to answer for each article. For the survey, editors in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania were surveyed …

Qualitative Research Methods: An Essay Review, Les Mclean, Margaret Myers, Carol Smillie, Dale Vaillancourt Jun 1997

Qualitative Research Methods: An Essay Review, Les Mclean, Margaret Myers, Carol Smillie, Dale Vaillancourt

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

The authors ask us to explore the topic of "qualitative confirmation" in relation to the processes and outcomes of qualitative research practice. The question that directs their inquiry is "how can we make a case that qualitative data or findings warrant the inferences about the topics we are studying?" We review the historical discussion of confirmation theory within the logic of discovery, consider hypothesis generation and methodological decisions as instruments of the research process and then apply the Miller and Fredericks framework of rules to a published report of qualitative research. ...
