Seastar™ (Orbview-2) Flight Operations And Data Delivery, Patricia Leygraaf Sep 1997

Seastar™ (Orbview-2) Flight Operations And Data Delivery, Patricia Leygraaf

Small Satellite Conference

SeaStar is the result of a ground-breaking arrangement between Orbital Sciences Corporation and NASA, in which the U.S. Government is procuring space-based environmental remote sensing data for research purposes from a commercial operator. The SeaStar system incorporates the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS), a visible to near-infrared, multi-spectral scanning radiometer developed by the Hughes Santa Barbara Research Center (SBRC). The ocean color data provided by this mission supports more efficient and profitable environmental monitoring and marine industries. The data purchase arrangement with NASA results in a unique mission operations scenario. Orbital is responsible for conducting full mission operations and maintaining …

Small Satellite Conference

The 113-kg Array of Low Energy X-ray Imaging Sensors (ALEXIS) satellite was launched from the fourth flight of Pegasus on 25 April, 1993 into a 750 x 850 km, 70 degree inclination orbit. Due to damage sustained at the time of launch, ground controllers did not make contact with the satellite until late June of 1993. By late July, full satellite operations had been restored through the implementation of new procedures for attitude control. Science operations with the two onboard experiments began at that time. Now 4 years later ALEXIS is still collecting more than 100 MB of mission data …

Intelligent Systems Applied To The Aerospace Industry, Charisse Sary, Roger Werking Sep 1997

Intelligent Systems Applied To The Aerospace Industry, Charisse Sary, Roger Werking

Small Satellite Conference

For years, the aerospace industry has relied on people and their knowledge to make critical decisions. This method of decision-making has become very expensive and unreliable, particularly when used to monitor increasingly complex systems. Intelligent systems and tools are now available that can be used to reduce costs and improve operations. Much work has been done in the area of intelligent systems to support aerospace-related activities. Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) has conducted studies and developed prototypes using three forms of intelligent systems: case-based reasoning, rule-based reasoning, and model-based reasoning. This paper will present an overview of these technologies and related …

Spacecraft Energy Storage Systems, Wilf Robinson, James Hanks, Len Spina, Doug Havenhill, Gary Gisler, Steve Ginter, Sharon Brault Sep 1997

Spacecraft Energy Storage Systems, Wilf Robinson, James Hanks, Len Spina, Doug Havenhill, Gary Gisler, Steve Ginter, Sharon Brault

Small Satellite Conference

Flywheel Energy Storage Systems represent an exciting alternative to traditional battery storage systems used to power satellites during periods of eclipse. The increasing demand for reliable communication and data access is driving explosive growth in the number of satellite systems being developed as well as their performance requirements. Power on orbit is the key to this performance, and batteries are becoming increasingly unattractive as an energy storage media. Flywheel systems offer very attractive characteristics for both energy storage in terms of energy density and the number of charge/discharge cycles, together with the important side benefit of spacecraft attitude control.

A Fault Tolerant Integrated Electronics Module For Small Satellites, M.E. Fraeman Sep 1997

A Fault Tolerant Integrated Electronics Module For Small Satellites, M.E. Fraeman

Small Satellite Conference

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) Space Department has developed the JHU/APL Integrated Electronics Module (APL IEM) architecture for future satellites to minimize development costs while maximizing mission flexibility. The architecture supports both low earth orbit and deep space missions. Redundant and single string configurations are possible. Core spacecraft functions including communications, guidance, navigation, attitude, power control, health and safety, command, and data handling are implemented in the APL IEM. Extensive use is made of industry standards. Adhering to these standards at subsystem boundaries allows us to incrementally improve these designs without impacting the remainder of the system. …

Development Of Flexible Thin-Film Photovoltaic Arrays For Nanosat Applications, Darby Cooper, Howard Shanks, Robert Weber Sep 1997

Development Of Flexible Thin-Film Photovoltaic Arrays For Nanosat Applications, Darby Cooper, Howard Shanks, Robert Weber

Small Satellite Conference

Space Industries has supported on-going internal development of a ''Nanosat'' spacecraft for a variety of missions. An essential part of any small spacecraft effort is an efficient power system. Amorphous thin-film silicon photovoltaic provide a mass efficiency greater than other photovoltaic systems. In cooperation with the Microelectronics Research Center at Iowa State University, Space Industries has undertaken a development effort to assess the potential of utilizing amorphous thinfilm silicon photovoltaics on small spacecraft. An overview of the development of a prototype unit will be presented along with results from ground testing. Projections for utilization of this technology in a flight …
