A Snapshot Of Individuals And Families Accessing Boston's Emergency Homeless Shelters, 1997, Donna Friedman, Michelle Hayes, John Mcgah, Anthony Roman

Center for Social Policy Publications

This document summarizes key findings from a survey conducted on March 19, 1997 with 338 homeless individuals and 94 families sheltered or served by 33 of 40 shelter programs in the City of Boston. The data presented in this report were collected at one point in time. Point in time data results in an overrepresentation of the "longer term" homeless, and offers limited insight regarding the structural dynamics underlying movement from homelessness to residential stability (Culhane, Lee, Wachter, 1996; White, 1996). However, it does provide a snapshot of the men, women, and children who were spending the night in a …

Detection Of Functional Nicotinic Receptors Blocked By Α-Bungarotoxin On Pc12 Cells And Dependence Of Their Expression On Post-Translational Events, Edward M. Blumenthal, William G. Conroy, Suzanne J. Romano, Paul D. Kassner, Darwin K. Berg Aug 1997

Detection Of Functional Nicotinic Receptors Blocked By Α-Bungarotoxin On Pc12 Cells And Dependence Of Their Expression On Post-Translational Events, Edward M. Blumenthal, William G. Conroy, Suzanne J. Romano, Paul D. Kassner, Darwin K. Berg

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

A major class of nicotinic receptors in the nervous system is one that binds α-bungarotoxin and contains the α7 gene product. PC12 cells, frequently used to study nicotinic receptors, express the α7 gene and have binding sites for the toxin, but previous attempts to elicit currents from the putative receptors have failed. Using whole-cell patch-clamp recording techniques and rapid application of agonist, we find a rapidly desensitizing acetylcholine-induced current in the cells that can be blocked by α-bungarotoxin. The current amplitude varies dramatically among three populations of PC12 cells but correlates well with the number of toxin-binding receptors. In contrast, …

Aerial Photography Techniques To Estimate Populations Of Laughing Gull Nests In Jamaica Bay, New York, 1992-1995, Richard A. Dolbeer, Jerrold L. Belant, Glen E. Bernhardt

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We evaluated aerial photography (full coverage, using fixed-wing aircraft) and aerial video (transects, using helicopter) surveys to estimate the population of Laughing Gull (Larus ahicilla) nests in Jamaica Bay, New York, during June 1992-1995. We counted 4,920 nests in the colony using aerial photography and estimated 5,367 nests using aerial video in 1992. In 1993-1995, we respectively counted 5,691,5,095, and 6,126 nests in the colony using aerial photography, and estimated from ground plots that our counts differed from the actual number of nests by means of -9% to 1%. Overall (1993-1995) correction factors (by which to multiply the aerial photography …

Ianr Program Support: Results From The Nebraska Rural Poll, John C. Allen, Amy M. Smith, Sam Cordes, Amber Hamilton, Matt Spilker

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

This working paper presents findings from the first annual Nebraska Rural Poll. The study is based on 1,971 responses from households in the 87 nonmetropolitan counties in the state. The objectives of this paper are to provide information on how rural Nebraskans perceive the importance of various programs funded by the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR). The survey questions about IANR programs were included as a separate one page insert that was included in the large Rural Poll survey booklet. Because the IANR questions were marked “optional,” one must be cautious in drawing definitive conclusions from the responses. …
